Loved the beach and the people who work there. I suggest you look for Roberto (Robbie) or Zion in particular for lessons if you need/want them. I met Zion in the water while he was giving instructions. He was really amazing working with a young girl pushing her to test her limits and encouraging her in very positive ways. I am not sure who he works for. Robbie is from Cabarete surf camp and he was the nicest guy to deal with. He is there until about noon every day when he moves over to teach kite surfing at another beach. He gave us the run down in the breaks making the experience of Encuentro one of the best. The vibes in the beach and in the water were all positive.

Flat rocks bottom, some sea urchins, be careful! I would recommend this beach for beginners, there are some surfing schools, but not only for them, as the waves may get gnarly and you will most probably have lots of fun!! Prefer early hours with full tide and avoid the flat times of the year with zero waves…

Best beach in the Puerto Plata area! Known primarily as a surfer beach, but the vibe here is cool for anyone who loves nature and a laid back place to enjoy the ocean. There is a shady area under a canopy of trees right up to the beach that allows you to get out of the sun when you need to, and within that are all the surf schools, the shops, and the cafes. The beach itself is beautiful although not really safe for swimming due to the strong currents that go hand in hand with the waves -- you can walk into the water a good ways but don't think you are going to practice your strokes here as you will get carried far off course. Get directions here from any local -- you just need to go down an unmarked dirt road across from Encuentro Surf Lodge and you will find a parking area steps from the action.

What makes Encuentro Beach so perfect is the long shelf out to sea, the trade winds blow off the Atlantic and the waves are super reliable, but being able to walk out so far and having the waves break over a long distance makes this the perfect beginners place to start surfing.

This is a great beach because it feels remote. It is often too rough for swimming but loved by the sports lovers. Kind of fun to just sit and watch. If you like walking, a great walk to or from Cabarete. A few portages but mostly remote beach walking

It's a reef break so if you're a beginner/intermediate surfer like me, wear booties to protect your feet. The beach is lovely and clean with soft sand. The shoreline is dotted with several surf schools.

There are several surf shops to rent equipment. The beach is quieter because the waves aren't for children to play in. Bring your own chair or blanket to sit on. Beautiful watching the surfers.

This is a must see even if you do not plan on surfing. There is a nice trail that leads to Encuentro from Kite Beach where you can see countryside, mountains and big reefs.
Surfers are out usually 7am-1pm . Depending on the month and weather/wind, the beach can be pretty empty too.

reef bottom , surfers paradise, not good for swimming in reality. a real good wave at coco pipe. powerful on good days but the tradewinds come by noon to chop it up. i loved it for bodyboarding the afternoon and riding the waves all morning. 4 surf camps or 3, i forget. bobos was the 1rst one closestto the hotel but the all are all close. its a good stretch of beach and good breaks all over. cool people and warm waves.

Where should I fly into and where should I stay to visit Encuentro beach? Don't need fancy lodging...just want to experience DR culture and do lots of surfing. (Beginner)

Puerto Plata is a lot closer airport if you have access to it...
We saw a nice, laid off place (took a yoga class there) right at the entry of Encuentro Beach called the El Encuentro Surf lodge... Looks very nice... Other than that plenty of choice and range in Cabarete and Sosua

Can we walk on the beach from Encuentro to Cabarete ? We want to go to Rogue's gym ... google says it's 55 min walk, I'm good with the walk, but was wondering if I can do it all the way on the beach?

What is the surfing like late August? From what I have read, the surfing season is mid-December until April.
Thanks.
