Our liveaboard experience aboard the Smiling Seahorse was so much fun I'm still smiling a month later! These guys do it right! We had a comfy cabin with private bathroom. Our cabin was on the dive deck so we didn't have to climb stairs to and from. The food was good and plentiful. The crew were always there to lend a helping hand whatever the situation. Our guide, Alex, was top notch. But all these good words are nothing unless the diving is great, and boy was it ever! We had friends that had done a trip with SS just a month before and raved about it, so our expectation level was very high, SS blew those expectations to smithereens. The diving was phenomenal! We are very experienced divers, and have dove some of the worlds top dive locations. Palau, the Philippines, Indonesia, Belize, and Cozumel to name a few and Thailand is right up there in the top tier. I have to mention the owners, Franck and Camille. They know how to keep the fun factor at a high level while running a smooth operation. I know there is a lot of hard work that goes into these liveaboard dive trips, it doesn't happen accidently. My hat is off to all involved. The trip was well conceived and executed flawlessly.

My first liveaboard, highly highly recommended! Everything from the diving, boat, staff, food was absolutely spot on. As a few others have mentioned, really well organised with small groups, rotating in order each day and great briefings before each dive. The quality of divemasters was brilliant & they're all super passionate about what they do. Some of the dive sites & diving in the Andaman sea were great, lots to see & included a lot of variety - wrecks, night, blackwater, caves and some fantastic reefs. Definitely planning to go back ;)

We went on a 6 night, 5 day scuba liveaboard trip focusing on Richelieu Rock & it was simply fabulous. Loved the boat, the owner Frank, the simple rules, small dive groups (no more than 4 divers to a guide), and our wonderful guide, James. James was wonderful & saved us on the black water dive. Will upgrade our ancient computers to more modern back-lit ones for next time, lol! We rented the rest of our gear & it was quality stuff. Food was good & staff always helpful. It was a great trip & nice ambiance onboard!

I just got certified a week ago and this boat was recommended by my instructor. I was the only new diver on the boat, but the guide gave me extra attention to make sure I was safe and comfortable, and she went above and beyond to help me improve my skills and to show me cool fish. Everyone was extremely supportive. The crew is incredible, anticipating your every need. The rooms were comfy. The food was plentiful. I hope to return and dive with them again one day!

As I'm writing this, I've done four trips on The Smiling Seahorse, and am about to head out for a fifth - that's as big a vote of confidence as I can possibly give. The boat is large and spacious, catering to only 16 divers per trip. Diving organization is excellent - each dive is preceded by a briefing, and the divers are split into four groups, which go through the dive deck in turns to avoid overcrowding it. The order of groups is rotated every day. Group size is limited to four divers per guide. Diving is conducted either off a dive platform on the back of the boat, or from a rigid-hull inflatable dinghy, depending on local conditions. The platform features two fin-friendly ladders, so it is possible to climb out of the water without shedding any equipment. Food is a mix of Thai and Western cuisine, served three times a day buffet-style, with additional snacks served in the afternoon, and regular snacks available around the clock. Snacks and soft drinks are included in the trip price, beer and wine are available at an additional cost. Once every trip, there is a barbecue night. I have not partaken in the use of rental SCUBA equipment, having brought my own set, but from what I have observed, it all seems to be in excellent shape. The use of dive computers by all divers is mandatory; if you do not own a personal dive computer, Suunto Zoops are available for rental. Likewise, the carrying of inflatable surface marker buoys is mandated for all divers; rentals are available at no additional charge and deployment is practiced at the first dive of a trip. One of the stand-out features of this boat is a dedicated camera room, with a large freshwater rinse tank, work benches for the camera rigs, shelves for accessories, and a plethora of power outlets for various chargers. There is also a compressed air hose for drying wet surfaces. Another feature which is, to the best of my knowledge, unique in Thailand, is regular blackwater diving. Blackwater dives are conducted at night, in deep open water, away from any reefs, with a drifting line holding a number of torches for visual reference, and offer a chance to see various marine creatures that are impossible to encounter otherwise, as during daylight hours, they either hide at depths inaccessible to divers, or are impossible to see in bright sunlight due to being largely transparent. The photographs one can create on those dives can be absolutely stunning, but I'm aware of only two other operators in Thailand conducting these dives on a very occasional, infrequent basis - The Smiling Seahorse tries to fit at least one of them into every trip, weather conditions permitting, and more if there is sufficient opportunity and customer interest. These dives carry a 500 baht surcharge, but honestly, those are the best 500 baht I've ever spent.
