Daepo port is a must visit when you happen to go to Sokcho city. There are tons of restaurants around the port which offers a wide range of seafood from fried shrimps, grilled fish, dried fish, sashimi, and fresh Korean style seafood soups. The prices of foods are a bit pricey because this is quite a well-known tourist destination in Sokcho but in terms of the quality and taste, I think it is worth to try. I am not a seafood lover personally, but Daepo port has something that my tastebuds will remember forever. The dried fish stored in resealable plastic bags are I think good gift items for your family and friends back home.

I didn't eat at the port but if you are after seafood then this is the place!
None of he restaurants are flash but a good authentic experience to be had, for sure.

I happily spent an hour walking around the port with my small kids and got lots of really great photo opportunities.

I personally wouldn't have gone out of my way to come to this port, it's just that my hotel was walking distance and it was something to do.

After visiting a nearby temple we were looking for a place to eat. We noticed a lot of lights coming from this area so we decided to stop. Little did we realize how popular Daepo Port is for fresh seafood. There are hundreds of little seafood restaurants where you can get fresh sashimi prepared right there. We stopped at a restaurant after an employee spoke a bit of English to us. We then knew that we could somewhat communicate. We opted for a set menu which included raw Flatfish, Minnow, Squid, and Sea Squirt (Meongge) along with steamed Crab, Clams, Prawns, and Fish Head soup. The only way we knew what we were eating was thanks to Google Translate. The staff was friendly and typed in the food names into the translate app. It was plenty of food for our family of 4 and cost 60,000 won. Most of the items were prepared raw and were delicious. The only exception was the Sea Squirt, I do not recommend it. Fun place to visit for some really fresh seafood. Lots of locals were eating at the restaurants! Apparently it's a must visit for local tourists. We were happy to have stumbled across it.

You just can not feel that you have a lack of choice. Go fishing, catch a fish and it is sashimi at your table within 10 minutes. I feel that the close in fishing is a bit fished out so tell the captain to go farther out. All the food is fantastic.

A little cheesy but kinda still fun port time with lots of night time activities such as fireworks (3,000 won) and horse-ridden rides, personally love Gwang-eo hui (abt 15,000) per fish and crab (1kg = 50,000), parking is hard and smokers everywhere. If you can deal with local Korean people, this place is still fun to visit. Stay until sun goes down and lights are up.

Daepo port is a nice place to stroll, particularly in the evening. They are in the middle of constructing a big hotel on the waterfront and in the process of beautifying this area. There are many stores that sell dried fish and there is one store that seems to be like a cooperative of the many small businesses where they sell local food goods. The way we happened upon dinner was buying some dried fish products and the lady that owned the store referred us to a restaurant. The fish was good, but to be honest, the best fish I had in Korea was in Busan port and Noryangjin in Seoul. The time we went was low season, so don't know if that was part of the reason. It was nice that there was a Paris Baguette right around the corner.

My family and I spent about 2 relaxing hours on a late afternoon including sunset at this lovely historical Daepo port (Daepohang) in Sokcho.

Getting there:
After our exhaustive adventure at Seoraksan National Park, my family and I alighted from bus number 7 at the Daepohang or Daepo Port (대포항) bus stop (other local buses include 1, 1-1, 7-1, 9, 9-1 and 94).

The attraction:
Daepo Port is located on the southern part of the port city of Sockcho (where there are no less than 5 ports in this city). Established in 1902, it has more than 120 years of history and certain sources pointed out that old Korea Peninsula maps showed only Daepo port and not even Sokcho. Daepo Port underwent an economic revival in the 1980s and today it is a popular tourist attraction in Sokcho.

I find it interesting that the configuration of inner Daepo Port is that of a three-quarter arc as in the alphabet “C” and together with the outer Daepo Breakwater structures (leading to the red and white lighthouses), the aerial view of the outline of the entire Daepo Port resembles a rectangular body with a round head at the top corner and an opening (to East Sea or Sea of Japan) at the opposite bottom left corner of the rectangular body.

Lining as well as behind the three-quarter arc are numerous restaurants serving delicious raw and cooked fresh seafood from East Sea (crabs, shrimps, clams, fish, scallops, sea cucumber, sea squirt, abalone, flounder etc) at reasonable price. Raw fish, grilled clams, fried crispy squids and fried shrimps are popular dishes you would want to savour.

Both ends of Daepo Port’s inner “C” opening are linked by a curved pedestrian only overpass bridge. We walked the bridge and enjoyed the lovely view of the boats and seafood restaurants on one side and the tall Ramada by Wyndham Hotel, red lighthouse, white lighthouse and East Sea on the other side of the bridge.

Upon coming down from the bridge, we walked towards the Ramada by Wyndham Hotel and then turned right at the hotel into the 400 meters promenade of the Daepo Breakwater structure. Along the promenade, we saw several local fishermen waiting patiently for their catch. At the end of the promenade is the prominent red lighthouse. It is this red lighthouse where the romantic dating scene in the K-drama “The Strong Girl Do Bong Soon” was shot. Unfortunately, it was closed so we could not go up to see the ocean view. Nevertheless, we chilled out at the benches to soak in the view of the contrasting white lighthouse on the opposite Breakwater structure and of course the red lighthouse which glowed its magnificent redness even more during the sunset (went below the nearby hill at 4:30pm). And when the cool evening breeze came along with sunset, it was a truly unforgettable experience!

So I recommend a visit to Daepo Port in Sokcho in the late afternoon followed by a sumptuous dinner and then a walk along the promenade to enjoy the wonderful night scenery especially of the bridge lit with colorful lighting.
