Putting side all the interesting story behind it, this place still offers tourists one of the best spots to view the majestic Mayon Volcano. Compared to many years ago, this place is much more touristy now, with lots of souvenir shops, eateries, etc. Parking and entrance to the ruins are no longer free. At any rate, the best time to visit this spot and to have a nice and complete view of the volcano is early in the morning before 9:00 AM. Coming early also prevents exposing one's self to the scorching heat of the sun.

A visit to Albay is not complete without dropping by the iconic Cagsawa Ruins with the majestic Mayon Volcano in the horizon. The park charges an entrance fee of P35 per person, and visitors will be greeted by stalls selling souvenir items as well as official photographers hired by the local government. This place was where we also tasted sili ice cream for the first time. At P50 per cup, it is guaranteed to put your mouth on fire. If visiting the park during the summer months, bringing bottled water and an umbrella is highly recommended.

This Franciscan, Baroque style church was built in 1587 but destroyed by Dutch pirates in 1636. Rebuilt in 1724 and destroyed again in including the town of Cagsaua during the Mayon volcano in 1814. On a clear day you will see the majestic Mt. Mayon volcano from here. The ruins are quite confusing as you would find it a challenge in orienting where the entrance and altar use to be. Lots of foliage on the ruins during my visit. Hopefully it gets cleared to protect the ruins. The soil feels like compact beach sand but is actually ashfall. Climbing the bellfry is not allowed, but access to the church ruins is.

This place gets busy leading up to mid morning so it is advise to go early. From the main road, it is walkable, trikes are available to and fro this area, nonetheless, those with vehicles are guaranteed a parking space in the area. This is a sight to see once in your life. #RP

I have visited the Cagsawa Ruins before but I didn’t try the ATV rides. During March 2020 the niece of my wife who came from Manila to attend the 18th birthday debut of our daughter , requested to go to Cagsawa ruins and to ride the ATV to go to the black lava close to the mayon volcano. After few minutes practice riding the ATV, me, my wife and the two nieces drove the ATVs and we were accompanied with a tour guide and another to take photos and vedios. Through rough roads and water puddles full of rocks we managed to rich a closure spot and we were taken by single motors to the the black lava where we had to climb through the black lava rocks to reach the top of the black lava where there was a helicopter ramp on the top very close to the mayon. While it was not easy for me to climb through the rough black lava rocks without the help of the tour guide who was holding my hand to help me climb, it was very exciting indeed. We really enjoyed the lovely seen and the beautiful weather on top where we took so many interesting pictures after which we went down through the black lava rocks and were taken again by the single motors to the previous spot where we rides the ATVs to go back through the same rough roads and water puddles. A very exciting adventure and a new interesting experience for me and my wife and the two nieces and we decided to come back again in bigger family group in near future.

Spoiler alert: I had always thought that one needed to trek a good distance from the town proper to get to this historic site. When my colleague from Legazpi told me that we could drop by Cagsawa ruins on the way back from a client, I was concerned that I was in office clothes. I was curious when he turned into a gated compound and parked in the lot. As I turned the corner, I was shocked to see the bell tower just in front of me with Mayon in the background, albeit barely visible through the haze, As it was drizzling that day.

Got some photo ops before the rain started to fall. A must if you come to Albay to see Mayon.

With the Mayon Volcano backdrop, it's a breathtaking site. Entrance fee is cheap. Be wary for those who have difficulty walking, plenty of walking on uneven ground & steps. It's a brief stop unless you decide to try the ATV. Definitely is a must see when in Legazpi.

How to get there: Take a jeep bound for Guinobatan or Camalig. Tell the driver to drop you off at Cagsawa Ruins. Once you are dropped off, you will have to take a tricycle (P7 each) to the site itself. The entrance is something like P10 each.

It is best to go there either early morning or late afternoon because at other times, the sun may be too harsh (bad photos) or the volcano will be heavily covered with clouds. Ask one of the people there to do "trick shots" for you. We tipped the kid who did this for us P100 for 15 shots.

It was rainy day but still my friend and I went to visit and see the Cagsawa Ruins. The entrance fee is only Php10. Mt Mayon was shy that day and hid herself from the white clouds. It could have been exciting if she was out. The park was indeed clean and there were souvenir boutiques around that sell very cheap items made of abaca. When the sun went out to shine, we started to take photos but we were not experts. We requested one guy who works there as photographer to earn a living for his family. That was touching to us, and he took wonderful shots! His name is Jay. We gave him cash gift for his effort and bought some of the photos he sells. We were perspiring because Jay would make us do things like jumping, etc just to catch some very nice tricks. We had fun!
