During my 3rd trip to Legazpi, I first glimpsed Mayon breaking through the clouds in the early morning as our approached to land, with a long wisp of white smoke like the vapor trail of a jet. Once we landed, the word majestic comes to mind seeing it looming so big right in front of you, looking so near. Locals would take you for a good person if you saw Mayon, though I'd take that lightheartedly; on my previous visit 2 years ago, haze and clouds kept it from view.
But this is always the highlight, if not the main purpose, of any visit to Albay.

Strongly recommend for everyone to visit the Mayon Volcano when you get the chance. We were lucky to see her full beauty. One ticked off my bucket list.
The locals are friendly, food are yummy, and
cheap accommodations as well with ac and hot water.
Would definitely come back!!

Perfectly symmetrical and one of the most active one. Very stunning, it’s really breathtaking to see it in person. You can feel it’s dominance as it towers over you.

We decided to hike the Mayon, beautiful conic volcano of Bicol. It is breath taking icon. If you decide to do the same - consider this:
1.) it is not allowed to go to the top - not with guide or yourself.(after terrible eruption in 2012 when tourists died)
2.)you will be allowed to go up to CAMP 2 - about 1200 m above sea level and walk through lava fields (stone river).
3.) it is not possible to find way yourself as it is quite tricky and you can get easily lost. Other volcanoes like Mt. Rinjani . Mt. Semeru have easy and only one path. Here it is not so easy.
So you need to get a guide and you have to.
We had George who is a great guide and speaks perfect English, nice and very helpful. I recommend, phone on George:
+639154224508
4.)Trek to camp 2 is not difficult, takes about 3 hours and 2 hours back if you are fit and do not take long breaks. there is water source as well below camp 2.
5.) If you want to get close to Mayon - there is alos another fun option - go to Cagsawa ruins, about 3 km from Legazpi city and rent an 4 wheeler - ATV, for 3 hrs aprox. 2000 - 3000 Pesos and you can drive up to Mayon and have fun in the trails. It is really worth it, great fun.

Anyone passing through Legazpi on their way to see the whale sharks in Donsol shouldn't miss the opportunity to climb the perfect cone of the Mayon Volcano. The views are stunning, the landscape is breathtaking, and the placid atmosphere is a world away from the teeming streets of Albay's capital city.
Unfortunately, if you try to book this trip through a local tour agency it will cost you a fortune, and little of the money will go to the guide and porter. On the other hand, if you try to book a climb independently in Legazpi, you run the risk of hiring an unlicensed guide, which can be dangerous as the volcano is a punishing and unpredictable place.
But if you book a Mayon trip with Jameel Mata, you're sure to have a safe and entertaining experience.
I climbed halfway up the Mayon Volcano in March 2015 – you can reach the second base camp in a challenging day trip – and Jameel was the perfect hiking companion.
Jameel is in his early 30s, speaks excellent English, and is a charming guide who knows the volcano intimately and has lots of interesting stories to tell.
Jameel has been a hiker for years, and is turning his passion for the great outdoors into a career. He's fit and nimble as a mountain goat – I had trouble keeping up with him! – but he'll happily tailor his speed to match the fitness of any hiker, and is accustomed to guiding tours of all ages and abilities.
Jameel can also recommend good cooks and trustworthy porters for expeditions up the Mayon Volcano, and can accommodate day trippers and anyone who wants to spend a night on the mountain and edge closer to the active crater. And as he won't charge you extortionate agency rates, hiring Jameel is an excellent way to make sure your money supports people who are doing the hard work, and avoid lining the pockets of unscrupulous middlemen who are exploiting local guides.
Jameel's telephone number, when calling from within the Philippines, is 09157 627 169, and you can email him at Tourguide_jameel@yahoo.com. However, the quickest way to contact him is via Facebook – just search for Jameel Mata.

The Majestic Mayon Volcano is the greatest icon you can see in the Province of Albay and from the heart of Legazpi City. Any visitor will get amazed and captivated of the beauty and serene of this God-given nature. With its perfect cone, one could imagine how such nature in this world exist.
I definitely agree that one could not leave this place without taking an image of this wonderful creation. Visitors may visit the "Linon Hill" - it should be pronounced as "linion" ... to have a great glimpse of the volcano. This is the symbol of "daragang magayon" which means a beautiful lady.. where old folks say that it is where the word - Mayon was derived from its native dialect word "magayon". Indeed, it is not surprising that such name tells the truth.
Another place you could visit in Legazpi City is the "Embarcadero", it is located in the heart of Legazpi City along the pier area. From there, you could also see the beauty of Mayon Volcano. This also serve as a shopping area for visitors and for those who want to have with souvenir items. They have also a duty free shop inside the big mall. Just bring along with you your passport.
Finally, the only words i can say.... come and visit the majestic Mayon Volcano. It is more fun in the Philippines!

Mt. Mayon is a great place to go, however you need to be lucky for the weather. We were able to make pictures directly from the airplane. We spent 3 days in Legaspi - she was clear off clouds in the morning during 2 days and covered by raining clouds during the last.
We paid for the trip to summit with Bicol Adventures. The trip takes 24 hours all together if you are fit. Started after 30 minutes trip by their jeep - at 2pm walking up the jungle to the camp 2 (1200m) - reached the camp around 5.30pm. We had 1 guide and 2 porters, there were another guide and 2 porters from the same agency already with another 2 ppl. We shared the camp equipment and had dinner together (rice and 2-3 different meals provided). There's nothing in a camp, everything needs to be carried - you will be provided with a tent and basic sleeping bag. Take enough water (I had 4,5 liters for both days), otherwise you will have to take the rain water from the rocks (anyway they use this water for cooking). It got cold and windy in the evening - take a winterstop jacket, jumper and long trousers.
We started next day at 3.30 in the morning to be up soon to have great view, however there's a cost for that - you are tired, you should have your own strong headlight (we were fortunately provided with 2) and you don't see much. It started raining within an hour - as you are climbing up in the river bed there was soon water running down, so we had to wait for 30 mins for rain and water to stop. I don't know what happens, if it does not stop raining. You probably go out from the river bed.
We reached the summit (2450m) at 7.30, but expect maybe 1-2hrs longer climb if you're not top fit. Climb to knife's edge compared to the summit would be boring and we wouldn't be satisfied. We were provided with the gas masks and they are necessary at the summit - lot of suplhur smoke. The view is magnificent and definitely worth of all the effort. After almost an hour at the top it took another 6,5 hours to get down with a break in camp 2 for lunch and packing rest of the things. Climbing down is harder, but once you start trusting your shoes it's ok. We got down around 2.30 pm.
Be sure to have good hiking shoes with vibram, to cut your nails (mine will go off shortly) and have some tape for blisters. Your legs will be really tired after this trip. Ask in the Bicol office for the helmets, we did not get any (did not ask either). It's good to have something sweet for quick energy, functional clothes, sun block cream and a hat. If you have climbing gloves - bring them - your fingers will thank you for that as you spent like 50% of climbing up using your hands. You don't need a repelent. Have extra clothes for sleeping.

Ist es möglich, den Vulkan Mayon jetzt: d. h. Februar, März oder April 2019 zu besteigen?
Written January 24, 2019
Hmmm. I don't understand. But, if the question is...what's the best month to visit Mayon Volcano, or Legaspi - April is best!
Written March 8, 2019
Hi... Are the vans outside the airport reasonably. Priced?
Written January 5, 2019
There are vans and taxis. You may take the tricycle if you like.

I’m planning on visiting Mayon volcano in January 2019. Would the weather be clear to view the volcano?
What’s the safest and closest adventure to the volcano?
Maraming slamat po.
Written October 6, 2018
Hi there! You can stay in Ninongs hotel located in Legazpi City, ask for the volcano room side (very reasonable price)From the airport, there are vans available and we used the same van/ driver to guide us to various scenic spots in Albay. We were also able to experience ATV near the volcano( quite restricted last February because it was actively erupting). January could be nice since its a cooler month and as long as there is no typhoon.

Anyone here tried trekking up the mayon? How long does it take? Which company can you recommend? How far to donsol from legazpi? Thanks
Written October 3, 2018
Since the recent Mayon Volcano eruption, hike to the crater is prohibited. Even ATV Tours are permitted up to the Black Lava front only. Travel time from Legazpi City to Donsol in Sorsogon takes about one and a half to two hours by car.

You can only go up a certain level. In the Cagsawa Ruins, you can rent an ATV. Give it a day or half a day, defending on what you plan to do.

Hello!
Arriving to Legazpi airport on day 1 at 5:55 am and leaving on day 2 at 20:20 (about 2 full days).
We need suggestions:
-one or 2 ATV trips?
-which company of ATV?
-accommodation:
**where did you stay? Do they come to pick you up?
Any tip is more than welcome!
Gracias

For hotels with Mayon view, The Oriental Hotel is the best pick, located atop a hill. Down side: Buffet is OK. Local dishes are available ala carte.
Embarcadero Hotel has Mayon views too, cheaper rates, clean rooms. It is close to the city port and Legazpi Boulevard, a long coastal road where locals go for daily walk or jog. Mayon is also visible there. Think of seafront view.
Down side:no elevator at 3rd floor (but when we where there, it was functional), no slippers too, breakfast is ordinary.
For ATV tour, pick Your Brother and Tours (Mayon ATV Tours) in Pawa. One ATV tour is enough :)
Try this route:Embarcadero-Pawa-Lignon Hill-Daraga Church-Cagsawa Ruins and all the way to Camalig.
The eztanza road also has a view of Mayon and there's a mountain resort too.

Hey! I’m traveling to the legazpi on the 15th, and arriving at 6am (as long as no delays) will I have any issues getting from the airport to accommodation? Anyone recommend anywhere for me and my girlfriend? Will I be able to sort a tour out for that day? As I want to go do donsol the next day.
Thanks in advance!
Written January 2, 2018
You can book already online in advance and have the hotel shuttle service pick you up. Otherwise, there will always be taxi cabs waiting at the airport. Our family stayed at St. Ellis Hotel. Our driver then showed us available tours since his brother works in a tour company in the city.
Try the Bicolandia ATV experience! And also visit the Hoyop - Hoyopan Cave. For local dining experience, try the Colonial Grill for exotic ice cream flavors especially the sili flavored ice cream.
