A short drive from Chitral , the female and younger Markhors come down the mountain slopes to drink from the river. We were at the spot where the well known BBC Planet Earth clip of the snow leopard was shot.

It is at an hour drive from Chitral town, the summer palace of former rulers, now converted in to a national park named as Chitral Gol.
It is famous for Markhor (Wild goat), Snow Leopard and other wild animals in the dense pine forests of the national park.
It shouldn't be missed if you are visiting Chitral and if you want an overnight camping is highly recommended .

Some 90 minutes from main Chitral town in northern Pakistan, hidden above in the Hindukush mountains is this lush green slice of heaven. Fresh fragrant air, breath-taking views, serene surroundings in full natural beauty await you once you brave the narrow and dangerous road leading to it.
This wildlife sanctuary is open to the public and entrance is free. It is home to the famous Markhor goat, Siberian ibex, Tibetan wolf, Red fox and the Himalayan black bear among others. Eagles, cartridges and falcon can also be spotted. A dilapidated fort of the "Mehter" former ruler of Chitral State, who used it as a summer home can also be seen.

It is located at some 30 minutes drive from Chitral town towards Garam Chashma valley, the Markhor families descend to river Garam Chashma in the afternoon and one could photograph them, enjoy the wildlife from a few yards.

Excellent ! If you're the person looking for some time alone and yet not too far away and remote the best place for you. There is a PTDC motel and an old residence of the then 'mehtar' though it's in the worse condition it can ever be.

Even though we timed it to be able to see the majestic animal Markhor, we weren't successful in seeing them.

I do recommend the national park as it offers great views - Just take food with you as there isn't much up there.

Awesome park with great potential of development. It can be developed on the lines of table mountain of Cape Town south Africa.
