The Bumburet valley consists of four main villages, none of which are called Bumburet, this being the name of the valley, which is also the longest and most populous of the three Kalash valleys. In every village there is something to see. Highlights include the old Zoroastrian cemetery and the museum. There are several possibilities to stay overnight and it is conveniently located place outside the dates of the Kalash festivals.

Bamburate Valley is located at a convenient distance from Chitral and is frequented by both locals and foreigners. The local Kalash tribes are still sticking to their old ways and are pleased to show-case their living style. Their dresses are unique, and so is their overall way of life.
Bamburate has 4 villages just 1 or 2 km apart and has good hotels available for the tourists. In summer the valley is busy. Some part of the track from the main national highway, N45, to the Bamburate Valley is at places very narrow and crossing with on-coming traffick is difficult. Caution and a slow pace is needed for outsider drivers. A four-wheel drive is recommended although the locals would regularly travel using battered regular 2wd sedans and station wagons.
The vally itself is beautiful. The views are mesmerizing.
Once you are in the valley, exploring the area and the different villages on foot is very much recommended. Do try the different local foods and the way these are eaten and served.

It takes about 3 hrs to get to the village from Ayun fort Inn. In some places the road is a single track and jeeps have to give way by reversing. If we have heavy traffic as during a festival then it can take much longer.
In order to see the festival and dances it is better to stay overnight at Bumburat, but unfortunately the PTDC motel is closed. There are other hotels but maybe none suitable for families. We were unable to see the museum since it was Friday which is the weekly holiday.
Their custom is to bury the dead in wooden coffins in open air. We can visit the grave yard. There are shops that are selling Kalash traditional caps and clothes. There is an open compound where at night during the festival dances take place.
One can take pictures of the colorful dressed people

It is one of the 3 valleys of Kalash, the main or central valley but very touristy.
If you are a photographer and want to photograph the Kalash, better to avoid the festival days, because this valley is resorted by thousands of tourists from all over Pakistan.
There are 2 other valleys, better to go there, names as Rumbur and Birir, less touristy and with a difficult access, that's why they are normally ignored by the tourists.

Kalash, based on ancestor worship, the Kalash people worship pantheon gods and goddesses. they are protector of the valley and its wildlife and crops. The population is close to 3,000, continues to shrink, with increasing threat from traditionalists to abandon their beliefs and traditions, and forceful conversions They are considered unique among the peoples of Pakistan. They are also considered to be Pakistan's smallest ethnoreligious community, practicing a religion which some scholars characterize as a form of animism The Kalash have fascinated anthropologists due to their unique culture compared to the rest in that region Some of the Kalash people claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great's soldiers,
Kalasha People live in three isolated mountain valleys Bumburet ,Rumbur,Birir, Grave yards are interesting The tradition of making wooden statues of ancestors to honour the memory of the dead is still observed among some of the Kalash people of Chitral. These statues, locally called Gandao, can be seen standing over the graves in the three Kalash valleys of Birir, Rumbur and Bumburet ,Museum at Bumburet is not be missed

There is no proper road going from lower Chitral. One should have enough patience and a comfortable vehicle otherwise almost two hours journey will make tired.

The Kalash people in general is reluctant to be photographed. Please ask for permission prior pointing your camera, show your respect. Their beautiful traditional costumes are beautiful.
There are limited options of food varieties, and more expensive then in Chitral. In general, the residents here are friendly.

Hi there i Like to vist Chitral in late December or early January is it accessable in Jan via Road or via Flight.?
Written July 18, 2019
Hello in December there is a weeklong winter festival of Chitramas in all three valleys of Bumburate, Birir and Rumbur Yes its accessible via Flight
Written July 18, 2019
I would not suggest to drive your own car on this route because at some places road is not carpeted. It may get a bit messy if it rains or etc.
There runs private cars b/w Chirtal to Bumburet, you can go through them.
