Waking up at 5am and walking to the Monestary to experience the morning chanting will stay with me forever. It doesn't matter what religion you follow, I am not a Buddhist but this experience was special. Don't expect a museum because it's not, it's a real life living organism of a monestary and that's why I loved it!

The bus ride up to the monastery is an adventure, especially the final stretch when the bus grinds its way through the sandy and dusty dirt road. The monastery sits on top of a mountain and has a new guest house. Stunning views in all directions.
The rooms are clean and practically furnished, but reduced to essentials, and so is the bathroom. The only problem is that there is no heating, so you should be prepared for this if you visit in winter time. Take warm socks, too, as the floor in the dining room is extremely cold.
The most impressive thing is the religious ceremony with all those young novices and the drums and the singing and praying. To have dinner and breakfast together with the monks in the dining room is another experience not to be missed. The food is simple but healthy.
I can definitely recommend an overnight stay in this monastery as it helps to understand some aspects of the spiritual life in Nepal.

I wish I could walk from Dhulikhel to Namo Buddha but was not too sure whether my 10 year old boy could do it! We settled for a taxi instead by i regret not walking; anyway, planning to do the 3 hours walking bit this year! The minute I stepped out of our taxi I sensed a wonderful calmness at the premises of the Tibetan Buddhist Monastery (Thrangu Tashi Yangste)! It was a glorious December morning with absolutely clear azure sky with a bright sunshine smiling upon us! My second regret was not being able to stay a night or two at the Monastery; there are two types of rooms which can be rented! I came to know about it much later. We took a round of the Monastery & went inside the huge prayer hall where larger than life statues of the Buddha are kept...we were not allowed to take photos inside but what a magnificent sight it was! The dominant colours are gold, red & maroon - very fine artistic work on the walls, ceiling & practically wherever i looked. Later we took a short walk from the back of the Monastery to the Stupa downhill & again the very glimpse of the place just took my breath away. Thousands of fluttering prayer flags against a spotless blue sky; people from all over the world praying at the temple; very very quiet & peaceful with the snow capped mountains all around & the orange groves just below!
I have never felt so relaxed - this is one of those places where one dreams to live a simple, soulful life without all that city life rat race! I would go there again & again.

To say it very clear !
The location himself is simply beautiful.
I've been there now a few times.
Once it was possible to overnight in the monastery himself, with dining with all the monks.
An experience on your own.
But now-days the changed the manager of the monastery.
Since them, the affordable (for Nepal) rooms for overnighting has disappeared.
They charge now a MINIMUM of 2000 Nepal rupies.
When we just commented that this isn't very cheap anymore for this country, the monk kicked us formally out of the place !!!! We could'nt believe this behavior of a chief monk !!

I did the 12 mile r/t hike to the monastery from the Dwarika’s hotel but you can drive to it. I have seen several monasteries in Myanmar and Thailand but nothing like this. The temple is majestic- unfortunately one is not allowed to photograph the interior. Glad I made the trip.

I was so fortunate to be able to stay in the New Guesthouse for 3 nights! It is such an effort to get to the monastery and SO WORTH IT to stay if you can and they have space. PLUS, 3000nr per night includes all meals taken with the monks! I wandered around the spacious grounds and loved the little cafe by the parking area that is run by the monks. Good coffee (butter tea with breakfast is great, but I'm a coffee fan! The cafe sits on the side of the hill with amazing views.
FULL MOON is the absolute best time to be there! AND, oh MY, the view of the Himalayas at Sunrise at the Stupa is a sight not to be missed.

Namo Buddha is one of the best destinations for day tour hiking from Kathmandu. It lies about 40 KM East-southern from Kathmandu. You can visit beautiful huge monastery of Namo Buddha as well as Nepal Himalayas like Langtang range, Gaurishankar etc. I did this trip, first drive to Dhulikhel by private car then hike about 3 hours to Namo Buddha Monastery. Then evening drive back to Kathmandu. This one day tour hiking offer chance to see the living life of Nepal country people, beautiful hills across the valley. This is why, I do highly recommend this day tour hiking from Kathmandu.

We come here by chance because the guesthouse owner encourage me to not miss it! And he was right…
We left from Dhulikhel at 8.30 am by walk to go Namo Buddha and then to reach Panauti in the afternoon at about 4.30 pm . It was not a simple walk especially because it was very hot, but it could be done independently without guides since the local people were very friendly and showed us the right path.
The Monastery itself really worth a visit, but the best part of the tour was to walk in the Newari villages and see how people live there. It was a unique experience to get in touch with local people.

From my home, I took my mountain bike and had a ride to Old Bus Park, Kathmandu. I asked for he bus to Dhulikhel. Putting my mountain bike on top of the bus, I traveled by bus. It's a one hour bus drive. I got down at Banepa Junction, did the cycling uphill on Panauti Road. There were quite a few junction but could locate the right way with sign boards.
It took me one and a half hours to get to the Stupa.
What a charming Stupa and flags! Amazing view point too.
Once you continue beyond the Stupa, there is a cave structure; the place for the great story. At that point "Bodhistava" donated his own body to be fed on by a staved tigress and her cubs.
Such a legend made this place a tourist attraction too. So people who admire such heroic deeds should do donations here for the poor; for the animals.
Keeping the tourist restaurants with beer and alcohol, in such place is actually embarrassing.!
The authority of Nepal should take an action.

This is one of the best place to visit and explore the country side both with friends or family. There are so many things to see and Monastery is just great and superb Architect. If you are interested you can also do meditation and stay in a monastery paying some donation.
The views are great both the valley and the Himalaya. You can also make a hiking trip from here to Dhulikhel or even Balthali.
If you plan to stay here, there are some basic guesthouse to stay. If you want to go better one then have to trek a bit further to Namobuddha Resort.

One review said that visitors are scolded if they don’t eat all their food. Is this accurate? My daughter has an eating disorder and most likely will not eat everything. Scolding her would be very traumatic.

mi hanno detto che per dormire si può scegliere tra il nuovo blocco e qeullo vecchio (nel primo caso si ha il bagno privato ), ma a livello estetico o di posizione cosa cambia?

Hi there, here are the emails of the monk looking after the guest houses. There are 2 in Namobuddha - old and new they call them, both within the premises of the gompa.
New guest house: lamanyimadorje[at]gmail - Lama Nyima Dorje but Tashi, one of the monks is actually arranging things most of the times. - 30e per night, with individual bathroom. All of these rooms have 2 beds, so suitable for sharing, then 15e per person.
Old guest house: michaelgurung[at]gmail - 15e per night, with shared utilities
For both, 3 times meals a day with the monks is included.
Very very special place!
Tashi delek!
