This beach is one of the tourist icons in Banyuwangi. Road access to the location is still not good. But on the beach itself, we can enjoy a shady beach atmosphere. Entrance ticket is relatively cheap. On the beach, we can rent lounge chairs for 2 people for 20k per hour. There are also young coconut ice sellers, and several food vendors around.

Our family and I visited this beach back in December of 2022, but i just felt the urge to document and share my experience there now!

Unfortunately, we arrived at a time when the weather was quite bad. However, strong wind didn't prevent us from enjoying our time! The scenery was still beautiful, and the beach was quite clean, considering all the people and tourists there at the time. Mind you, we visited 7 months ago - not really sure of how the condition is now. The people working there were very friendly too!

There is public transport to Pulah Merah Beach. Just to correct a previous post.

Option 1: Coming from Bali you can catch a bus from Ubung Bus terminal in Denpasar. Ask in the Ubung terminal for the bus that either stops or passes through Jajag, East Java. It will take approximately 7 hours this includes the ferry crossing from Gilimanuk, Bali to Bunyuwangi, East Java. On arrival in the Jajag bus terminal, catch a bemo or bus to Pesanggaran, approximately 50 to 60 minutes. The bus will stop at the bus stop outside the hospital in Pesanggaran. Depending on what time you arrive in Pesanggaran you could catch the 13:00hr bus to Pulah Merah beach otherwise you will have to use a motorbike taxi, approximately 20 minutes.

Option 2: Coming from West Java ensure that you catch a bus to Jajag which could be via Jember. I cannot give any approximate bus fares at this moment.

Option 3: From Bunyuwangi as for option 1. Approximately 2 hours to Jajag.

as many people talking about it lately we decide to feed our curiosity and went to this place on nyepi holiday. It took about 1 hour 45 mins (about 75km) drive with our scooters from ketapang. I could say 75% of the road was ok and the last 15kms was not in good condition, holes everywhere, narrow street, but it just a typical indonesian country road in java.
Every effort reaching this place was well paid off at the moment we saw the beach. we were gasping and just amazed by the beauty of this place.. just like bali 10-15 years ago.

day beds and umbrellas are available for rent, cheap food, clean and very well looked after by the locals. we had a chance to talked with the chief of the local group that maintain this area, and also the lifeguards which were trained by the australian and bali lifeguard. All of them are volunteers, and don't have any payroll from the local government.

so when you visiting this place, don't complain to much. make a contribution to the locals by paying the entrance ticket which cost you nothing, rent their daybeds, buy their foods, because this is what keep this place safe and clean.

I would definitely come again to this place..!

It takes 3 hours driving from Banyuwangi to reach this awesome 'hidden' gem. Not until last year finally it was opened to the world through a surfing competition. When I arrived there last week, I was totally amazed by the magnificent view surrounding the beach! The waves were consistent and big enough to have an enjoyable surf, though it is a very forgiving beach break. You just need to arrive there to experience the mystical feeling of surfing next to this big "red island" rock in the middle of the wave. The downside of this place since it is quite secluded, you wont find many tourist facilities although several home stays with air conditioning are available in the area. However, I managed to find a shop which provided a surf lesson for 2 hours including the soft top long boards :)

I ended up in Pulau Merah, on my way from Bedul... and what a surprise that was. A vast white sanded beach stretching for miles, featuring the famous island in the middle of the Bay. Swimming there was great, even if one has to be concious of the current. Surfers claim some of the best waves are there; and are having an International competition there, shortly.
We had bought some fish from the Grajagan Fish Market; and the "All-Bamboo" restaurant on the beach grilled it for us, while sipping a cold beer. From there, we could appreciate the view through the Banian trees... and what a sight that is. I will certainly go back there with friends. It is to be noted that the whole hill nearby is said to contain gold; and the well guarded Mine, has been attracting Diggers from various countries. Few simple villas are available for short rental on the Beach, and. It is only 1 hour from Villa Lemahbang... approx. 48 Kms from Blimbing Sari Airport, and 2 hours from Banyuwangi. Definnitely a Must!

My wife and I visit Red Island annually, when visiting my wife's family that live locally. Over the years we have noticed the changes to the area. 2012 The local mine was managed by Australian Company, and they kept the area clean with rubbish bins, and roads smooth. July 2016 we visited again, and the Australian mining company no longer managing the mine, instead local Indonesian mining company, who have not cared about the area or roads. The other issue is that thousands of Indonesians from far away visit the area, and have destroyed the beach with rubbish, and far to many Warungs, (restuarants). Indonesians are charged a fee to visit the beach, and the money collected should be used to employ locals to keep the beach and roads and area maintained and clean. We are very very disappointed in the dramatic changes to such a wonderful area which the Country should promote as a tourist destination.

I heard this beach longtime ago but never visit. My friend came over from Surabaya and I want to show her and I was surprise how beautiful this beach. White sand for maybe 2KM long, clean and not many people. Seen many big rock and amazing sunset. We were bit too late so just spend few hours as it was getting dark. Road to get here was bit bumpy so your motorbike/car should be in good condition and no many street light too so be careful. Definitely will come back with longer time, swimming and enjoy the sun. Fantastic

Many people had praised Pulau Merah's "pristine waters" and beautiful beach. So we went. Surprisingly, there were many signs on the usually not so well indicated roads leading to this renowned place, and that was perhaps not a good sign at all... Arriving at the busy gate, we were asked to pay the entrance fee. Good: as it usually means that the place is well maintained and your money contributes to its cleaning and protection. After meandering through a mess of peddlers, food and beach stands, cars and motorbikes pell-mell, we eventually parked and walked to the beautiful though overcrowded beach. We were looking forward to diving into the blue-green waves crashing on the white sand, but just a look at the amount of trash piling up on the beach everywhere (between apparently oblivious Indonesian vacationers) and smearing the sea with plastic trash, bottles and any sort of garbage, was overwhelmingly disgusting: traumatized, we beat a retreat.
What was the money contribution for, then?

Been here today. I heard from my friends this is a place for international surfing.

But... The waves is not big, no surfers.

Place is dirty, too crowded. It was not good beach. Except, the lounge was so cheap for 10000 idr per 30 minutes.
