We traveled from Gilimanuk to Banyuwangi on the 26th June and returned on the 30th June.
We found it very easy to get tickets.
On the Gilimanuk side the streets are lined with ticket offices.
We did have to show our passports and it cost 20,000Rup or $2Aus.
Coming back the ticket offices are across the road from the port and only cost us 16,000Rup this time.
The trip takes around 1 hour.
30 minutes traveling and 30 minutes to berth.
The bad part was the filth.
The toilets are so dirty and the outside seating area was also filthy.
The toilets don't have paper or even a paper holder.
But this is still the cheapest and best way to get between Bali and East Java.

Before boarding I suggest everyone eat a reality sandwich. This is Asia, the third world, in a nation of 260 million+. This is the predominant mode of transport between the 146 million people of Java and the most touristed place in the country, Bali. It costs very little, even with a car. No it's not the cleanest boat in the world, yes there are many of them operating and there are some fumes. But we managed to have a great (short) crossing engaged all the while by a group of Javanese kids whose families were heading for a vacation in Bali. We got where we were going in a timely manner, none the worse for wear. If you want entertainment find something else, but of you want to cross between Java and Bali without flying you could do a lot worse.

We (group of 19 people) traveled from Bali to Java during a 3,5-day land tour (De-Djawatan - Ijen - Tumpask Sewu - Bromo).
It took longtime filling in passengers' info and waiting. Cheap price maybe (ticket already included in our tour), carrying vehicles, and their passengers.
However, me & my friends enjoyed the journey, having fast lunch with instant mie and instant white kopi, looking the mountains as background, and smeeling the cool breeze. The food seller was friendly, like every locals there.
I like Indonesian people, 'sans-souci' at least ones I met on the way from Bali to Surabaya.

this is the first time, I go to Bali with car. So, I must use ferry to across the strait.
First I buy ticket on minimarket across the Harbour.
Then, after paid (in cash, they don't accept card), we can go to the harbour. Just give tickets and another documents and just follow the instructions.
After 50 minutes, I've already arrived at Bali.

We do this trip once a month with our vehicle, we find it a good way for our guests from Bali to see other parts of Indonesia and it is just a short trip either one day or stay overnight, but a good continual service.

Nice and fast ferry ride. Cheap for a person without any vehicle. Easy for traveling from Bali to Java. Especially if you wanna do the Ijen tour!

We're taken our share of ferries in our time, and this one ranks near the bottom of our experiences. First off, because there are so many ships operating, they wait out in the harbor to dock, extending what should be a fairly short 30 minute journey. (We had good weather, so I think this only gets worse if the weather turns bad.) Everyone was smoking once on board, and it was just a miserable trip for the most part. Felt hassled by some of the other locals taking the boat. Getting off was a nightmare since we were probably the only walk on pedestrians. Everyone else was on a vehicle. And we stood there being gassed by their exhaust as the boat took a long time to dock and get situated. Wanted to try overland to Bali. Now that I have done it, won't want to try that again.
