when the say Kebun sayur / vegetables garden market, in my mind was kalimantan famous floating market :p so i say yes to my taxi drivers and we go to this place, its actually located in the center of the city and best for souvenirs from Dayak and gems stone. The price here is cheap and negotiable so bargain from the lowest price ever :) i buy some Dayak souvenirs the table cloth made from gems is around 300.000 rupiahs here, in the store in Balik Papan they asked for rp500.000 :p and on the Sepinggan airport around rp 600.000 to 750.000. so yes this is the best place for you to shop ! from t.shirts to stone :) and if you hungry , on the back of this market they have small restaurant and serve best grilled shrimps ever in Balik Papan ! just grab it and continue shopping here :)

Overall the market is quite hectic, with narrow street inside & sometimes dark due to limited lighting. Stores in the market sell varios kind of "Kalimantan's merchandise" especially gemstone. One merchandise store that I recommend is the "Upik" store, where they sell merchandise with quite a good quality & the price are clear, you do not need to hustle & feel tricked like in the other store. And the price are reasonable, again with quite a various range of merchandise to buy.
The store is located just in front of the market & easily to find. Bright store & good communication fron the seller, so you can choose the products comfortably.

Can you imagine all stalls in the market selling precious stones ? But surprisingly the price are considerably very cheap. Even you can see them carving the stones on site. If you are a precious stone lover, I think you must visit this market. I saw many tourists, not only local tourists, but also foreigners. At least if you have an opportunity to com to Balikpapan, do not miss this place.

This tradisional market is the best place in Balikpapan to buy souvenir. Don't forget to bargain the price with the seller, usually you can bargain start from 1/3 of the initial price the seller gives you.
You can find various dayak handicraft (bag, brecelet, wallet), gemstone (Quartz to Diamond), Sarung Samarinda, Sasirangan Batik, Dayak Fabric, Tshirt, etc.
If you get hungry, you can go to Haur Gading, a smalling restaurant at the backside of this market.

Whilst a bule will usually be exploited by the locals at a market like this... I found the prices to be good be fair (especially if you speak the language). The range is great and the food is fresh.

Wherever you visit a place, make sure to bring souvenir of the place. And this place is the center of souvenirs for Kalimantan/Borneo.
You can get almost everything here. From bracelet, necklace, key chain, clothes to some traditional medicine.
Though they're plenty of store, basically they're all the same (items and price). So, if you're good at negotiation, you might get a bargain.

The place' name does not define the activity there. There were no vegetable sellers therefore no buyer. So what actually the seller sell there? Gem stones. Yes many people come to vegetable garden market for dealing with various kinds of gem stones.
The market opens from 9 am till 4 pm, monday to sunday

I think this market is one of the best handmade and souvenir centre in Balikpapan. I bought a bag made from a rattan and it is so cute! They also have store that sells souvenir about Balikpapan, such as t shirt etc. But make sure you bought the best quality t shirt because most of them made from a kind of cotton which make you feel hot when wearing it.

I've already visited this place for a few times and it still is my favourite place for buying souvenirs in Balikpapan. For starters, if you want to visit this place in Balikpapan just say 'take me to Pasar Inpres Kebun Sayur' to your driver or friends.
Things that i usually bought here are
1. Sasirangan batik, its a type of batik from Kalimantan Selatan that was made with similar process of tie dye (pict 1)
2. Ampiek batik, its a different type of batik that is native to Kalimantan Timur (pict 2)
3. Bead handcraft, from necklaces to bags (pict 3).
4. etc
Tips:
When youre at Pasar Inpres Kebun Sayur dont be afraid to bargain, try at least til half of the price they first offered and be friendly. Its a local market anyway.

Worth the visit if you like gemstones. It is amazing to see the beautiful polished gems that stone is transformed into. Plan to spend some time finding a place that will give you good information about the stones and ask lots of questions. The local amethyst is very inexpensive and quite lovely.
