Great ATV Ride
Jun 2021 • Couples
The Gondola ride starts at 11am.
That too, only Phase1 operational, Phase 2 closed, which take you to the ice peak.
We had to start early, so we booked an ATV, skippping the Gondola Ride and it was totally worth it.
The ride is through the wood on the natural course.
The driver lets you drive alone for sometime too in between at safe places.
A bit expensive than Gondola, but totally worth it.

lucky if you go to phase 2, weather is always bad
Apr 2021
this is the topmost attraction of Gulmarg and this ride is the second-highest cable car in the world. When we traveled, Every year thousands of tourists rank it 1st on their to-do list and it makes sense. in India, no place can offer you a view like this and that too by Ropeway. Price - 740/PP to phase-1( April 2021). and yes Mask is mandatory now.

so how this works- Gondola Lift operates in 2 phases – Gulmarg > Kongdoor and Kongdoor > Apharwat. details are in one of the photos I uploaded. Phase 1 of the Gulmarg Gondola Project starts in Gulmarg at 2’990 m has a vertical rise of 400 meters traveling at 5 meters per second, ferries 1500 people per hour from Gulmarg to a height of 3100 meters above sea level to middle station Kongdoor Mountain, from which skiers have access to numerous easy runs through the trees and to the groomed but narrow slopes.

Phase 2 of the Gulmarg Gondola Project starts at Kongdoor and ascends a slope of 2688 meters at a vertical rise of 880 meters from Kongdoor traveling at 5 meters per second, ferries 600 people per hour to a height of 3980 meters onto Apharwat Mount.

While going to Gulmarg, just before entering the up climb, there is a base (Tungmarg) where one can hire snow jackets and boots of all sizes and colors. We paid 150/boot - this is mandatory.

We visited the place in the first week of April and all the mountain peaks were covered with snow, In case you visit during the hotter months like July August, then the meadow is covered with green, the valley turns colorful with flowers blossomed.

Enough about what you can find on google, personal experience (below)

See, from my experience, I can tell - you must be lucky in winter to go to Phase 2. half of the time, phase 2 is closed due to bad weather.
I had gone there with my family, booked a hotel, cab, and everything, Sledge worker even looted us ( story below), we almost spent INR 20K and we did not get a chance to go to Phase 2 due to bad weather. Sonmarg is beautiful and yes, I can't compare both, but Gulmarg ( after googling 'Gulmarg Phase 2 in clear weather, made me realized what I missed, but it's all about your luck and mother nature.

ok let me tell you another (Kinda Scam) thing that happens in Sonmarg-Gulmarg-Pahalgam and nearby tourist areas if you came here by cab thingking, we hired a cab and we can roam anywhere, NO, BIG NO. all you (rather your driver) can do is, come to parking and pay an exaggerated amount to reach other scenic spots by sled, taxi. Yes, hired cab from Srinagar is good for reaching the parking spot only. Their logic, is- what locals will do, this is their business and mind you, it all works on commission. Sled workers only get 30-40% of what you pay to the guy who comes to your car dealing with all the charge/fee.

so coming to the story - How Sledge worker scammed us: From local shopkeepers to Driver ( yes even my driver with whom we spent 3-4 days), nobody tells you how the scam works. it was all foggy winter scene and we parked our car and it was our responsibility to reach the Gondola ticket counter. Our driver did not take us directly over there, We were not able to see how we can go to the Gondola ticket counter from the parking spot due to rain and foggy weather. We asked 7-10 people and everybody was saying, sled worker will take you, after negotiating, we paid 3600 for 6 people to take us to the ticket counter. (In gondola cabin, we met a couple and they paid 6000 for 2 people, god these scammers)

after all the activity ( gondola ride), we came back and can see there is a perfect road to the parking spot, so why did nobody tell us about this. we were clearly scammed. 2 km, we could have walked there but locals gave us wrong info and the logic is- this is their roji-roti ( business). anyway, After coming back, we confronted our driver and he told us, " Janab , agar hum aapko bata dete to ye locals hume pit dete ( if I would have told you, they would beat me)

overall, not a great day for me, I have been there in summer and wanted to experience a winter ride that too on Phase 2 Apharwat peak...
might be later... cheers!!

Covid hotspot
May 2021 • Family
The Gulmarg gondola is the least organized place in the entire country.

Right from buying tickets to standing in queue to embark the gondolas - it's a nightmare. The place is still stuck in the 1980s when the touts were kings and vendors charging anything to fleece was the norm.

As expected, buying a ticket is impossible with the jostling and shouting of locals buying (hoarding) tickets. If you need a ticket you need a "guide" who will charge anything from 700-1200 to completely invade your privacy and drag and heckle you around till you take the services of his friends who offer overpriced activities.

Once the guide gets your tickets (we were a family of 5 - with my father and 2 kids) you proceed to a cramped and rediculus queue system where people are cutting the line, pushing and maintaining no social distance.

The queue management is very much possible as this is a government managed facility. But there is no will or aptitude from the tourism department's perspective to maintain a decorum and in the current times prevent spread of Covid19.

MY ENTIRE FAMILY GOT COVID POSITIVE AT THIS LOCATION. Senior citizen father, us 2 in our 40s and 2 kids.

Once entry to the gondola is attained, it's a 10 mins ride to the top. Which is the only peace and quiet you will get in this place.

We landed at the Phase 1 top as phase 2 was not open due to bad weather. The moment we stepped out again the constant barrage of peddlers and hawkers surrounded us. We took ski for our kids aged 11 and 13 at Rs. 2000 per child as there was no rate card or anyone willing to offer us any cheaper.

Ski scooter was 1500 per person.

The whole place was crowded and whilst it was snowing heavily, we could get a minute of alone time with my family without the "guide" prodding us to take up some service or go to a ramshackle huts to buy maggi or other food.

I ended up spending around 10K in rides for the family. Not that I have a problem spending money in a tourist place, but this rampant fleecing and almost taking the tourist as being a gullible idiot who can be charged anything was a major turnoff.

The return journey back to the base too was packed with crowd jostling and pushing and suffocating children who started crying.

Another tourist trap I forgot to mention is that the car park is about 2-3 Kms away and local taxi takes 500-900 to ferry you one way per vehicle. This makes no sense as the distance is not much but one has no option due to the exhausting journey down.

All is all, Kashmir is a beautiful place, but due to the people stuck in the 1980s attitude, it's ruining it for the tourist who wants to come and spend. With the same amount of money I spent, I could have easily gone to any hill station in India or even international destinations like Thailand, Malaysia etc.

J&K government is primarily at fault as the people are just dependant on one profession i.e. tourism and therefore the attitude has become to fleece the tourist to make a fast buck whilst it lasts.

This was my experience of paradise on earth.

An experience to remember
Apr 2021
This experience it truly international in every way. The gondolas (Cable car) are of very good quality and well maintained. The first stop is Khilanmarg, where most tourists end their journey. There is plenty to do here - sledge ride, skiing, jet ski. Hot snacks are available and this stop is a complete picnic. The next gondolal ride up takes you to Afarwat. The views get even better from here, since this is at 14,000 ft as compared to Khilanmarg which is at 10,000 ft. On clear days, this place offers some amazing views of the Nanga Parbat in Zanskar valley, as well as breathtaking views of Wular Lake.

Super amazing and full support for buying gondola tickets by Adventure Gulmarg on time.
Must go place and just 1 recommendation below the age of 5 years, it is difficult to manage the kids in winter specifically.

Heavenly experience
Apr 2021
Gondola is a must try for experience if visiting Gulmarg
It has 2 phases, as there is snow in phase 1 currently they have activities there onlySo better to avoid phase 2.
Activities include sledge , snow biking Ski
Please avoid taking sledge from top (phase1) to bottom ( start of Gondola) unless you want to test the stress on your body!
I would recommend to return by gondola only.
Please do bargain while taking activities
