I visited with a group. The museum included many samples of the different types of coal as well as many articles made from coal.
We donned hard hats with lamps and took a small train through tunnels. I was ready to get out of the tunnels after a few minutes. I can't imagine what it must be like to work in mines.
This is a very informative museum. There is a Coal Museum Hotel where we had a quite nice dinner.
For anyone having an extra hour or two in Taiyuan this museum is worth a visit.

The outside of the museum really looked run down and unappealing. We had to take a side elevator to get into the museum, perhaps the building was undergoing some renovation so you might want to enquire ahead before your visit. Anyway, once we got in, we were impressed with what we saw. The museum was nicely divided into several sections and Items were nicely displayed. We joined the tour in Mandarin and it was very well conducted. The 3D movie was the only let down, content was good but the 3D effect needed some fixing. After the museum tour, we were taken to another level to learn and experience the working environments of coal workers. That part was nicely done too. The visit took about 2 hours.
If you are not proficient in Mandarin, do enquire ahead as I am not too sure about foreign language support.

You can probably learn more about coal and the industry from Wikipedia than this place. As this museum was constructed almost 30 years ago, it is very dated and substandard. It should be revamped. The "4D" movie is quite lame. The underground mine is also a letdown. Having visited both themepark mines and real mines in South Africa, this place pales in comparison. The "train ride" is a waste of time. I would not go here even if I have the time.

The initial part of the guided tour has displays on voal formation, different types of cosl and where they come from in China. However the best part of the tour is going underground into an old mine complete with u nderground train which took us around a display on past mining practice. The tour finishes up with how current underground mines are established complte with machinery ans hydraulic pillars. There is also a didplay of artwork from Shanxi Province
Excellent for kids. There was also 3D m I vie with English subtitles
