My transportation experience in Nanning
Aug 2016
I took a bus from Yangshuo North Bus station to Nanning. It took almost 6 hours to reach Nanning. About half an hour before Nanning, the bus broke down and it took an additional 40 mins for the workshop to fix the problem. Looking at the dilapidated condition of the coach seats, the bus appeared quite old and may need an overhaul. This is the first time I took a coach in China which broke down along the way. I would suggest using the bullet train if you are traveling from Guilin to Nanning, it is faster, of shorter duration and I paid the same RMB130 (First class seat; RMB110 for Second Class seat) for the bullet train from Nanning to Guilin and for taking the bus from Yangshuo North to Nanning. The bullet train which I took from Nanning East Railway Station to Guilin took only 2.5 hrs. However, you need to purchase your bullet train tickets few days in advance. I should have bought my train tickets on the first day when I was in Nanning. By the third day when I was leaving for Guilin early in the morning, I could not get any ticket in the morning and the earliest train ticket I could get was in the afternoon and only First Class tickets were available. Half an hour later, all the afternoon tickets were also sold off. My advice is to buy bullet train tickets at least 2 days in advance not to wait until the last minute. I waited patiently at Nanning East Railway Station from 8 am to 2 pm just to take the bullet train to Guilin. Nevertheless, I must commend on Nanning East Railway Station. The toilets are kept clean and well-maintained. Drinking water are available from water dispensers and the food price at the restaurants catered to the masses and are relatively cheap. I am not familiar with Jiangnan Bus Service but I am familiar with Langdong Bus Station. The bus from Yangshuo North Bus Station ended at Langdong Bus Station. Only the coach from Yangshuo South Bus Station ended at Jiangnan Bus Station. I also bought my bus ticket to the world second largest trans border waterfall (Detian Waterfall) at Langdong Bus Station. The Detian Waterfall is located near to the China-Vietnam border. There is only one bus to the attraction and the departure time is at 8.30 am. I must give my salute to this bus company as the company takes particular attention on passengers safety. All passengers were advised to fasten their seat belt before leaving and the bus screened a safety warning film to alert us on the fatal consequence should an accident occur. The bus fare cost RMB75 for one way to the waterfall. The bullet train tickets cannot be purchased at Langdong Bus Station. You have to go to Nanning East Railway Station to buy the ticket. The newly constructed metro subway has just opened up the metro line in Aug 2016 when we were there and it cost only RMB 2 to travel from Langdong Bus Station to Nanning East Railway Station. I am impressed with the metro subway in Nanning. It was lustrously clean, modern and efficient. The authority in Nanning is very energy conscious. The air condition in Langdong Bus Station was never switched on and sitting at the crowded station in a air stuffy condition was quite intolerable. There is a KFC at the upper deck of the station and I found the air condition at the outlet was efficiently cold and conducive. The Langdong Bus Station should consider taking care of the welfare of the bus commuters. I have no issue with the city public buses. They are very modern and clean. The buses run late into mid night and the trips were quite regular. I was quite worried that I would not be able to fetch a public bus back to my hotel when I returned to Nanning from my day tour to Detian Waterfall at about 10.30 pm. I was wrong. The public buses were many and regular. I am impressed with the public bus transportation in Nanning. I found Nanning an interesting city. It was supposed to be China's gateway to Asean. I could see improvement made to the transportation system. In times to come, with the operations of the full fledged metro system, the transportation system is likely to be more convenient and efficient for the visitors.

Major bus terminal
Nov 2016 • Couples
It was very crowded at Jiangnan Bus Terminal on the Saturday morning. There were no x-ray machines unlike at An-ji Bus Terminal. Long lines at the 15 or so ticketing counters. Staff was impatient. They don't like to answer questions from customers.

No one need to queue at ticket counters for online booking.

Toilets were so deplorable.

Very Very Bad Bus Service from Haikou to Nanning and return
Mar 2015 • Couples
We have a very bad experience from Haikou to Nanning and Nanning to Haikou and I must share this. We booked the tickets from Haikou East Station. We asked if those were coach with seats and not bed we were told YES. I asked how many seats were in that coach, was answered 23. Our ticket show seat 5 and 6. We board a bus that bring us to Xiu Ying Gang. We waited then a guy came shouting and rounding us up and out of the station, after pushing our luggage in the street for 10 mins, we arrived in another station, the guy disappeared. We went to the gates to check if we are supposed to board, the lady says later, another lady in unofficial clothes called out our bus number and ask that we board the old looking coach with 42 beds.

We were in for shock. Shortly after the bus moved to the docks, he shouted at some of the passengers and asked them to disembark. We don't know what is happening. All we know is that the bus is overbooked. The assistant now came up the bus asking more people to go down. In fact all of the passengers were out. We saw some paying the assistant.

We waited for a long while at the dock with no guidance, later were asked to queue up to check tickets for ship and board the ship.

With experience from Haikou to Nanning, we thought we could check clearly and buy the right ticket this time. We checked with the information counter how many seaters does the coach have and she says 18. I was like?? I asked again at the ticketing counter stating I don't want the coach with bed. They says ok.

We board the bus at Jiangnan Bus Station, the coach looks decent with leg room. 10 mins down the road, we were chased down the coach asking to rush to another crampy coach (bus B3195)that have 40 seats or more. Again it was overbooked. Some short distant passengers has to go down the coach.

We travelled for at least 6 to 7 hours then we were chased down the coach again. It was drizzling and all the passengers going to Haikou have to board another coach (B73886). It was the crampy coach with bed. An hour or more ride we reach the dock, we were asked to disembark, we were given tickets for the boat. Boat 2. When we queue up for our boarding we were rejected because our bus number does not appear or tally with the boat queue. We waiting for more than an hour, the bus assistant came shouting at us, the boat is leaving and all of us were still waiting at the dock to board the ship. After all the rush, we board the ship. We waited again after the ship arrived in Haikou. No one came to us, we were stranded at the dock with our luggage on the coach. After close to an hour of waiting, the coach arrived with our luggage, and refused to bring us to the station, he left all of us at the dock at 2am where other passengers board the bus and left.

The responsible party for this transport services has to be responsible for all these actions. Changing 3 coaches for a point to point destination is terrible without clear instructions and dumping tourist at the docks at 2am is really irresponsible.
