Located 1/2 hour from city center, the Yao mountain chair lift ride up is scenic and panoramic. However, please choose a clear day otherwise you get a misty scape and the beautiful Guilin mountains are not visible.
A 20 minute ride up alights you at the summit , approximate 900 m high. There are the usual souvenir shops and a temple with a diety to ask for blessings. Several Buddha statues featuring the chinese zodiac is also available for you to buy a charm to hang at the base for luck.
During summer , there is a toboggan ride at the halfway mark.
On top, if the skies are clear, you can have a bird’s eye view of the city and the majestic circle of mountains. If the skies are cloudy, at least you can enjoy the crisp winter air and feel refreshed.

Took the gondola ride to the top of Yao Mountain and ride up was excellent and gave a terrific view of the Guilin Mountains. The view at the top of the mountain was sweepingly spectacular!!

We walked up Yao mountain (it's all paved) and caught the cable car down to the bottom. The views are spectacular when you get to the top. There are waterfalls, which I'm told and certain times of year are spectacular, though they looked pretty good to us. Also there are lots of places to stop on the way up, for a picnic or rest. Very civilised!

Our tour guide recommended Yao Mnt for it's views. We were surprised when we got to the parking lot to find you go up by what they call 'Cable Car'. In fact it is not a cable car at all - it's a chair lift! And is 20 minutes in either direction. Therefore, I was pleased to find it closed for maintenance the day we went! All was not lost though as you can easily just drive up the back of the mountain and as we had car and driver that's what we did. 15 minutes and very comfortable.

The views from the top might be great but we didn't see them as it was extremely hazy the day we went. There were however a few very bright pink peach blossoms that made a nice contrast with the haze. My AVG review is not for the hazy day of course but for the few buildings up here not in good condition, run down, dirty, poorly maintained and some new, not very nice building going on to.

ONLY go if you have tons of time and a very clear day. And skip the chair lift - expensive at 100 Yuen pp (~$20 CDN) - just drive up the back.

The view from Yao mountain is impressive. A ski type double chair lift is used to get to the top of the mountain, where you may enjoy a complete view of the city and surrounding mountains.
