When I started researching the logistics of organizing a trip to trek Mt Kilimanjoro, I was overwhelmed by the scope and number of different tour groups available online. And course, one must have a tour agency with guide and crew to summit Kilimanjoro. KPAP is a good website to narrow down the tour agencies who did Kili treks. Ultimately, I was looking on a handful of agencies and Oreta Aventures ltd offered the appropriate departure date, package and price point for my budget. They were prompt with their email replies, and were waiting for me at JRO airport even though my flight was delayed. They helped me a lot since my checked baggage got delayed by a couple day on arrival, they took care of it and had it delivered to my hotel. They partner with a very good local hotel, The Honey Badger Lodge, which although located outside the Moshi central, the place was quiet, tranquil, and offers great amenities pre and post trek.
Yes, on their website, Oreta has a USA number and directors working in the USA to cater to North American clients, but what I appreciated most of Oreta Adventures, is they are registered in Tanzania. They have physical office in Moshi, employ local staff including a great driver/guide in Gabriel. In the end, I really appreciate that small aspect.

They were accommodating, even though I ended trekking Kili alone with a crew, they organized an excellent guide (Heberon) and crew to accompany me. Overall excellent experience on the trek, before, during and after. The pricepoint for my trek is standard budget type [sleeping tents, simple Tanzanian and western meals, squat public toilets (although you can rent a private toilet on request), bringing my own gear]. The guide had a pulse oxymeter and oxygen tank for emergencies. My guide was the main reason I was able to summit. Even though I finished the Kili trek a day ahead of schedule (originally set for 7 nights, Lemosho), Oreta graciously gave me an extra day hotel accommodation to relax.
I recommend Oreta Adventures for trekking Kilimanjoro. On my departure date, there was another group going on Safari with Oreta, and I envy them.

A month ago I started my trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro. It was my first time on any mountain and my first time even camping for that matter. Now despite these two facts, I chose to do the Machame 6 day route. I figured if I am going to do this, I might as well go all in and really challenge myself. As a university student studying abroad in Tanzania, my main concerns were finding a company with an affordable climbing price as well as a good record with treating their employees well. I chose to climb with Oreta Adventures and I couldn’t speak more highly of this company! When I started my trek, I had no idea what lay ahead of me; how my body would react to high altitude, if I was even fit enough to summit in just over four days, etc. I was also unable to join a group/convince any of my friends to accompany me on this crazy climb so I hiked just me, my guide, our porters and cook. The crew was absolutely amazing! My guide was knowledgeable, incredibly patient and I am convinced that I wouldn’t have been able to summit without him. I really struggled with the altitude on summit day and my guide held my hand from base camp to Uhuru peak and back down the mountain. When I made it back from the summit, my porters raced to me with a hug and then insisted I sit while they take off my boots. My crew didn’t just care about their tips. They looked after me (hiking that mountain is not easy on your own!), kept my morale high and did everything in their power to help me summit. I was very appreciative that these men sincerely wanted me to succeed. I am studying abroad in Tanzania so I wasn’t able to bring any gear with me and was able to rent everything I needed through Oreta Adventures at an affordable rate. Our cook was also amazing and his food was surprisingly really delicious! I couldn’t recommend this company more to beginners as well as the most experienced hikers! I had an incredible experience on the mountain, was able to summit and did so at an affordable price and with a great crew!

A friend and I booked a 4 day safari and a 7 day Lemosho trek up Kilimanjaro. We had a fantastic experience. Goodluck was our safari guide and he was very knowledgeable and was always very organized and prompt.

We had a crew of 19 people to take 3 girls up Kili. We all made it to the summit with the help and encouragement of the whole team. The food was also delicious on both trips -- they were even able to cook vegan for us! We aren't expert trekkers, but we felt very safe and in good hands the whole time and I'd recommend Oreta to anyone.

Our challenge was to climb both Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro our reward was a 3 day safari. Oreta provided its support, expertise, friendship and enthusiasm. Every member of our party of 5 achieved both summits thanks to Oreta's wonderful Guides and Porters.
Oreta's tour consultants, Renalda and Lema, supported us throughout our trip planning, in regular contact by email as we developed our itinerary. Always great advice and prompt replies.
Lema also cared for us on our days in Moshi, arranged the Hotel, transport to and from the airport and local excursions - this made the whole trip completely trouble free.
Meru is a fantastic mountain. At 4566m it provides excellent acclimatisation. The views are spectacular - especially of Kilimanjaro. Wild life is abundant - giraffe, elephant, baboon, monkey, buffalo, zebra. The route is straightforward and the huts are in great condition. It is a great opportunity to get used to high altitude climbing and to get used to your kit.
We chose to climb Kilimanjaro by the Rongai Route. It is the longest ascent and therefore the most successful. It is much quieter than the routes up the south side. It takes you to the foot of Mawenzi Peak and a camp by Mawenzi Tarn which is spectacular. We camped in tents provided by Oreta and ate wonderful Tanzanian food expertly cooked by Ramadani. The final day was hard - VERY hard - but all 5 of us reached the summit at 9 am after 8 hours of climbing and witnessed a wonderful dawn on the way up.
Our Guides, Hebron, Gabriel and Beatus were fantastic. Clearly highly experienced, patient, kind and very safe. Our porters capable, competent, warm and friendly. Oreta is known to pay its porters very well and to support them in gaining qualifications - this was an important factor in our decision to use Oreta.
We planned to see the Ngorogoro Crater Park, but Oreta advised us to visit Tarangeri Park as well. Thank you, Oreta, our closest and best wild life experiences were at Tarangeri and at Arusha Park around Meru.
Oreta Adventures is based in Moshi. It is run by local people and employs local guides and porters. The company is competent, experienced and very safe. I cannot thank them enough.

Despite being the only climber signed up on this trip, Oreta arranged my climb with a guide (Gabriel) and 5 crew. Excellent experience. The mountain is incredible and the crew really looked after me. Gabriel was very encouraging and knowledgable. A bucket list experience happily ticked off.

My wife and I organized a 7-day trip to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (via the Lemosho route). We did quite a lot of research, and Oreta stood out for two reasons: Firstly, they were a local Tanzanian business (from Moshi) and part of a local organization (KPAP) which enforced minimum standards of care (including remuneration) for porters. Secondly, because the (Tanzanian) company Directors live in the United States, their English was excellent - making email communications and arrangements easy and clear. Our positive first impression continued from the moment we were picked up in Arusha and taken to our hostel in Moshi, and then personally greeted by Lema (one of the owners) prior to leaving for Kilimanjaro. Now to the hike... my wife and I discussed this at length, and we honestly cannot think of any way the team (porters, guides & cook) could have done a better job. They were incredibly friendly and pleasant - always smiling and making sure we had everything we needed. The food was amazing (we were astounded by the quality and quantity - we initially thought food was going to be quite basic, but we were received daily banquets in our tent!). The two guides - Rama & Daud - were knowledgeable, patient, supportive, humble and also great to converse with (and learn a bit more about the mountain and the history of Tanzania and East Africa). There was not a moment during the trip that they did not prioritize us - they were 100% laser-focused on making sure the experience was what we wanted (while also making sure we were progressing at a pace that helped us acclimatize and increase our chances of reaching the peak). They were also very diligent in running daily tests and verbal checks to monitor how the altitude was affecting us during the trek. During the final ascent, they were encouraging and genuinely excited that we made it to the top. We have nothing but praise for the team - in every possible way. These guys work so hard - and deserve all the support (usually in the form of tips) they can get - so if you can afford, please give handsomely. Finally, after Summiting and coming down from the mountain, Lema (the owner) took us out to dinner to celebrate. He was kind enough to share some of his life stories and how his company supports the local community. The next day he dropped us off at the airport, always with a big smile on his face. Everyone we dealt with at Oretra was honest, reliable, and excellent in their job. We were VERY impressed and humbled by the experience – and would not hesitate to recommend them to friends and family.

My dad, husband and I just recently returned from a 2-week trip to Tanzania, all organized through Oreta. Let me start out by simply saying how AMAZING Oreta and our trip was!

Lema and Renalda (the owners of Oreta) were extremely responsive from day one and ensured all our questions were answered before we arrived. Oreta Adventures is a locally owned and operated company (meaning 100% of their revenue supports their local economy) and they are part of KPAP - an organization that supports socially responsible Kilimanjaro expeditions (e.g. fair wages for porters). These were two main reasons we chose them and I am so glad we did!

For our Kilimanjaro climb, we chose the 7-day Lemosho route. We had 14 people supporting the three of us all the way: our two amazing guides Beatus and Peter, our outstanding cook ManX (I have never eaten such delicious soups in my life!), and our ever-so-strong and friendly porters Julius (also our waiter who ensured we had whatever we needed), Johnson (our camper who ensured we got the best camp sites by starting out earlier than the rest), Pius, Amadeus, Abel, Erasmus, Godfrey, Yuda, Hatibu, Hamza, and Bamo. Our crew honestly made our trip! We got to know so much about Tanzania, their culture and local customs, and they were the most supportive, friendly crew you could ever ask for! We went during the dry season but got unlucky with the weather whereby it rained or snowed 5 out of 7 days (be sure to bring rain gear and gaiters even if you are going during the dry season!). But, they never stopped smiling and encouraging us all the way! All three of us made it to the summit without any problems thanks to the amazing food and support we received. They are also very safety conscious and every night they checked our oxygen levels and heart rate and had us fill out a quick form to keep track of how we were doing each day. Despite it being much colder and wetter than any of us had anticipated we had a phenomenal time and were able to tick this great achievement off our bucket list!

For our safari, we chose their 5-day trip. At this point in time my mum also joined us, and we had another fellow traveler come along who had just done the Kilimanjaro hike. For the five of us we had our two safari guides Kazi and Dickson and our chef George. Once again, the food was outstanding, and our guides were so knowledgeable and friendly. We saw so many lions and other wildlife up close. At one of our camps the hyenas and zebras even walked right past our tents while we were going to sleep! The only change I would make is that I wish we had spent two nights at each of the camps to make it a little more relaxing after our Kili hike.

We are definitely hoping to come back one day to plan another trip with Oreta – and to hopefully see some of our porters have fulfilled their dream of becoming a guide themselves. Thank you Oreta!

Oreta adventures of Kilimanjaro provided me with their best guide, (Gabriel). As an “older” 60 year old Trekker my success wasn’t guaranteed. Gabriel and the crew of Oreta genuinely cared for my well being and I successfully summitted. We had 7 inches of snow dump on us at midnight when heading out on final day. Tough conditions which had other guides following Gabriel as he's so well respected. Can’t say enough about him. I’ve made some suggestions regarding food provided so that they can outstep the 750 or more guide companies and I hope they adopt some of the suggestions. I also hope that they do follow the guidelines and pay their staff the recommended salary. Finally. Oreta is a trustworthy guide company that will look after your needs well.

My parents and I recently climbed Kilimanjaro and did a Safari with Oreta. From the beginning, Renalda and Lema (the owners of the company) were very responsive, answering any questions we had. This really helped to reduce our worries and fears going into the climb. Once we arrived in Kilimanjaro, Renalda was at the airport to greet us and take us back to the hotel. Renalda and Lema arranged for a free coffee tour for us as we had a free day before we began our climb.

We decided to do the Lemosho route to give us time to acclimatize. The route was absolutely beautiful and we would highly recommend it! We had a very supportive hardworking group to help us get to the top (2 guides, 1 cook, and 13 porters for the 3 of us). The food on the mountain was absolutely incredible- our cook Rama was fabulous- and we were well taken care of. We were fortunate that none of us experienced any severe altitude problems and we all were able to summit (ended up doing it in 7 days instead of the original plan of 8 days).

Once we arrived back at the hotel, Lema came that evening to take us out for dinner. Lema and Renalda were so supportive and encouraging throughout our time in Tanzania. We then did a safari through Oreta, with our amazing guide Richard and cook 'China.' Our 4-day safari did not disappoint. We saw some amazing wildlife and Richard was super knowledgable!

My parents and I were very satisfied with the service we received from Renalda and Lema. It was great to support a locally Tanzanian run company, especially one that treats their porters well and gives them a fair wage.

After undergoing extensive research on different tour companies for our Kilimanjaro Hike and Safari tour, we ended up choosing Oreta adventure. The reasons are that they haven't had a single bad review on Tripadvisor and that they are a local company. With everything that I read about the porter treatment, I wanted to find a local company that will treat the porters appropriately. This company was started by Mr. Lema, who started as a porter originally, and it currently run by Mr. Lema and his girlfriend, Renalda.

From the first email inquiring about the trek and Safari tour, I knew I picked the right company. Since I was planning this for 2 other friends, I wanted to make sure that everything will be taking care. I asked so many questions via email, and they were always patient and responsive to all my questions. Everything was set up prior to our arrival. Side note, obtaining visa at the airport of Kilimanjaro is so much easier than obtaining visa at Tanzania embassy in the USA.

After settling down in the hotel, and dinner, our packing list were checked by the guides. We met our porters the next day, prior to the start of the hike. We ended up with 12 personnel for our 3 person group. We were constantly reminded that this should be a fun hike, and it's not a competition. We hiked at our own pace with our guides, and the porters set up everything for us in the next camp. Guides were very knowledgeable, funny, and helpful (they would sing songs and help carried day packs at times). Everything was taken care for us, and we only needed to focus on the hike. Unfortunately, only 2 of us summited due to AMS with one of the friends. This hike was one of the hardest thing that I did in my life, both physically and mentally. I don't think I could have summited without the help of our guides and crew from Oreta Adventure, but it was worth it at the end. One thing I would recommend is to do this route in 7 days instead of 6 days to give you enough energy for summit night.

Renalda and Lema tried to make sure we were taken care of from the time they picked us up from the airport to the time they dropped us off at the airport. Given their personal experience, they are always looking to improve themselves and to provide the best available service to their clients. I would highly recommend them if you are planning to hike Kilimanjaro and the safari tour.
