We climbed Kilimanjaro via Machame route, it took us 6 days. The climb was really well planned, to make sure we reach the summit at the right time. We had experienced team helping us. Stanley was leading the team. Kalvin stood out as really friendly and helpful team member. Thanks to Viva Africa Tours making our dream to come true! Tip: make sure bring comfortable shoes :)

Where to start. Well, my travel companion and I planned to do the 6-day Machame route up Kilimanjaro, and it can really be overwhelming knowing where to start. Thankfully we knew a couple of people who had climbed the mountain and who strongly recommended working with Viva (shoutout to Agnes). So, we did, and we could not have been more blessed! If I could describe this entire experience in just a couple of words, I would say stress-free (which is saying a lot). They were incredibly responsive, kind, and energetic - all of which made our experiences both before and after the trip absolutely magnificent. I mean, it was magical. The country, the mountain, the people, the food, the culture, you name it; all the best of it was worked into our experience by Viva and it was done so beautifully. I should also add that we were both traveling on a budget, and what they provided was the most affordable. They were with us the entire time; that is, from airport pickup to airport drop-off. Everything was included save for lunch/dinner on just 2 days (we were there for about 10). They really take care of you, and we definitely felt safe the entire time. No doubts or complaints ever came to mind. Just remember 'pole pole' which means 'slowly slowly,' as this is a theme well-suited for life in Tanzania, especially climbing the mountain. Now to get to specifics, if you are going to climb the mountain, Donald and Mbise are excellent guides. Both of them know the land well and are a great team. They both have great enthusiasm for just about everything and will make you feel the most welcome. You are guaranteed to have a fun experience if you request them. Of course, with any step outside of your comfort zone, you need to have an open mind. Almost forget to mention that the food was also awesome, and leftovers are gonna happen (not to worry, nothing is wasted). The same goes for our chef on the safari that followed the trek, Frank. He was such a pleasure to have around. Always smiling, cracking jokes, and making you feel at home. He is truly one of a kind. Then there's Daniel - haha, a king! He knew everything about everything, and then some more. We really lucked out with all of these guys and you should absolutely seek them out. In the end, if you want to feel safe, worry-free, and have an unimaginable level of fun, Viva Africa Tours is the way to go.

My friend and I did a 6-day trek (Machame) followed by a 4-day safari, and we highly recommend Viva Africa! We are students traveling on a budget, and their package was way more affordable than any other companies that we compared it with and we still received quality and professional services. It would also be a private group compared to other companies that lump you into large groups of other parties. From the initial communication and planning, Viva Africa was very responsive and helpful to all our inquiries. They were really accommodating when our plans frequently changed leading up to the trip (we originally started off as a group of 4, but there were only 2 who ended up being able to go). All our transportation was arranged, and meals were covered (excluding lunch/dinner for days in town). Their hostel (Rafiki Backpackers) is conveniently attached to the tour office, so even in Tanzania we were able to communicate with them easily. Every one of their staff were great to work with! For our group of 2, for our trek we had 2 guides (Donald & Mbise), 7 porters, and 1 chef; for the safari we had 1 guide (Daniel) and 1 chef (Frank). We came as clients but left as friends! It was my friend’s birthday the day before the summit, and they surprised us in our tent with a birthday cake + candles + non-alcoholic champagne! The guides were all very knowledgeable and have been in the business for several years. More impressive were the meals on the trip - every meal came with a hot soup, main course, and dessert (usually fresh fruit) as well as hot drinks. Our summit porter even brought us hot tea for the summit - we definitely felt spoiled. Mentally prepare yourself for the bathrooms on the mountain, however, which are just outhouses with holes in the ground for human waste - often messy (and muddy) and especially a challenge for women (I wish I had brought a female urination device for this hike). For the safari, Daniel was an excellent and fun guide to have during the four days. He had a “sixth sense” of where to find certain animals and easily led us to a group of baby cheetahs out of seemingly nowhere. We opted to tent camp, and they provided us a spacious tent (which I could stand in) with comfy mats to roll our sleeping bags on. All our needs were taken care of by Viva Africa and more, and they made our trip an incredible experience.

We did the 8 day Lemosho route with Viva Africa. It was a great experience and we made it to the top. For the two of us we had 2 guides, 1 cook, 1 waiter and 6 porter. This was not too much, but enough to have a nice trip. The guides Donald and Patrick were great, very experienced and they took good care. Especially on the peak night, they had the right view on us and made it happen for us (they also carried the backpacks at some point in time). The tent was good, the food more than enough. All in all, we can recommend Viva Africa for such a hiking tour. It is private, full focus on the group.
