My first visit in MachameNkweshoo was in 2012 when I volunteered in Arusha as a retired teacher. While the plane was landing I had a first view to the impressing Kilimandscharo mountain. Later I came across a leaflet about „Cultural tourism“ and discovered Machame Nkweshoo. As it was my wish to get as close as possible to the Kilimandscharo mountain it was just the right place form me.
I did not only see the mountain from a short distance, I also enjoyed to walk to the cave, to plant a tree and to cook Mtori on an open fire in the traditional kitchen. After four weeks of permanent traffic noise in Arusha I was happy to relax in a natural environment.
Since then I have come to Machane Nkweshoo as often as possible to calm down from my voluntary work in different schools. I also took my family and friends to this lovely place when they came to visit me in Tansania. All of them enjoyed either relaxing on the ground’s big terrace or taking part in different events like making coffee, hiking to water falls, visiting the local market and the old church. We also tried the local beer „Mbege“ on Saturday evening along with women and men from the village.
Meanwhile my husband and me have become familiar with the Shoo-family, and it is a pleasure to see the children growing up and the teenagers turning into adults.
By and by we also have learnt about culture, traditions and history of the Chagga by following the traces of the missionaries Bruno Gutmann and Johannes Rebmann.

I had a wonderful weekend at the Machame Nkweshoo Cultural Tourism homestay. Stella is a lovely host and Hans is a very informative guide! I enjoyed hiking to nearby waterfalls, making coffee, eating delicious traditional food, drinking mbege (banana beer) and learning so much about the local Chagga culture and history. I would highly recommend staying here if you are looking for an authentic cultural experience in a peaceful village surrounded by nature!

i stayed here for one week as a volunteer and it was a great experience! mama stella, edith, and hans made me feel comfortable from the moment i arrived until i left. the area is so beautiful and peaceful and everyone in the village is so kind. you will get to explore the surrounding areas (caves, waterfall, plantations, village), eat traditional foods, and learn about traditional chagga culture and lifestyle. they provide a really comfortable homestay experience as well as day tours, perfect for both solo travellers and families. this is really a wonderful place worth visiting if you are in the kilimanjaro region of tanzania!

We can only recommend, especially if you are looking for a truly authentic countryside experience in Tanzania (and if you want to make sure that your visit will support the local community!). We spent a wonderful time exploring the Chagga culture with our lovely hosts. We particularly appreciated the cooking lessons and even had the chance to milk the cows at 5 am (free option of course!). Very nice atmosphere, it feels like visiting family on Sunday... So, special thanks to our aunts, Mama Stella & Mama Edith, and to our cousin, Hans ;) You rock

We spend 2 days and 2 nights at Mama Stella farm and it was a really great experience ! All the women welcomed us with a huge and sincerely smile, they shared every moment warmly and with love of life ! Hans was also a good guide during this stay, with so much energy and humour.
We shared cooking moments with the Mamas, hiking in coffee and banana plantations, participating in artisanal coffee roasting.
Definitively the place to be to discover Chagga culture with respect and happiness !
