My friend and I did their coffee tour in January. It was a great way to get a glimpse into the "real" Tanzania - which is very different to the safaris and trekking. We were picked up from our hotel in Moshi and taken up into the communities on the slopes above the town where we met our guide Idi. Idi took us through the whole coffee process which was very interesting, we got to meet one of the families growing the coffee, see their coffee and pick some of their beans. One of the highlights for me was being able to make and drink our own coffee! I purchased some coffee beans from the community shop which has been delicious - just disappointing that it was more expensive than the coffee being sold at the airport! Lunch at the end was delicious. Thank you Idi for a great tour - it was a great way to spend our morning before flying back to the UK.

We booked a cooking lesson and a coffee tour with Straton at Kiliman Cultural. Both were great times of cultural share. We learned a lot about the Chagga tribes with very nice persons (Thanks Merry, Agatha, Elizabeth and Deogratius for the Cooking, and Denis and Fatuma for the Coffee!) - the ambience was extremely relaxed, exactly what we needed after the Kilimandjaro trek! Next time we come, we will camp there - it is so calm compared to Moshi Downtown.

Kiliman Cultural Tourism picked us up from the airport in the afternoon and took us to their beautiful village where we started off with a delicious lunch. The tour then started with a walk through the hillside forest passing banana trees, raspberry bushes, and most importantly, coffee plants! Our guide Crispin had great energy, spoke a handful of languages, and was fun! He explained the whole process, and showed us everything. Then we did everything! The best cup of coffee of my life. The tour will gave me a new appreciation for one of my favourite drinks. Highly recommend this company, very professional and welcoming. Thank you so much, asante.

Amazing Amazing place. This is a non profit Co-operative that works with all the local small family coffee producers to offer a tour of their small holdings to see how coffee is produced and it gets to our western coffee shops/supermarkets. They support and harvest their coffee crops and ensure by collecting and working at one group they get a better/fair price which they share equally among all the producers. This is such a worth while visit and tour , with an amazing lunch thrown in which you are hellping to support this community co-operative. With opportunity to buy Fresh ground/whole bean coffee bags and you will be shocked how cheap it is at their part of the production cycle compared to what we pay as end user in USA or Europe. You also get amazing views of Mount Kilimanjaro if weather nice and Moshi as your on the slopes of the mountain. This is a must, amazing views, so intresting , opportunity to get a bargain in coffee bags ( 1kg ) taste amazing coffee and helping the local community. Call/whats app Peter on +255 782 324 121 to arrange .

This visit was the highlight of my stay in Moshi. On the slope of Kilimanjaro I learned about kahawa, coffee, from planting, harvesting, processing and cooking. I made (with a lot of help from Babu (Dennis) and a local farmer family how to shell and roast beans over an open fire in a clay pot. We made coffee and sat on the porch and drank it. Delicious! Peter was easy to reach on WhatsApp on arranged for pick up and return to my hotel in Moshi. Only saw the peak briefly through the cloud cover. Well worth the visit. I’ll never fail to appreciate my lattés when I get home.

We had an amazing tour of village coffee production on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro through Kiliman Cultural Tourism. The tour cost (~$50 USD per person) included pick up/drop off at our hotel, a 3 hour village walking tour, end-to-end coffee production the "traditional way", full traditional lunch, and an expert local guide. Our guide, Crispin, was from one of the villages engaged in this cooperative coffee production. He was extremely knowledgeable both about the coffee production process and about the plants, animals, and life in the area. We followed Crispin on paths to a village home, where we were welcomed by the family. We then picked coffee beans, milled them to remove the coffee cherry, separated the dried husk from the bean, roasted the beans, ground them, and enjoyed the final product. After this, we got to walk through the village through the jungle and see how the coffee plant was integrated into the forest/farms. We enjoyed an extensive lunch (our vegetarian preference was accommodated with ease) that included banana, banana stew, and banana beer. The banana beer was enjoyed on the lawn overlooking the mountain. Just a fantastic experience, thank you so much!
PS you can actually camp here, which would be amazing too.

Very professional team. We contacted the coordinator via Whatsapp, he was very responsive and we quickly agreed on a date and time. We were picked up at Moshi Bus Station, driven to the location and back at the end. Our guide, Mr. Kessy gave very detailed information about everything possible related to coffe history in the region, coffee making process and lots of local info. The hands on experience of every step from fruit to cup is very well structured and enjoyable.
The lunch was very delicius and the cooks were also nice.
It is also possible to camp at the compound, and there are other activities to do around.
More info possible to get via Whatsapp directly from the coordinator. So it's absolutely suitable for independent travelers.
Thank you!

My wife and I are from Carolina. We came to Tanzania for Kilimanjaro climb. After the climb we had two extra days to stay at Moshi so one of our friends introduced us to this amazing tour. The price was great for the time and the food was phenomenal and the guide was so kind and knowledgeable. He gave us a ton of knowledge about the local tribe chaga, we also learned a lot about the coffee processing. We got a time to enjoy drinks with friends and new friends we made right there. 100% recommended if you have a free day in Moshi.

We spent a fabulous day out on the lower slopes of the Kilimanjaro. We first went in a coffee plantation where we learnt everything about coffee, fair trade and had the opportunity to make our own coffee. We then visited a Chagga village and our guide, Teddy, brought us to her parents' house to cook a traditional meal. We participated in each step of the preparation and felt there like home. We also fed the cattle (that is kept inside the house in the Chagga tradition) and really saw how the life in a Chagga village looks like. It was a real privilege to share that day with Teddy and her family and we would certainly recommend Njari Treks. This immersion in the Tanzanian countryside is going to be one of the great memories of our trip to Tanzania.

The actual tour was great. Our tour guide was named Mike who spoke impeccable english and was very knowledgeable about coffee and world affairs. Highly recommended
However some parts of the tour could be improved. First after paying at the local office in Moshi at the KNCU hotel, we were instructed to get on a dalla dalla at the bus stand and go to Timbrini where "Joseph" will be waiting for us. There was no Joseph but there was a Mike who was great but after the dalla dalla ride we had to walk almost a half hour uphill to get to the coffee plantation. They advertise it as a 3-4 hour activity but it was more like a full day (9-5). We didn't mind the walk. The scenery was nice and the weather was much cooler than Moshi.
All in all a GREAT tour and a must for any coffee connoisseur but a little misleading in regards to the transportation.

Hello!
Just wondering what time they usually pick you up (is it a morning or afternoon tour), and roughly how long does the tour take? We won't quite have a full day but we don't want to miss out!!
Also, is there an opportunity to buy the coffee from the farmers afterwards, or should we buy it elsewhere, like a market, before we leave Tanzania?
Thank you in advance!!

I was picked up from the hotel at about 9. The basic tour finishes with lunch but there are other activities you can do. There is a small shop there at which I purchased a small pack of coffee.
