Great dive centre, really relaxed but very professional at the same time. I have dived all over the world and Mafia Island really sits up there in how good the diving was. Maybe i shouldnt be writing this and telling everyone the secret!! They have lovely dive masters in Abu & Hassan and what's really great is how everyone really knows their stuff, our boat captain was an advanced padi diver which is great to see. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, its like a lovely little dive family! Diving itself is totally dependant on the tide timings so when you are there be prepared to relax in to the schedule of the sea and the timings will change on a daily basis but if like me, thats the whole point of your trip then it really makes no difference as you'll know you are going at the right times. Thanks guys and I will see you again !

The diving club of Big Blu on Mafia Island is your perfect hub for diving, bird watching, walking along the beach and simply enjoying the beauty of Africa. Big Blu offers both luxury huts and simple glamping tents with beds for travellers on a budget. For whale sharks, a trip to the other side of the island brings you to the right beach.

This place was excellent. I wanted to swim with the whale sharks, scuba dive and have a reasonable accommodation. Everyone here was SO friendly (including the resort pups and car!) and helpful. The second day I went to swim with the whale sharks, they pushed it an hour early to accommodate my early flight that day. When I dove, the dive master let me go anywhere I wanted (that’s never happened before) and I was greeted back at the boat with coffee! I stayed in a glamp tent as it was just myself and thought I should save a dollar where I could. As a woman, I felt very safe as they have a guard 24/7 and a gate. It was nice that this place had everything (ie whale sharks, diving, accommodation, airport transfer, food, etc).

I was only on Mafia Island for a few days but really wanted to dive! About a month before the trip, I contacted two dive operators. The other operator never contacted me but Big Blu answered me back immediately! Maura and the Abou answered all my questions and reserved me a spot. I got a two tank dive in and wished I'd had a few more days to dive! I am a PADI instructor and usually bring my own gear when I dive while traveling and was a little concerned because with the weight limits to fly to Mafia, I could only bring my mask, but I needn't have worried. Their equipment was all good quality. A couple of people I met the day before, really wanted to dive and Big Blu was great to accomodate them last minute, including a refresher course for one! They have to base dive times around the tides so, if you try to book weeks ahead, the times will only be estimates. Also, the visibility does fluctuate with the tides but the corals are very healthy and there were lots of small to medium colorful fish and a HUGE moray! It was fun to go out to the dive site in a wooden Dhow! I was impressed with their organization and excellent safety/dive briefing. There were only 4 of us diving and we had 2 dive masters-Hissan and Gideon. Hissan did a great job pointing out nearly invisible critters like leaf fish and crocodilefish while Gideon kept an eye on everyone. Since there was a little current, we just swam along the reef and the boat picked us up at the end of the dive. We had tea time, biscuits (cookies) and bananas between dives. I just wish I had more time to dive with them! I will have to go back!

Really fantastic diving and would have loved to stay at the resort and do more dives. Unfortunately the govermnent greed, which is normal in Tanzania requires tourist to pay an addition 48usd including vat per day for a couple. Over a few days this really adds up.
