What an experience , more than just a visit to a nursery. The owner Johan is quite an interesting & colourful character. He is also an avid Pink Floyd fan as he expressed many times & can be seen throughout the garden. He also has some interesting signs on the entrance gate & throughout the garden
The best part of course was walking through the garden , a big variety of cacti & a few other plants to . We were fascinated by the different types of cacti.
Johan has quite extensive knowledge about all his plants & we spent almost 2 hrs at the nursery chatting to him & strolling through other parts of the nursery. He also made a lot of very colourful plant holders out of cooldrink bottle bottletops
There is a small charge of R30pp if you just want to stroll through the garden which is waived if you buy some plants to the value of R200 if I recall
The nursery is open from 8am-1pm & really worth a visit

This place is like a mystical fairy garden with every (huge) cactus and succulent. It is a "have to" visit for Graaff Reinet. I see online that some people have criticized the owner, however we found him to be a charming, excentric person who says that some days he does not like humans. He is a highly intelligent, retired lawyer and we ended up chatting to him for two hours while sitting on buckets in the garden. A very special day.

Forget about the negativity of some people. Go and experience it yourself and have a chat with the owner even if you do not agree with his ideas and views. The most interesting character I have met for ages. The cacti is something to behold and he doesn't interfere with nature that's why some see it as neglect and a lack of maintenance. Huge variety of cacti for sale at very reasonable prices. Will definitely not drive through Graaff-Reinet again without popping in.

We were so looking forward to visiting Obesa because of our love for plants. On entering the garden, we were shocked to see how untended and unloved this place is. It was overgrown and there is no maintenance of the garden. It is obvious that this has been so for years. We are always happy to pay entrance fees, but these fees obviously do not go to improvement or maintenance of this garden.

This is one of the most beautiful natural gardens I have ever seen. Like an exotic forest of cacti and succulents. Hard to believe one horder could collect and propagate such an eden of indeginous karoo flora.
Next time we shall make sure to have all the time in the world to enjoy your amazing garden. Humbling experience we had. You are a hoot too Anton.
As for other reviewers who did not appreciate their interactions with you... well who cares. You are a rock star who calls it like it is. Our short chat was a highlight of our short visit.

If you have any interest in gardens, this is well worth a visit. Stunning cacti and quirky touches to entertain. You can simply visit and marvel at the incredible variety, or buy plants of various sizes like any normal nursery. But it's a sight well worth seeing. This photo doesn't do the nursery justice.

The owner of the Obesa Cactus garden in Murray street spoils any visit to a place that could have been an amazing experience. He is rude and pushes his political beliefs and prejudices onto any person that dares enter into his kingdom. Full of prejudice and discriminating against people purely on their place of birth.
Pass by. Don’t visit. It will spoil your experience of a lovely town with lovely people. Rather visit the Obesa nursery that is on the way out of town. Towards Aberdeen. It is run by the son of the rude old man at the Obesa Garden. Still great cactii to see and buy but non of the discrimination.

Yes, it's world-renown for its collection of cacti. But please consider for one moment how the collection was acquired in the first instance... If ethically and environmentally friendly travel is important to you, better to avoid this one.

USA citizens please take note. The owner took exception to the 2016 US election results and has a statement on display on the entrance gate stating that US citizens are not welcome. Please note that this is a private garden and in no means a reflection on the general view of the local tourism organisation. For the rest of the world, a must see attraction. For US citizens, ask for directions to the owners son's nursery in town.

Called in for a quick visit whilst staying in town had a great chat with the owner on arrival who was clearly passionate about his garden. Lovely peaceful spot and great cacti whilst some have said its overgrown ownef explained he doesn't pull things out when they die but lets them feed the ogre plants so totally natural environments
