Come on!! You guys can do better than this! A great set of stories to be told - but none of them really explained. Not once is the story of Gideon Scheepers properly told although there are some great items around the story of his capture, trial and execution. We had to google it to understand his significance while walking around the room. The same with the second world war and the role of the Midlands Regiment. Someone needs to ask a retired history teacher to spend some time here to turn a bit of a mess into something quite special

The Military History Museum is one of the 5 museums in Graaff-Reinet. If you plan to visit more than one museum it is better to buy all the tickets at the first museum for a discounted price (Entry for one museum is R15 and more than one is R10 each)

The museum is between the Urquhart House Museum and Reinet House. It consists of one hall with information about the military history of Graaff-Reinet. The information, pictures and newspaper articles on the walls are very interesting (if you take the time to read it)

This is the only one of the five Graaff Reinet museums to have been built relatively recently ( 2005) - all the rest are much older and have heritage site status.
The collection of the military memorabilia from the Anglo-Boer war and the two World Wars is quite small, although it serves as a poignant reminder of the terrible hardships faced by the local community, esp during the Anglo-Boer war, in which there were no winners! Read up on the experiences of people involved in both sides of the conflict before you visit, so that your visit will be more meaningful.

Graaff Reinet has many museums and rightly so, it is an area of much importance in the country's history. The Anglo Boer War especially so, it set the pace for 20th Century with its many dramatic changes. The Museum does igt a disservice.

This was an insightful visit. Just to see what our forefathers had to cope with and their ingenuity to solve the plroblems which they had to cope with.

We were most impressed with the displays and annotations. Good coverage of so many wartime encounters and such a lot of artifacts from such a sparsely populated area. Graaff Reinet certainly made a worthwhile contribution when asked for both military support and memorabilia.

The museum deals mainly with district's involvement in the Anglo-Boer War and the two World Wars.

The limited scope did not bother me, but I would have liked something on earlier conflicts in the district.

Tucked away behind Urquhart House. I had to ask for a key to enter. A wealth of information on local involvement in conflicts of the 20th C.

The Anglo Boer War information was a little sketchy and assumes some prior knowledge. I was very impressed with the story of the midlands units that served in WWII.
