This was one of the most delightful churches we visited in Ethiopia. The church is still in use and monks are often present in their yellow garb.

It stands in its own enclosure surrounded by a wall with twelve small towers. Trees provide shade. The church is notable for seven ostrich eggs on a medallion which is on the roof. Women and men enter from separate entrances for prayer.

The interior is its glory. Wall paintings cover every inch. The date for these is debated but this is not really an issue. There is an excellent St. George and the dragon but my particular favourite was a squat Devil. Other murals depict the life of Christ. The ceiling is bright with angels. Of course flash photography is forbidden.

Wonderfully preserved paintings cover the inside of this small church. The colours and details are truly amazing. I would advise you to visit with a knowledgeable guide. Mine was excellent in his explanations; without him I may have missed the significance of many of the decorative details.

I took a day tour of Gonder and this was part of it.

Without a guide you will get see the murals but won't learn about the stories behind the art, which is very interesting.

It cost us 200Bir per person to get into the church, which is the same price as the Castle and Bath combined, and I personally feel the castle is more impressive, but I guess it depends on what you like.

A gorgeous place of reverence. I felt the love for this place and its people walking in. It’s a must see when in this area.

I don't know how many people will be traveling in the near future, but I now have a lot of time to catch up on reviews from my last trip. The church is an interesting place to visit with some beautiful artwork. Notice the Gondar Cross and a unique sign at the entrance to the church.

This church is home to the famous murals and ceiling of painted angels. It is beautiful and engrossing. We also liked the birds on the park-like grounds.

A lovely church with peaceful grounds. The paintings in the church are said to be original and are in very good condition. The ceiling is probably the highlight. Inside the church it's quite dark so a torch was needed to see some of the artwork. Having a guide is useful so you know what is being depicted.
Men enter through the front, women through the door on the right- shoes off, head scarf recommended... also modest dress. A young girl had inappropriate short shorts on and the staff weren't happy- made her cover up with a sarong. Be respectful.
Sign out front saying not to enter if you've had intercourse with your spouse the night before!

Debre Berhan Selassie Church, Gondar, Ethiopia. The Sistine Chappel of Ethiopia! Stunning! Reportedly, a swarm of bees protected the church, prevented it from being destroyed! Bees are great warriors as well!

The murals on the walls of this church are even more amazing than any others we saw in all Ethiopia. It's a lovely compound around the church as well.
