We visited Isla on our trip to Uyuni, It's an amazing place, and everyone should see it one day. The cacti are beautiful and the view of the Salar from the peak is breathtaking. One of the most beautiful views I have ever seen in my life! Definitely a must-see in Bolivia.

We booked a full day tour and this was included after lunch at the abandoned Salt Hotel. It took close to an hour to arrive and allowed us time to digest an sleep a bit. You are allowed to hike around the island and marvel at the coral caves so far from the sea.

A magical place with one of the most beautiful views on the continent. It looks like something out of a story.
It seems inexplicable, but the place has a forest of hundreds of gigantic cactuses raised towards the sky. They are thick thorny columns that can be up to 10 meters high and beautify the island every time they bloom with buds the size of a hand. There are thousand-year-old cacti there, witnesses to the history of the place.
You can not miss!

Very impressive. In middle of the salt flats, covered with giant cacti, a few special birds and lava and other rocks, BUT.... absolutely beautiful and either of the two climbs (long and short) to top give great views of the surrounding area with 15 volcanoes. You really think you are on a lake frozen over. Bright sun, pastel colors to the landscape. cacti grow 1 centimeter per year so many of these beauties are 1000 years old or more

An unusual site where any one get variety of experience. From climbing rock to the top, see hummingbird in a place surrounded by desert of tens of miles, lots of cactus. It’s a perfect place for a day trip.

An ancient coral island in the middle of the salt plains, with pretty unique cacti too. The views and picture opportunities are stunning. Dont miss this.

interesting stop during our one day tour. fun to explore and great for taking pictures. You can hike up to the top or just walk around it at the bottom if you're feeling the effects of the altitude.

A must-see stop on the famed Salt Flats, the unique microclimate of the 'Island' makes it home to the tallest cactuses in the area, many several hundred years old.
The striking contrasts of blue sky, white salt flat and brown/ green cactus make for some amazing photo ops.
To get the most of the Island you'll need to hike around 15mins to the highest point - moderate fitness is needed, especially because of the altitude.

The cacti are huge! Really worth it as part of the Salt Flat visit. It is in the middle of the salt flat, and the whole island is filled with these giants

How do you get to the Island from the mainland?
Is it something to walk along or drive up to?

The cactus growing on the island resemble the Saguaro cactus growing in in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona , in the United States. they are scientifically called "Carnegiea gigantea" from the order "Caryophyllales". My question is .....are they some how related?

Can you self-drive here? Or do you have to go with a tour group? Planning to drive around Bolivia ourselves but can't see a route to here on google maps!

Hiring a guide does not mean there are no dangers, 2 or 3 years ago two Belgian girls got killed, sitting on the roof of the guids 4wd who was driving much to hard, there are some cowboy's outthere to!
Do not rely on tracks because they will go everywhere, but if you're handy with GPS coördinates all should work out fine. Of course it does not show you a real road, just a strate line to the coördinates you've put in, so still have to look out for all sorts of obstacles, if you're not used to driving a 4x4 ok, look for a guide then.

Estimado Diego,

Just wondering how to book a 3 day tour with beds and private bathrooms with a reliable tour company. Should we wait until we arrive in Uyuni and ask around or does someone want to recommend a company?. Thanks!

We just did the day trip because of our time limitations ...but "Red Planet" who we went with came highly recommended on the net & even by another tour operator we used in La Paz. Our guide & driver were awesome, very knowledgable and experienced, had the best day ever. Our guide talked about the 3 day tour and it sounded like an amazing experience. I don't think you can go wrong with them. In saying that, I have no idea about the facilities available on the 3 day tour.
