Beautiful. Blue lagoon, with white edges of ice and borax, splashed by the wind. The pink dots that were visible from afar were the famous flamingos of the altiplano. The almost vegetation-free mountains around it served as a frame for that cold oasis in the middle of the desert. It was one of the most striking images I've ever had in my life. We parked in a corner of the lagoon and when we went down we could soon see the strength and cold of the wind that blew there. We walked along the banks to the point where the flamingos were concentrated, many of them immobile, paradinhos with one leg in the shallow water of the lagoon.

One of our first stops on our way to the desert nature preserve. Loads and loads of flamegos. Windy, cold, high altitude beauty. Surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. Various groups of Vicuñas drinking water. Took dozens of photos and will be hard to choose which ones to use

Situated in the Avaroa National Park, this attraction was part of a four day Jeep tour from Tupiza to Uyuni. It is part of a group of lakes. Although this one is not so heavily promoted it is among the most beautiful, with colored grasses growing along the shore line. In all my travels I think this area is one of the most spectacular I have seen.

If you want to experience this place you will have to do a Jeep tour, wither from Uyuni or from Tupiza, as you could easily get lost on your own. Sometimes the road dissappears and you will find yourself driving along a river bed. Luckily at around BOB 800 these tours are inexpensive.

This is one of the first lagoons when heading south from Uyuni on a 3-day tour. This was the first place where we saw flamingos - lots of them! The colours are stunning and it is easy to take wonderful photos, including the volcanoes in the background.

This lake is gorgeous. Between the flamingos, the mountains, and the high altitude, visiting is a surreal experience. However, I would not recommend visiting this on your own. You really need a guide and a truck; the roads are barely roads and maps won't help you in this desolate part of Bolivia. It's like driving on Mars.

We reached Laguna Canapa about an hour by jeep from San Juan de Rosario, on the second day of our three day crossing from Uyuni to San Pedro de Atacama. The lagoon is beautiful: various shade of blue of the water, dotted by the pink of a large number of flamingos, the white of the borax on its edges, some yellowish little plants in the blue of the lake just in front of us, the blue of the sky, the brown of the mountains in the background and the sounds of the wind and the flamingos.....
We loved it...

An amazing stop which is mostly likely part of your tour. We visited during winter so the lake had quite a number of flamingoes. One of the nicest sights to see.

When we arrived to this lake, we had the pleasure of meeting a man who is living in this desolate part of desert and who has built a place to rest and a bathroom. He is also in charge to keep a good part of the road free of stones or potholes. Our guide Edgar took us there not only to admire the beauty of the Laguna but also to have a well deserved lunch time. While Edgar was preparing the lunch we had the opportunity of walking towards the lake, which was surrounded by patches of salt and snow. Since we were in winter there weren't many flamingos, but it did not matter as the beauty of the Laguna itself was enough to delight the eyes. I could not reach the edge of the lake as my 89 years old mom was with me and she was not strong enough to climb down in a safe manner. When we arrived the wind was not an issue but when we decided to head back to the resting place the wind gained strength and almost knocked us down. Luckily the worst part of the windstorm happened when we were having lunch. Once we finished, the calm had returned to this isolate and beautiful lake.

This was one of our first stops from Uyuni to San Pedro. Absolutely beautiful, which we could have spent longer. Great place for photos, very colourful - The laguna, flamingos, and mountains in the distance - a gem of a place. Don't miss.
