- Gary RCorsicana, Texas151 contributionsMehWe have done other "gem" hunts in the past on other vacations to other areas. When we said we were going to Hot Springs we thought about doing the Diamond Crater mining thing but others recommended this place so we opted for this over the diamond place. Basically, you're digging through trash dumped from the mine so it is a crap shoot to if you find anything at all. The staff are very upfront about you find what you're willing to work to find but don't get your hopes up. There were 5 of us digging for a couple of hours in the hot summer sun and found only a few slivers of clear quartz. Nothing of substantial size or value and far less than anything those who recommended it over the diamond place eluded to being possible. In the end, we had fun searching but just nothing to really show for it. We were just as likely to have had the same luck and fun at the diamond mine but at least there we would have a chance at finding a real gemstone. I guess what I'm saying is that if the odds are the same at both places then I'd rather take my odds to where I can find a diamond and not just a piece of quartz. Take gloves too! Washing the rocks and stones you find can be a bit dangerous with the sharp edges some of those stones have. We ended up with several small cuts on our fingers from where we rubbed the stones while cleaning them. Gloves would have spared us had we thought about.Thank you for your review, Gary826. First let me say, Meh, is not what we want our guest experience to be. For that, I am also disappointed for you. People love watching the miners bring up loads of tailings from the commercial mine to the public digging area. Those who have watched the process of loading and delivering, have seen that the miners do not take the time to cull crystals. We do recommend 3-4 hours of digging because it is a hunt that takes time and you will definitely get dirty. In addition to the instructions given during t check in at the Gift Shop, we have staff members who drive through the digging area offering to give tips on what to look for. For anyone considering digging for crystals and want to know as much as possible prior to coming, take a moment to watch You Tube videos. We appreciate your patronage Gary.Written September 9, 2020This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2020Written August 17, 2020
- Rebecca CGriffith, Indiana85 contributionsFun but hard work!I really enjoyed my day here, but if I come back I think I will come in the late fall or winter, because my son and I were really hot and sweaty! It is seriously hard work digging through the dirt. Also, make sure you wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty because the dirt is red clay-like and it might stain clothes. I also wish I had brought gloves, because I cut my thumb pretty badly on a crystal or something digging thru the dirt. My only other complaint is it is kind of expensive to get in. It cost us $25/person plus we bought the little plastic tools too. We didn’t stay that long because we were kind of ill-prepared and also had a spa appointment in Hot Springs, so we only dug for like an hour, but we did manage to find some crystals and we had a lot of fun. If I go back, I would go a little earlier in the day, bring gloves and water and stay longer, taking breaks to rest and then going back to look more. I actually am glad we had a spa appointment afterwards, because going there and getting all dirty and hot and then going to Hot Springs about 20 minutes away to indulge in the mineral baths and spa was a really nice day. We found several crystals (small but pretty) and lots of interesting rocks. A kid found a pretty big crystal while we were there so there are definitely nice stuff to be found. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and may return next time we are in the area.Thank you for coming to dig with us. We appreciate your review and hope you do come to dig again. If so, Don't forget to zip-line!Written September 9, 2020This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2020Traveled with familyWritten August 14, 2020
- Jocelyn BPort Townsend, Washington30 contributionsFun crystal digging and affordable campingThis was our first time digging for crystals and it was a blast! We went all out and got the combo package. You can dig for crystals, take a tour, and have limitless zip lining for $55. This is a unique experience where you can dig for quartz crystals near an active quartz quarry. You can take home anything you find. Make sure to have plenty of water and wear clothing to protect yourself from the sun and mud. After some digging, we went zip lining over the quarry. Joseph gave us our safety talk and hooked us in. He was great and it was thrilling! We got to ride in a military truck down into the quarry, tour the gallery, and see how they clean the crystals, while Cheyenne told us the history of the mine. The gift shop is full of gems and stones for souvenirs. The staff are friendly and courteous. You can mine from 8am until 6pm. There is even a wash station to rinse off your crystals and check out your treasures before you leave. The campground was great for the price, $13.75 for water and electric with a dump station on site. They have laundry facilities but no WiFi. The washing machines aren’t that great but it was better than nothing! The campsites are full of quartz pieces and each fire pit is lined with quartz from past patrons. We actually found some good pieces right at our site! The host, Shawn, was friendly and attentive. Everyone was kind and considerate and there was definitely a positive vibe. I would recommend this park and the mining experience. We really dug it 😂Hey, Jocelyn! We are happy you really dug it! 😊 Thank you for coming to Ron Coleman Mining and taking the time to leave an informative review of your experience. We appreciate both very much! My family has visited here for four years. When we started coming we found clusters and really nice points. The last 2 times we visited it was an average to below average visit in my opinion. Only found small broken points and no clusters. Was told the last 2 times the dirt has been worked, but no new signs of material brought from mine. When we first started coming they would dump new material throughout the day. I have not seen new dirt brought in. I guess if you are just looking for small broken points you will be happy.
For the amount of money they charge, it would be nice to find some significant pieces and not just broken pieces that appear to have been sifted through many times. Disappointed!

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are very sorry your experience was disappointing. Though it will not help your experience, once the rain stops long enough, for fresh material will be delivered from the commercial mine.

The staff were nice. The gift shop clean. A little pricey in the gift shop. The rv site itself was clean. The bathrooms, men or womens, were nasty. They had a laundry area but no change machine. Not the cleanest either. The sites were roomy but if you only want to stay a night on the weekend you are hosed. You have to pay for two days. They will tell you they are fully booked but when we were there they were not. They do try to work with you if you have soecial needs.

Crystals were EASY to find everywhere we looked and prices were very reasonable. We went two days in a row and my grandson got "hooked" on riding the zip line. If you get the opportunity, take the mine tour as well for insight on how the crystals are mined. All staff were friendly, informed, and accomodating--especually Shawn who ran the zip line. Very laid back and comfortable place. We will go back again soon even though it's 8 hours from home.

This is a good place to find quartz crystals but it is in full sun and the digging can be tough. They bring up truckloads of rock to dump in the mining area and it can be tricky to dig into as many large rocks come up and can slip.Bring sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat.
There is some easy digging for children but please supervise.
This area can be hit or miss as far as the number of crystals found and people are like vultures on roadkill when the big trucks are dumping.
They also have tours and Zip Lines for additional fees.
They also have a small campground that is very reasonable in price It has had the bathrooms redone and new machines for laundry are being installed shortly.

My boys are huge into rock collecting, and getting to dig for their own quartz was a huge thrill for them. Very well run, safe environment. Took the tour of the mine in an old army truck - that was really neat. Also part of the tour was seeing their museum of extremely rare rocks - VERY cool. Very large rock shop. Would definitely recommend.

We stumbled on this experience while exploring during our honeymoon to the area. We took the tour on a whim—and learned so much! The crystal exhibits were fascinating, as was the trip down to the bottom of the mine and through the cleaning process. The digging itself was so fun! You are able to drive your vehicle down to the digging area, and I would recommend making sure you have water and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty! We purchased digging tools and gloves at the shop prior to digging, but you could definitely bring your own and save that part.
Overall, it was a super fun experience and we not only learned a lot, but we also came away with a few really nice crystals! It was a fun way to pass our afternoon!

We've mined for crystals in other locations and had good luck and a good time, but Ron Coleman -- not so much. The mining was just okay. The RV park was pretty awful. They required a photo of our driver's license and a face shot when we checked in, which caused us to wonder whether they have issues with safety. The bathhouse was a mess, neither well-maintained nor clean, though the sign in the women's bathhouse about not using the sinks to dye your hair was sort of entertaining. The bathhouse is only accessible by locks with codes (which didn't work), which again made us wonder whether safety is a problem here. I wouldn't stay here again.

Thank you for visiting and leaving a review. From October 2021 to January 2022 we completely remodeled the bathhouses/restrooms and laundromat. The locks with codes have also been upgraded, are locked 24/7 so only persons staying in the campground have a code. Actually, it makes most females traveling alone feel secure when they know the shower house they are using is locked. There is a campground host on-site as well.

I have been coming to Ron Coleman's for 20 years ( sometimes two and three times a year) from Texas. I have brought, friends, relatives, grandchildren...you name it with me and no one has ever walked out of there without finding beautiful crystals. I was reading some of the negative posts, and all I can say about those is they should have asked for instruction on where to dig or what to look for. The staff there has always been super helpful and friendly, and eager to make everyone have a wonderful experience. My house, yard, and offices are so full of Coleman crystals that you would think I was part of the family (:

We had a wonderful time! It is very relaxing and we found thumb-sized crystals (my brother) and some gorgeous tiny clusters smaller than a dime. The entry fee was small (even smaller for us seniors). It is VERY muddy, so come expecting to get dirty!!! I highly recommend this for a couple of days mini-vacation.

Good thing I love to dig in the dirt, cause no crystals were dug. It was a beautiful weather day to be outside following days of rain that assisted digging. It would have been a perfect experience if someone, (the two who took my money), would have explained what to do and what to look for. There was no help beyond giving me a bag and selling me gloves. I indicated it was my first time there, not helpful staff!! Look for a $5 off coupon. Maybe the $55 tour is informative on how to dig, but that was just too much, and I only did the dig admission. Experts seem to come for the day with wagons and shade umbrellas. Took home pretty rocks for my dry river bed, but no crystals. While I struck out, I would take young children there.

59Gypsygirl - We are very sorry you were not given instructions on what to look for, instructed to come back to the Gift Shop or to flag down our staff who go to the digging area throughout the day. They are there to help persons who are not finding plenty of crystals. It’s very disappointing to us as well when a guest does not have a great experience, If you are willing, our GM, Jay, would like you to call him at 501-984-5396

Sorry. I've been once, and I have no clue when they turn up fresh dirt.
We came from Texas and are here have visited sevreal mines. With the Annual Dig contest, Is your site one that is sponsering this dig and are you allowing people to come and dig without competing. We have two more days here and didn't want to be involved in the contest. I have an elderly parent with me and was hoping to hit one or two more mines before we head back.

There is no competition here. Come dig for crystals!
Do you ever buy raw gems? I will be there the beginning of October, and do a bit of garnet mining in NC. I also have an amethyst half tower.

My husband and I went to Ron Colemans Crystal Mine 20 years ago and there was crystals every place. We filled 2 5gal buckets and still had to carry some clusters. After reading the reviews I am concerned about what it is like now. We are planning on going back Sept. 22nd with some friends. They were bringing up new piles dumping them several times a day when we were there. It sounds like the crystals are not plentiful like they were 20 years ago. Some reviews said they dug for hours and didn't find anything. And some reviews said they didn't bring up new piles to dig thru and some said the piles were 4 days old. I would really like to know the truth before we drive from Indiana to Ark. to dig crystals at Ron Colemans.

Hello, we do try to bring up fresh dirt at LEAST every other week day (usually Mon, Wed, Friday), however sometimes we are unable to, whether it be from weather, equipment malfunctions, a plentiful crystal pocket that keeps us busy, etc. As we tell many people, it's a lot like fishing. Some days you go home with buckets, some days you aren't as lucky. I can garuntee we are an active mine, and we do garuntee the digging fees.
All that being said, sometimes we are able to bring fresh dirt everyday of the week.
I know this isn't necessarily the answer you may have been hoping for, but we want to be honest with all our customers.

My family has gone to Hot Springs every year for crystal hunting, but have always gone to the Jim Coleman mines. We were thinking of spending one day at the Ron Coleman mines. We usually drive directly to the site so we can start early. How early can we start and what are the best directions to get directly to the site?
