What people are saying
Sadly, a rubbish strewn island with poor facilities.
Aug 2019
If you google 'Quan Lan tourism' you will get the authorities describing an idyllic island with beautiful, pristine beaches. Unfortunately this is NOT the situation. The Vietnamese authorities want to promote tourism to this island but the reality is that the island is covered in rubbish. There is no system in place for the management and disposal of rubbish. The result is a filthy dirty island. At Minh Chau beach the entrance to the beach is appalling, with rubbish stacked up everywhere. There are no bins and no waste collection. On the beach jet skis weave in and out of the swimmers. I imagine the authorities are trying to make this the next destination to spread the holiday trade out from Halong Bay. In addition, whilst there are plenty of hotels, the staff are not trained in how to run them, so they are low quality. Restaurants and bars are also very poor. In August, when we were there, it was very difficult to buy anything other than beer and water. The food available was very poor. Don't believe the publicity, translate and read all the reviews and believe them! If you want to go there you can take a bus to Cai Rong or Halong City and then get the very efficient and cheap ferry service. Alternatively, we took a limousine bus, for USD 12 per person, from Hanoi to the pier at Cai Rong. Tickets for the 1.30 ferry were 150,000 VND per person. The journey was about 45mins to Minh Chau port. It was a 5 minute ride in electric vehicle to the hotel. 20,000 VND per person. On our escape we went to Quan Lan port and it was 200,000 VND to Hon Gai the port for Halong City on the 7am ferry. We booked for 4 nights expecting to be on a decent beach with facilities to eat and drink. However, we left after 1 day as it was so terrible. We have backpacked a lot in Asia and don't expect paradise. Just a beach and a reasonable place to live. We knew we were off the beaten track, which was why we went there, but there is very little good to say about Quan Lan. I would expect there are so many, much better places. There is a lot of building on QL, but until they get the environment and services sorted out, it is a terrible tourist destination. This is very sad for the locals just trying to make a living. There is a lot of work to be done to make this a nice place to be and the local leaders will need to really clean up the island. The use of electric buggies around the island is a great start, but there is a long way to go. Maybe in 5 years time this will be a good place to visit? For now do better research than we did and go somewhere else!

Minh Chau Beach
Sep 2018 • Couples
Minh Chau Beach is one of top destinations in Quan Lan Island, Minh Chau Commune, Van Don District, Quang Ninh Province. Being considered the most pristine and beautiful beach in Northern Vietnam, Minh Chau Beach is ideal spot for beach travel enthusiasts. Thousands flock here every year to enjoy their honeymoon and to capture truly amazing wedding photos. The unique feature is the pristine white non-sticky sand that gives a comfortable sensation walking on. The beauty of the beach resembles the famous Snow White. We loved this place very much and we will come back soon.

The beach here is very beautiful and warm to swim and relax. We had a great time here with my partner because we're the only one at beach. Thanks Indochine Junk for a great cruise to get off the beaten tracks like no Other

Quan Lan Island to Minh Chau Village
May 2017 • Solo
If yo are looking for a bit of isolation and Vietnamese culture, Quan Lan might be for you..

Minh chau village might night have all the reviews and information about it but I will post a few photos that might change that!!!
The island itself is a great spot to get away for a few days to relax at the beach or ride around the island.. you can have a coffee or a beer with the locals if you choose though English is not spoken by all..
Hotels and Homestays are available on the island..
A great place to stop if you are on a junk boat cruising Bai-Tu long bay..
The summer months may be a little busy as it seems to be a popular place with the Vietnamese for their holidays..
Take enough cash with you as you won't find a bank in the village.

Amazing island for those who like to see something else
Sep 2017 • Solo
I just spent 20 days on Quan Lan island and more precisely on the North side: Minh Chau village. I would like to let you know that there is several possibilities of accommodation and restaurants (in the village or at the beach) in Minh Chau, many more than what we can read in different travel books or websites. You can also found a few very small "markets" or rent motorbikes.
Regarding what the locals told me, the place is full of Vietnamese tourists during Mai, June and July, but after that, it's just an amazing place to stay: very quiet, nice weather, amazing beaches (some very wild ones) and nothing else to do than enjoying a relaxing time. I will go back there for sure.
Just be carefull, no ATM on the island, take enough cash!

Hotels:

The Minh Chau Resort (booking.com):
didn't stayed there because it was a bit above my budget but had coffee or dinner often. The owner speaks very well English (as some of the staff) and is a very kind person. The terrace is a very quite place to have dinner, with trees and flowers and a swimming pool. The service is perfect and the food excellent.

Viet Hung Hotel:
I spent 3 weeks in the second one (Viet Hung). I paid 200'000 dongs per night (was there during the second part of August). At that period, it was the cheapest one I found.
The owner and his family are very friendly (even if they don't speak English) and welcoming, the rooms are very clean and have 2 double beds, a bathroom (with towels), air conditioning and a fan. I was invited for dinner or tea with the family several time.

Kai Mai:
Very nice hotel in front of Viet Hung hotel. I don't know for the quality of the room, but they proposed 300'000 dongs per night.
The restaurant of the hotel and their restaurant on the beach are very nice and the food is really good, too

Ideal place for hideaway
May 2017 • Couples
If you loves active beaches of Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Vung Tau..., you might feel so bored here. But with me, It's the greatest beach i 've set my foot to.
It tooks more than 1 hours from Van Don port to reach here in small speed boat.
I visited this place twice and stayed in local hostels.

Nice quiet place, near the beach, fresh seafood with reasonable price. Not so much activities here at night except fresh coconut juice and karaoke on the beach.
During day time, you can try Robinson beach - other private seperated from Minh Chau beach.

Would I come back? Yes, for escaping from crowded city.

It was ok beach
Oct 2016 • Couples
We biked from Quan Lan to Minh Chau beach. Took us a little bit more than an hour.
The beach was quiet, no one there. I like the quiet part but the water is not as clean and clear as I expected.
It was slow season when we were there.

Very nice resort,150 m from beautiful beach. Big rooms and nice swimmingpool in garden with many
chairs to relax. When we were there we were the only foreigners.
The people of the staff are extremely helpful and the food is good. When you like to go from the touristic pathways , an excellent place to stay.
