A very special garden on Ile de Batz, Bretagne. This historic garden has been restored and today is well cared for. The story of George Delaselle and the establishment of his garden is fascinating.
Plants are identified and a brochure in either French or English are helpful. We are New Zealanders and there are some obvious links with this garden established in 1897 .
This is a real treasure and we encourage others to take time to visit and enjoy this well laid out garden

Money well spent. The garden is about a 20 - 30 minute walk away (depending on your pace) from the ferry located at the southeast end of the island. This is not a huge garden. It is well designed and well presented, with themed areas representing several parts of the world. Therefore each area is unique and has its own charm. Although there is access to the garden for wheelchair users, this is limited but I think still enjoyable. Lots of shady areas and seating to rest a while and enjoy the surroundings. Lovely looking restaurant at the entrance with great outdoor seating, but I cannot comment on food/drink as not used.

After a pleasant morning shopping in Roscoff we decided to take the ferry over to the Ile de Batz - we had no idea what to expect but on arrival there are a number of signposts to the islands attractions.
We chose the Jardin Georges deleSelle -which was about a 20 minute walk from the
mooring point.
Older people or those with walking difficulties might find the walk prohibitive.
On arriving at the gardens there is an entrance fee of about 8euro and there are toilets in the reception area.
Georges Delaselle created this enchanting botanical garden but after he died it was sold several times until falling into a state of neglect and being abandoned.
In 1987 a united voluntary team from the association The Friends of the Garden Georges Delaselle decided to restore this mini paradise .
The rebuilding of the garden stays loyal to the ideas outlined by its originator, and the romantic perception of Georges Delaselle is still evident in this picturesque site.

You can get to Roscoff from St. Malo in time to get the 11:30 ferry to Ile-de-Batz (even if you have trouble with the parking, as we did). Once on the island you will feel as if you are in southern France, or Italy, or Greece - very Mediterranean plants and scenery. The 20 minute walk to the gardens is super pleasant. Just outside the gardens there's a little outdoor restaurant serving basic delicious items like Croque Monsieur, salads, and ice cream (and, um, beer!). We had a light lunch and set off for the gardens. To us it seemed like Valentia Island, near Waterville in Ireland, another subtropical garden. This one isn't as big, or quite as well maintained, but it definitely makes for a wonderful day. You start asking yourself - how about a vacation just here? Don't miss it!

This garden has been revived by volunteers from a neglected state since 1987. I has several planting "zones" that loosely tour the planet. Some areas are open lawns edged by exotic and giant grasses. Another is a "palm grove" more resembling a denser "jungle" style of planting.

There are several places to simply sit and relax too. There being very well framed views across to Roscoff and the channel to the mainland.

Allow yourself a couple of hours at least to enjoy this place fully.

On the Ile de Batz is a large peaceful garden which many interesting trees and plants. Lots of places to sit and contemplate and get some shade. Well worth the charge at the gate.

A visit to this garden had been recommended, but we were totally blown away by the sheer beauty and diversity of this garden. Every way you turned there was another wow factor.

So glad that we made the effort to visit these gardens, which are quite unlike any other I have been to. I could happily have spent a whole day just wandering about or stopping at intervals to sit on a bench and admire the different areas of planting.

A small tropical style garden, about a 20 minute walk from the ferry terminal. The charge is €5 to visit, and has some rare plants.
