An ancient volcano that formed the island, being its culmination. No ticket or guide is required to climb. The trail begins across the street from the old place where sheep wool was taken. It is an easy track, with a small rise that takes around 1:30h to get to the top. In total, return and return are around 11km. There is not much signage, but it is relatively followed by the marked road. From above there is a 360 view with the ocean in the whole circle.

We talked all the way from the village and return, approximately 25 km. We started in the village and walked along the sea passing the Ahu Thai statues and some caves, before turning towards the hill on a gravel road. There is also nice ahu/statues were the trail starts (Ahu Akivi?) and you could actually go from here on horseback. The view from the top is nice.

It was a great place to visit and to see practically the entire island from the top. it would have been more enjoyable without the horses that were a bit too competitive and the English-style saddles just about did everyone in. beautiful place though.

The highest point on the island, not as crowded since you can only hike up or go by horse.
I made it round trip in 2 hours and 10 minutes.
No lagoon on top.
Make sure at the sign about 40 minutes into the hike you go left if you stay right you go to Rano Aroi.
You can see Rano Kau in the distance.
You'll know you are there when you see the stick hut with Terevaka on it.
Check out my pictures to see what the sign looks like.
If you don't have much time on the island you can pass this ip.

Probably the best way to get to the highest point of Easter island is by horse back. Did a great hire riding tour over half a day up the slopes of the mountain and explored the landscape.

While it is said to be the highest point on the island, the walk up is not steep at all. It is a gradual uphill climb that takes about 3 hours total round trip (not counting time to get to this place from town). The starting point is next to Ahu Akivi so if you plan to go there do both the same day if possible. We had already done two days of visits to the usual and wonderful sites on the island so wanted to just take a nice walk which this was. However, we did not find the views to be anything special. If we had known, we would have chosen to walk along the shore at some point which we would have found to be more beautiful. We saw few people doing this hike - some on horses. If you have a way to get to this place, a guide is not really needed as there is nothing to be explained.

Get a 360Âş view of the island! Is a very nice hike, it takes 3hrs to go there and come back. Just drive to Ahu Akivi, park your car and take the path to Tere Vaka! It is worth it!

The view of Easter Island from the top is amazing, 360, all 3 corners of the triangular shaped island. It is the highest volcanic peak with stellar views of the surrounding terrain. Takes about 90 minutes to reach the top. Hat, sunscreen, good shoes.

We chose to walk because we heard the horses made you sore. Make sure you get the right entrance, not clearly marked next to Akivi. The views are relaxing and spectacular. Ideally you should go when it's not cloudy but this is hard in this part of the island. It's worth going in any case. Lots of wild horses.

This is a three hour round trip if you take your time for photos and to explore a bit. Quicker if you just go up and back. I started from Akivi and walked up, having arrived to this trailhead by bike from Hanga Roa. If you like biking, this is a great experience. Most people arrive to the trailhead by car.
The views along the way are great, the only way really to see the majority of the island. There are pastures and horses along the way. The crater near the summit is amazing, but I thought it was worthwhile to go the extra 15 minutes to the summer to get better views of the eastern part of the island. Overall, this is a fantastic way to slow down, get away from the crowds and get a closer impression of the island.
