I went for two days at La Porteña de Areco to relax after several weeks of road trip and upon the recommendation of friends.

I discovered a historical estancia located in a wonderful park surrounded by many horses and taken care of with love by Gonzalo and Catalina.

They will take the best care of you and give you a glimpse of what best Argentina has to offer.

Make sure you stop there if you go to San Antonio de Areco.
And make sure you stop there even if you don't.

My wife and I visited this Estancia for a day as part of our tour itinerary in Buenos Aires. Prior to arriving at the Estancia, we visited the Gaucho Museum in San Antonio de Areco, named after the great Argentinian author, Ricardo Güiraldes, who actually lived at Estancia La Portena where he wrote his famous his novel Don Segundo Sombra.

Our day at the Estancia was one of our best experiences in Buenos Aires. When we arrived, we were welcomed by the owners, Gonzalo and his charming wife, Francesca, who entertained us to drinks and snacks. We were then shown around Ricardo Güiraldes's house which has been maintained in its original state. The rest of the day was spent horse riding and being treated to a delicious (and never ending) parilla lunch prepared by the gauchos. Fantastic!

After lunch, we were treated to traditional gaucho songs performed by two gauchos with wonderful harmonies and great musicianship. We then watched a display of the gauchos at work and play demonstrating their wide range of skills so expertly. It was wonderful experience being with the gauchos. After a further round of horse riding around the Estancia, we were treated to tea and a wide range of cakes and local pastries which were just as delicious as lunch.

The owners were aware that it was my birthday and they raised a toast in my honour. I'd like to think that all our wonderful activities during the day were prepared just for me, but I guess the reality is that this is just part of their normal hospitality.

We found everyone at the Estancia so friendly, charming and entertaining and would definitely recommend Estancia La Portena de Areco as a must-visit attraction.

This is the perfect place to experience an estancia just outside BA. The hosts are very friendly, the food was "perfect" and the gauchos added the cool factor to the place. Really a wonderful day just relaxing and enjoying meeting people from many different countries.

We went to an estancia (a cattle ranch) where we went on a horse ride. After the ride we were treated to an Argentinian BBQ. Argentina is well known for its steaks. We had different types of steak cuts and ribs, the meat was world class. The Gaucho was playing his guitar whilst we were eating. The restaurant was quiet and we got great individual service. The men drank Gancia (citrus and herb flavored liquor). I loved the Gaucho experience, it is a day I will never forget.

The young couple who run the Estancia will make you feel like family, opening their home, farm, and hearts to visitors. If you like to ride, you can (with the gauchos on the farm). If you like good wine, it will await you. If you enjoy good food (and lots of it), you'll find it at Estancia La Portena.
We made a day of it: rode horses, toured the farm, met interesting people, watched and listened to the working gauchos on the farm, and seemed to never stop eating good, home-cooked and often home-grown food.

I wanted to spend the day on an estancia, see some gauchos, do some horse riding and yes I did! The people were very friendly, relaxed and helpful. The horse riding was 20 minutes, which was perfect for me as a beginner and in the fierce heat (although I'm sure you could pay for more time). Brunch and late lunch were included and delicious then the gauchos sang and showed us how to dance their typical moves. The last thing was a very impressive demonstration by a horse whisperer. During the day there was a bit of down time to wander the beautiful grounds and lie beneath the trees. Perfect.

We went to the estancia for un dia del campo (a day in the countryside) - we had wanted to stay for a couple of nights but they were fully booked - it was incredible! The most beautiful, relaxing grounds, loads of friendly cats and dogs, delicious asado lunch, and to top it off fantastic horseriding with a gaucho. They allow their guests to take the day exactly as they want to - slow and relaxed or as much horseriding as you can fit in! I didn't see the accommodation but I'd be back here in a heartbeat to stay! One day I will be back! Absolute highlight of our time in Argentina.

I wanted to do some riding and see La Pampa and the sorroundings of Buenos Aires and for me Estancia La Porteña was the perfect place to do this. I went two times, first with my family and then again with my boyfriend and we had a great time. You can go riding no matter your experience and the horses are very good and you can choose to go for a shorter ride or also go further onto the pampa sorounding the estancia which i highly recommend, we were away for about 2 hours. There was a huge asado and the Tea had loads of options of sweets to choose from. And the best part of the estancia is the history and that you actually comes to one of the most tradicional and oldest estancias in Argentina! I highly recommend it.

This is a phantastic place to escape from Buenos Aires. We spent one day at the estancia and enjoyed the area, the many attractive activities, excellent food and extraordinary charming staff.
Should we go to Buenos Aires again, we certainly would visit the estancia again!
We can highly recommend this place!

Great day in the country! Our driver, Santiago, was wonderful! Great information on the little town. We got to do a little shopping before heading out to the ranch. After walking the property, we had a wonderful BBQ, then we were serenaded by gauchos (father & sons). We ended our afternoon with a horseback ride! Perfect day!
