The Miradores Los Condores path is a 45 minute walk up the hill next to the visitor center. It's a nice warm up for the bigger walks you'll be doing the next days, and has some excellent views of El Chalten and the surrounding mountains.

This is an easy way to stretch your legs after a bus ride from El Calafate. If you can see the peaks from town, you'll get a nice wide view from the hilltop after, say, half an hour uphill walk (I am 72...) from the info center.

Our final morning in El Chalten, hubby and I hiked this trail and were wowed by the number of condors soaring overhead. The skies were blue, the mountains were stunning, and the 5 condors swooping overhead made this short 3 mile RT hike memorable.

We are 70 and fit, enjoy scenic easy-to-moderate hikes, and chose this one among the wide variety of hikes available in the El Chalten area. Coupled with winds that occasionally forced us to fight for our balance, we found this hike to be a bit more demanding than advertised, yet do-able as we allowed ourselves 2-3 breaks to catch our breath ad admire the vistas.

This trail is very heavily traveled because of its lower difficulty, its short length and the fact that it begins right at the El Chalten tourist information center. So expect lots of company on the trail and at the summit overlook. Also expect high winds. Winds are a fact of life in El Chalten as well as on its surrounding trails. They were a factor all of the way up and especially at the exposed summit.

We were pooped once e reached the top and wisely found a location on the leeward side of the rock summit where we could sit sheltered from the winds and enjoy a bite to eat and some drink. Our spot offered us solitude from the crowds as well as the winds, so we spent quite a while enjoying the view. I wish I could provide directions but that is impossible except to say it is just a few feet down from the top on the side away from the town. We could not see El Chalten from where we sat, but the beautiful peaks were just to our right of where we sat and clearly visible, making to whole hike very worthwhile.

This is a short walk from El Chalten and a good thing to do if you arrive in the afternoon and don’t have time for one of the big hikes. It’s pretty easy, with nice views back ove El Chalten

This trail leads out from the town past the visitors' centre and would be easy to overlook - but it provides outstanding views and a satisfying shorter walk compared to the main longer trails. We saw lots of condors circling around and had fine views of the mountains.

You don't need to be an expert hiker to enjoy the surroundings of El Chalten. Of course some trails are practiced only by hardcore trekkers because of their difficulties but these two are really easy. That doesn't mean you won't sweat, gotta count on some slopes and the strong wind in some places, but in the end you'll enjoy fantastic scenery on the Fitz Roy and the village of El Chalten (from los condores mirador), or on lago Viedma and the plain (from las aguilas).
