El Chalten Base Camp Hike

My wife and I did the base camp trek in November 2019 with Cesar as our guide and it was absolutely brilliant. According to another guide we encountered along the way Cesar was the best mountaineering guide in the whole of South America and I'd be inclined to agree with him. He was extremely knowledgeable about the area and had a lot of interesting and fun stories about Patagonia and other parts of Argentina. He was also very skilled on the track and when we left the main track to find an alternative route over a pass we both felt very safe having him leading us.

Merlin was also great organising Cesar as our guide, especially as it was at such short notice and also modifying the route so that we would arrive at windy pass in clear weather to get a good view of the ice fields and this worked out brilliantly as we had perfect clear skies and could see for miles across the ice fields.

Some might think the trek was on the expensive side, but these guys are a really professional outfit and the quality of the product was matched by the price. If we ever get back to El Chalten we'd almost certainly be getting in touch with Merlin again to organise another trip.

Cerro Eléctrico climb

Merlin guided us on a daylong climb of Cerro Eléctrico. It was a blast. Merlin was a great guide, extremely knowledgeable about the mountain and the area, getting us up and down efficiently and safely all while we were having a lot of fun. He also provided us with most of the equipment we needed (we arrived in El Chaltén with no climbing gear as we are cyclists), which was a big relief as renting everything would have added to the hassle.

On top of that we had amazing weather and were alone on the mountain for incredible views!

Thanks very much Merlin for the great day out, and to anyone looking for a guide in the mountains around El Chaltén, go to Mountaineering Patagonia!

Backpacking in El Chalten!

My three friends and I had an incredible experience with Mountaineering Patagonia. We did the Huemul Trek with our guides, Diego and Leo. Even though we had to come back a day early due to weather, we did the Fitz Roy hike instead and had a great time. Three of the four of us were novice backpackers, and Leo and Diego’s guidance allowed us to enjoy the trek and complete it successfully. Leo was extremely accommodating, always checking to make sure he was going at a good pace and making sure to stop for water breaks when we were huffing and puffing up a steep hill. We always felt safe on the trek thanks to Leo and Diego’s expertise, and we loved the excellent food they brought and the never-ending supply of tea! They were also great company on the trek – we all had a lot of fun joking around and taking pictures with the breathtaking scenery. The whole experience was definitely the adventure my friends and I were looking for! I would highly recommend Mountaineering Patagonia and Leo and Diego to anyone looking to trek in El Chalten.

Everything and Nothing I Expected!

What an incredible experience!! My boyfriend and I did the 5 day Mt Fitz Roy basecamp trek. Our guide was Luis and we couldn't be happier with our entire trip. We had direct communication with the owner Merlin throughout the booking process up until our arrival. He was very accommodating to my food allergens and had everything and more for the 5 day trek. Luis was an exceptional guy! He was so knowledgeable about literally everything Patagonia and he made our trip even better than what we thought. The views, the food, the people. Would do this again 10/10! Were already planning our next trip back.

The BEST trek!

We did the 5 day trek/camp through El Chalten. One of the most amazing experiences of my life. Merlin was so helpful and incredible at sufficing details such as making sure my girlfriend had her gluten free meals ready for the trek. Our guide Luis...no words for how amazing he how knowledgeable he was about El Chalten. This was a physically demanding trek and Luis knew by the minute how the terrain would change. The food on the trek was amazing as well. You had to carry it but Merlin really had the best meals packed for us for each day and Luis made sure the meals were prepared at all of our stops. Epic views, epic people, epic trekking company! Definitely go with Merlin’s trekking company for safety, comfort, and wonderful time. Highly recommend!

Mojon Rojo ascent

We have just completed the two day round trip ascent of the mojon rojo with Merlin. A fantastic summit with a fantastic guide. His expertise in planning, weather forecasting and experience provided us with the perfect challenge and we are so grateful. The “mountain gastronomy’” was second to none where all small things made it haute cuisine (fresh cream, gourmet chocolate and beer!)

We highly recommend Merlin as a guide - the best in town. we will be back to climb with Merlin at some point in the future

Cerro Electrico ascent

Excellent trip with Merlin. I had actually booked a 2 day climb of Mojon Rojo but the weather forecast dictated that we move the trip so I only had 1 day. Merlin suggested we could do Cerro Electrico in 1 day and what a great suggestion that was. Very early start in the dark but the day dawned bright and blue. Cerro Electrico is a long day but easily achievable by anyone who has some snow experience. The views at the top were some of the most magnificent I have seen. You feel like you could reach out and touch Cerro Fitzroy! Merlin was fantastic fun throughout and I felt very safe. I would definitely book with Merlin again if I ever get to come back to El Chalten.

Our experience with Merlin and his company Mountaineering Patagonia was one that we will remember with extreme appreciation. We are super grateful for all the attention, and we recommend him and his company for any climbing expedition in Patagonia. We will definitely be coming back soon!!

Amazing Mojon Rojo Trek!

Mountaineering Patagonia is the number one thing to do in El Chalten! My wife and I went on the two day Mojon Rojo trek with Merlin and had a wonderful experience. Merlin was so professional and helpful. He had all of the gear that we needed and came over to our house to make sure our clothing, bags, and shoes were sufficient for the hike. My wife some extra requirements on the trek and Merlin was able to accommodate and adjust our trip perfectly! The hike itself was amazing! The views from camp were stunning and view from the top of Mojon Rojo was breathtaking. I would highly recommend Mojon Rojo if you are newish to mountaineering. We will definitely use Mountaineering Patagonia on future trips to El Chalten.

Cerro Madsen ascent

We felt like we were in good hands with Mountaineering Patagonia in El Chalten. The ascent was a good challenge and Jimi was a strong guide. The approach to Cerro Madsen was a long hike up to Laguna de Los Tres and then mountaineering for final ascent of Madsen and a beautiful view of Fitz Roy. Great adventure that added to our wonderful experience in Patagonia. Thank you so much Merlin, Jimi, and team!

FYI - if you need rental mountaineering boots, make sure to contact them ahead of time to set up rentals. I forgot to, and it almost put us in a pinch. A 30+ L bag was useful as you do have to carry your gear (ice axe, helmet, crampons, food, water, and clothing layers)
