Spectacular

You can get a bus from El Charlten to the lake, the road is unpaved but fine. then you can get a boat to the start of this shortish walk. There are 3 trails (red, yellow and green) you want to take the red trail to the top. The trails are well marked and you won't get lost. This will lead you up to the lake before the glacier.
There are probably tours that do this as the land is privately owned or Las Lengas do a bus service down to the lake. I suspect a tour would be the best way as it would tie in the boat ride you need to do. Well worth it in my opinion.

Tourist trap - don’t go
Feb 2019 • Friends
The trail to glaciar is far from El Chaltén (37 km in ripio road). The last 13 km is an experience on the lunar surface. Craters, holes and bumps.
They want to sell the entrance ticket, so they lie saying that the trail is “muy suave”, which means “very smooth”. It is a median level trail with no rewarding view. What you see after finishing the trail is almost the same as what you can see before. Don’t waste your time and money in such a wonderful place like El Chaltén.

Cute and Tranquil family hike
Jan 2019 • Family
This was our favorite hike on the trip with our young children. It's about an hour drive north of El Chalten, but well worth it because you lose the crowds. It was much less windy (until the summit) and way less people on the trail. Super doable with a 4 and 1 year old and a great hike and view at the top.

The hike is strenuous but doable. It’s a long way up but in the end the view is breathtaking and worth every step

Lovely afternoon spent here!

My friends and I couldn't hike Fitz Roy due to bad weather, so it was recommended we drive up to Lago del Desierto. When we got there, we paid a small fee to hike 2-3 km trail to the glacier. It was such a nice trail!
Very well-maintained and easy to follow, you start off in a gorgeous wooded area with a beautiful stream cutting through. Towards to the summit of the hike, it got steeper, but there were several cascada view points. Seeing the glacier itself was spectacular. It's a hanging glacier with a lake right underneath it. An amazing, peaceful place to sit and take in the valley and all the beauty of Chalten and Patagonia.
The stand where we bought the tickets had some snacks and drinks, including beer. My friend had a broken foot so she only went on the first part of the hike, then headed down and got herself a beer and chatted with the workers. One guy told us about a small waterfall we should stop at on the way back to town, which turned out to be really pretty!

Nice and quick walk to the glacier
Mar 2018 • Couples
We took a half day trio to this small glacier, close to Lago del Desierto. Just 45 minutes walk uphill and you are in front of a small, superblue lagoon and the glacier.
Very good tour on a lazy day, and when the weather is not good for Fitz Roy.

Glaciar Huemul has an amazing view! Its gorgeous!
We paid 200 pesos each as entrance fee. The tracking is inside a forest. Very pretty and nice. Just close to the end the tracking gets harder, with more climb, but there are ropes to grab.
It took us 50 minuts to get to the top.
It was a rainy day, so we did not get the view with blue sky. But is wonderfull anyway.
By the entrance it has bathroons very weel maintained.

A Beautiful Hike, Stream, Lake And Glacier!
Nov 2017 • Couples
What's not to like!! After a 37 km plus (scenery) minus (slow going) drive on a gravel road, you can take a great hike up to Humeul Lake and Glaciar. The hike is a bit steep at times, but short and through beautiful woods with a rushing stream often right next to you. You pop over a ridge and see an aquamarine- and I mean aquamarine colored lake with a small glacier on the opposite bank. Nice sitting and places to eat lunch up from the lake. During the hike up you can visit three waterfalls/cataracts which are very nice. You do have to pay an entrance fee and assume 2-3 hours depending on amount of pictures and pace. Very nice bathrooms at the starting area.
