About
Climbing haphazardly up the steep slopes at the back of the High Street, the paths and alleys of old Barmouth reveal many quaint and delightful corners. Houses seem to be built almost on top of one another in this fascinating jumble of steps and terraces.

In June the alleyways & walkways were filled with lovely flowers of many types. The old part is lovely & quaint but there are many steps up to the top. I would recommend purchasing the Heritage Trail leaflet £1 available from the tourist information centre located in the Station Booking office open 9am - 5pm. The trail covers the old town & more.

I was directed here by a local who said that I would probably get a pain in the neck because, to appreciate the area, you have to keep looking up. That is very true because you have to look above ground level to appreciate the buildings and, in some cases, their totally different colours from the buildings surrounding them. You also have to look round corners, to find hidden little alleys. Walking round, there is so much to admire.

Walking around Barmouth, walked the back streets away from the tourist drag to explore more of the town that we hadn't seen before.
Nice well preserved Welsh coastal town, with traditional stone cottages.
Well worth taking the time to explore the back ways of the town - though please be aware some of the signposts are out of date so you may need to double back on yourselves - but still a nice walk.

Enjoyable seaside town. However if you wish to use one of the ferries across the bay I would advise against using "Emily's Ferry". We had a similar experience as a previous reviewer - although we were first in the queue and had been waiting for 5-10 mins the owner decided to take all six of another party across and that only 2 of the 3 of us could come on this trip i.e. which one of you is staying behind! We decided not to travel on his boat. He did not even apologise or try to make amends. He clearly thought he would rather lose our business than the party of six. Truly unpleasant human being.

Me and my mom went to the Fairbourne harbour to get a ferry to Barmouth, and so we waited and in front of us was a group of 3 and group of 2. When Emily’s ferries showed up me and my mom and the too groups in front of us went to get on the ferry, however the group of the was let on then the man asked us how many in each group so we said too and so did the others in front of, so the man proceed to ask for a group of 5 or 3 to ‘fill up the boat’ so a group of 5 who only just got there on the boat!! Then proceeding too tell the 4 of us to ‘make sure we are the front of the queue to ensure we get a seat!! How ridiculous. Then to make matters worse when we did get a ferry across to Barmouth we passed Emily’s ferry which then only contained 3 people!!!! It’s also expensive as you have to pay for you dog. So in conclusion, give ivy lou your time and not Emily. :))

I managed to located some rather steep steps located towards the end of the High Street in Barmouth and had a quick look at the old town, which reminded me a little of Clovelly and Polperro.
There are some lovely little properties, many seeming to have little alleyways leading towards them.
A very charming part of an attractive seaside town with views out to Barmouth Bridge.

Yes far too harsh.
Go out of season and you'll have a completely different experience. Been here many a time over the last 5 years and it never loses its charm for me.
The only things I do not like are the fairground and factory warehouse shop which make the area look a bit tatty and run down.
If you let this place into your heart, it will stay there forever. Sunsets to die for and a feeling of escape every time. A must for everyone trying to get away from bad memories and people!!

Some narrow path when you’ve got little ones, but what a pretty little village and beautiful views across the estuary, some lovely old buildings- an architectural delight.

Full of narrow lanes and enchanting alleyways criss-crossing up a steep bank, leading to the first ever national trust land and magnificant views out to sea, the spit at Fairbourne, and the Mawddach Estuary. Cute cottages, lovely gardens, another world... Definitely worth an explore!
