About
Winner of the Channel 4 Restoration of the Year, this site features 900 years of history including medieval castle walls and a Georgian house restored to its original glory. You can also stay in this great place with a mixture of serviced and self catering accommodation, 4* and 5* respectively. Our 1176 café and restaurant serves great lunches in a modern cantilevered building overlooking the river.

An enjoyable visit
Oct 2021 • Family
Visted as a family, we really enjoyed the visited, the children found it very interesting and informative. The kitchen garden has vegetables growing there is a play area for children, the house has lots on display and it very informative.
Outside yoy get a good view, I would say it's a castle but it's the remains. Cafe on site is delicious.

Worth a visit if you're interested in the Eisteddfod
Oct 2021
We spent an afternoon at the castle and grounds 2 weeks ago after reading about the gardens. It's a small venue in the town, consisting of some remaining parts of the original castle, a villa, gardens, a cafe, a museum and amenities.

The history of the castle and villa is interesting, with many of the exhibits in the villa relating to the national eisteddfod. The buildings have been beautifully restored and you can wander around the villa itself in less than 2 hours. There are stairs to the 2nd floor, or a lift and covid measures were appropriately in place. It's interactive for children, and there are cameras into the cellar to watch for bat activity.

The castle grounds are dog friendly, as you walk through the kitchen garden, down to the old stable block and around the ramparts. There are lovely flowers beds, some seating areas, climbing roses, and a large lawn, with a few sculptures and whale bone arch.

The cafe offered drinks and seasonal light bites including cakes and soup, and the staff while being very busy were attentive and very welcoming. We used the parking in the town car park which is a 5 minute walk up to the castle along the high street.

Keep it a secret

We have just spent three nights staying at Cardigan Castle .We stayed in the Stable Room ( Y Stablau)
The reception is situated within the Castle visitors centre, our reception was warm friendly and efficient with all the details we required to find the car parking area and the Y Stablau
The Y Stablau has its own private parking spot
The room itself is impressively large with sleeping for four people , it also has four comfortable chairs The accommodation has a small and useful kitchenette
The walk through the Castle grounds to the Restaurant for breakfast is a delight
The breakfast ( we tried the Welsh breakfast and the Continental breakfast ) both of which were excellent and filling
The Restaurant staff were friendly and efficient
Overall it’s was a great experience

I was reluctant to write this review in case more people find out about thus superb location and I may not be able to book it again

Informative, but not a castle
Sep 2021
It's great that the site has been restored and is in community ownership. But there's little remaining of the castle apart from the walls. It's more of a visit to a large Georgian house.

Small but Well Done
Sep 2021
Lovely position in centre of toen. Restoration excellent and wthe tale is worth telling. Not a great deal to see inside the villa but good gard end and short walks including a good playground. Café very well situated for excellent views. Very limited menu and short hours. Parking on street and nearby. Lift in villa. No signposts so quite difficult to find though in a prominent position near estuary

An OK visit
Aug 2021
There are lots of castles in Wales that you do get a bit spoilt! Cardigan Castle has a lot of its walls buried, and what remains is quite small. It's still interesting and pleasant enough, but there's not a load to see here.

A family ticket was £15, which is so-so.

Interesting site
Jul 2021
My husband and I visited on a rather drizzly day during our holiday in Cardigan. We really enjoyed our visit and found the information about the history of the castle really interesting. There was a good balance (in our opinion) between enough information to be interesting without feeling overwhelmed by an excess of detail! A good variety of ways that the information was presented as well - video, text, images, models etc.
The restaurant on site was good too!

Disappointed
Aug 2021 • Friends
We were wanting around a wet cardigan and wanted to find somewhere to get a nice cup of coffee.

Had heard good things about the cafe at the castle so decided at 11.45 to nip in.

Couldn’t believe it when we were told they were only seating for meals.

Looked around and only 2 tables were being used?

I find it hard to believe that they couldn’t find a table for us for a coffee?

Pathetic really when they have been closed through lockdown and had the seated us we may well have decided to eat once settled?

Not much to see
Jul 2021 • Couples
Pleasant enough visit but a little disappointing.Very little historic evidence left inside the outer walls apart from a large house containing some local artefacts to see. Videos help with the story. Much aťtenton on the restoration process and the last owner and not enough on previous centuries.

Wonderfully restored castle - well worth a visit.
Jun 2021 • Couples
Wonderful refurbishment of this historic and important Welsh castle and ancient Manor House. We learnt that Cardigan was home to the first Eisteddfordd from the excellent explanatory video. The whole place is very fresh and well presented. The grounds are a particular delight. After a good look around we enjoyed sitting in the sun with some excellent coffees from the cafe / restaurant. The entry fee was surprisingly cheap compared with a National Trust or CADW property. We highly recommend a visit.
