- allthingsitalyCounty Durham, United Kingdom783 contributionsWe visited Galloway House Gardens during our stay nearby. Parking is £2.50 for an hour or £5.50 ‘all day’ which is very reasonable since it gives you access to a large garden and woodland walks. These are worth the visit and the fact you can then access the privately owned Rigg Bay is a nice bonus - our dog certainly thought so! It’s all very informal, no toilets or coffee shops etc so you simply wander around as you wish, which suited us fine. A very enjoyable way to spend an hour or two.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 25, 2024
- Alison S9 contributionsWe visited this amazing arboretum ( with the infamous handkerchief tree!) last week whilst we were on holiday in the area. What a find! The gardens were incredible with very helpful gardeners. The gardens backed on to a fabulous beach with lovely walks. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit ( with our dog) and would recommend a visit there if you are in the areaVisited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 20, 2024
- Mrs C M1 contributionOn a cool, breezy day we enjoyed rambling along the woodland paths and along the shoreline at Rigg Bay. It was lovely: not formal, but natural and gentle. A bit muddy in parts, but nothing good boots or wellies couldn't cope with. The beach was huge and empty! Great for dogs (but take the poop, or flick it away into deep growth). Not great if you need loos, but it's an easy stroll on to Farlieston where there are public loos. Perfect for peaceful meandering.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 21, 2024

What a lovely place! Parking easy enough, noticed the group ahead of us found the pay machine too difficult to use and didn’t pay for their parking - we used it no issue. Weather wasn’t amazing, bit dull - but we still enjoyed a nice walk. Really liked walking and arriving at the beach - how beautiful! We will definitely come again, hopefully catching better weather!

We had a lovely walk through the gardens to the beach. Hardly anyone there, felt very private. Weather was beautiful and views amazing. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Would love to have been able to get a look inside the house.

Easy to use parking meter - it uses cash or card. The grounds are ok, it’s an arboretum, but neglected. The walled garden is now empty, unloved & uninteresting. In contrast, the shore/beach is stunning; I’d return and pay the day’s parking c. £5 & spend a day on the sand. Overall, it all feels neglected. No dog waste bins on the estate & despite signs asking owners pick up, bag & take home there are poops all over the place; some bagged, but left. What’s that about? People are awful.

Spent the whole morning in early August 2021 on this beach. It was very clean and the water was actually warm. Dog friendly also. Was surprised it was so clean given there was only one bin, which was really a rubbish tip. But all in all a good trip.

After a short walk through pretty gardens we found ourselves at the beach. Ideal for families. We picnicked on beach then took another walk around the good sized garden. Well worth a visit

I was last in these gardens sixty years ago, but that’s another story!
A wonderful place to walk in peace, with a beautiful beach thrown in - and a walled garden originally constructed by POWs from the Napoleonic Wars.

These are lovely gardens to wander around. Take a picnic and go through the gardens to the seashore, enjoying the peace and beauty of the sea. Instead of taking the car and paying to enter, you can walk from Garlieston, which is lovely.

Went here a couple of times whilst on holiday in Garlieston so could walk to the gardens. Right next to the coast, where it is possible to see a Mulberry harbour at very low tide (which they practiced on for the WW2 Normandy landing). The gardens are home to the rare handkerchief tree and other exotic plants due to the micro climate which is possible because of the Gulf Stream. It is free to walk around and usually quiet and you can discover many garden "rooms"
A Truly heavenly and peaceful place. It is sometimes possible to see grey seals on the beach near the garden.

We visit this part of Scotland frequently and love visiting these gardens and walking the coastal path to Cruggleton Catle and The Isle of Whithorn. The gardens are beautiful at any time of year and are a delight to wander - springtime is especially beautiful. Rigg Bay bordering the gardens is equally beautiful. Don't pass these beautiful informal woodland gardens - they are too good to miss.

Hi, is there any disabled access from the gardens to the beach ?
Written June 24, 2018
If you come out the car park and turn left there is a paved Riad that leads quite a way down to the beach, before turning into a rough shod riad and then a path. At the end of this there is a slightly steep rough path down to the beach that you might be able to get a wheelchair down with help. The beach is soft sand and a wheelchair might struggle in it.
