Unique Piece of Architecture.

At first sight it looked like a meeting house over a covered market but more interestingly it proved to be the former grammar school. Surprised how small it was but an insight into past and perhaps a lesson for today that it's what's taught rather than the size of a building that counts.

A little gem from the past
Feb 2020
This little building in the centre of the town does mark Market Harborough and is very well maintained.
Worth a visit if only to read the inscriptions.

Morning visit

I hope Market Harborough is proud of this historic building and it is not taken for granted, as it is a real gem in the town. Apparently ( and do not quote me ) it was the Victorians who first started to paint the infill of timber buildings white as in days of yore the colour was a light brown or muddy yellow.

Beautiful

Such a lovely building, and totally in character with the beautiful market town. The school house has been lovingly cared for over the years. It would be lovely if we could have a look inside too but we have to make do with the beauty of this historic landmark from the outside

Adds character to a pretty little town.

We are frequent visitors to Market Harborough and have often walked past this beautiful old ex grammar school which is reported to be over 400 years.
I have not seen anything quite like this one although the building in Thaxted in Essex is a tiny bit similar.
Market Harborough is a lovely little town with plenty of '' old stuff '' and bags of character.
We particularly enjoy walking the backstreets close to this building and looking at the many small independent shops that seem to be dotted around.
A lovely building with plenty of history.....but it does not look big enough to be a grammar school!!

You will need a long memory to remember this being built!

School, masters house, and still the focal point of the town centre.
Standing next to St. Dionysius Church, much older than even the Old Grammar School,
which dates from the early 1600’s, the Old Grammar School has been superbly maintained by a significant local charity, whose support is superb, aided and abetted by the skills of the local craftsmen employed by W W Brown,
Market Harborough has a welcoming character, places to eat, whatever your budget, and people who care both its history and its future. It’s worth your time to visit.

Historic

The timber portion of the Old Grammar School was built by Robert Smyth in 1614. The bricks were added in 1868 and the building was restored in 1978. It is open for special events. I snuck up and had a peek while a vegan tea event was going on. You had to prebook - I did not but still got to have a nice look about. It’s a nice building to see even if it is not open. It always amazes to me to see buildings that were built before the country I am from was even established. I love living here and experiencing all the history. ❤️❤️❤️

Such a beautiful town with lovely architecture, old style shops and cafés and of course the prettiest old grammar school I’ve ever seen! It was a pleasant walk and good opportunity for taking pictures!
