- Jared Geraghty1 contribution2 hour workshop for twoThis was simply excellent, and far exceeded my expectations! Katherine was a delight, always there to help, and her demonstrations were clear and easy to follow. We had a huge range of tools to use, and she was eager to help us with any ideas we had, something I was extremely grateful for. Her patience was unbelievable, and during the workshop she managed to both guide us where we needed it and encourage our creativity as we explored a medium we were both unfamiliar with. On top of being a fantastic teacher, Katherine also went above and beyond by discussing her own creative education, and telling us about the courses she took that inspired her to start ceramics. As a student, this was extremely useful, and I’m very thankful that she was so open and lovely. In the end, both of us created something we’re really proud of, and although neither of us were exactly “naturals,” I can tell that this experience will always be a special memory.Hi Jared, Thank you for taking the time to leave such a wonderful and detailed review, I greatly appreciate your time in doing so. I am over the moon that I was able to give you everything that you was looking for in the workshop. You did a wonderful job, not only were you both very enthusiastic and capable but you both explored your own direction and clearly took on board what you was shown and carried out everything very well. It was my pleasure to give you knowledge on getting into the arts through your education, I hope you found it useful and that it helps give you some areas to look in to; as I mentioned if you would like to ask anything else please do get in touch I'm more than happy to help. Best of luck with your ongoing illustrations and whatever else you start to explore! - Sandy B1 contributionGreat activity dayMy daughter bought me a 2h private session with Katherine Fortnum for Christmas. We had a great day with Katherine, who made us feel very safe (with all the Covid safety rules obeyed) and welcome. We made 2 pots between us, which took just over 3 hours, starting from a ball of clay through rolling out, shaping, decorating, adding the base, and painting. We were given a demonstration at the start, and one to one attention throughout to ensure we made the best pots possible. The room was very spacious, clean and tidy, and held a huge range of objects and methods for decorating the pots. We could chose a good range of colours for the painting, with additional ones at a small cost. We could also choose to glaze or not glaze our pots (additional cost for glazing). We enjoyed the day with lots of giggles and are now waiting for the pots to be fired, glazed and returned to us. I can safely say this has been one of my best Christmas presents ever, and I'm looking forward to trying out another of the workshops or individual sessions in the future.Hi Sandy, I'm so pleased that you and Vicki enjoyed yourselves creating away in what I feel it as my baby, my little slice of heaven where I can get creative and forget the world, my creative ceramics studio. You did such a wonderful job of your pots, both of your designs were so unique, both beautiful. :) Thank you so much for taking the time to write me such a wonderful review, it definitely put a smile on my face. I'm not ashamed to say that I have now got a huge smile on my face reading that it was one of your best Christmas presents ever! 😊 All the best, KatherineWritten August 25, 2021This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2021Written August 4, 2021
- Justin B2 contributions2 hour ceramics workshopMy son and I thoroughly enjoyed the course. Katherine is passionate and patient in her explanation and teaching of the skills. The time passed very quickly but we got lots of nice photos and Katherine also offered my son some great educational advice as he is a budding artist. Great fun.Hi Justin, Thank you so much for your kind words, I'm trilled you enjoyed your time on the workshop, you both did a wonderful job. It was really nice to see a father and son duo having a creative morning together, you were both bouncing ideas off each other which was lovely. My pleasure with the photos, its nice for you to have another way of remembering your experience. This was such a disappointing class, especially after the other positive reviews I have read. We were booked on a snowflake bowl morning class just before Christmas. It was a 2 hour class. The tutor spent some time sorting out coffees, then spent a full half hour telling us what we would be doing. Time was ticking on. There were 6 of us on the course i attended just before Christmas, unfortunately there were only enough tools for 3. The tutor told us we would have to wait to swap tools. With time pressing, and people working at different speeds, this was easier said than done. She spent a lot of time with one couple and the rest of us decided to get on on our own. I was told off for using two bits of A4 paper (instead of 1) and shouted at when I tried to apply the glaze, as I was apparently ‘doing it wrong’. Maybe if she had spent some time with us this wouldn’t have happened. My friend asked for advice at one point and was told ‘do what you want’.
It was clearly not a long enough time to complete the task, as exactly 2 hours since our arrival we were told we had ‘30 seconds to finish’. It felt like the Generation Game, we were told to leave our bowls where they were and she would sort them out.
She told us we could collect them when they were ready, which my friend did.
It was meant to be a relaxing creative event. It wasn’t.
I have done many many craft courses over the years. This was by far and away the worst.

Thank you for voicing your concerns, I am very sorry your experience wasn’t as you expected.
I always spread my attention equally throughout the group and if required I provide extra help to those more in need than others. I am sorry you felt you needed more one to one attention, in the future please do let me know if you need extra support. As with many studios tool sharing is common, within my workshops I always lay out a wide array of equipment to use and I always provide extra additional tools throughout the workshop if required.
I encourage creative freedom/personal direction throughout all of my workshops, to ensure you come away with a unique item every time. To get the creative juices flowing, I also provide a vast array of design options to inspire the class. Taking into account previous feedback, I ensure the class has regular reminders to encourage efficient time management, allowing your pieces to be created within the workshop timescale.
I will take on board your feedback and hope to see you in the near future.
As a gesture of goodwill, please contact me for 15% off, of a bespoke one-to-one workshop.
Kindest Regards,
Katherine

I think the demonstration should be outside your time for workshop. We ran out of time and was charged £12.50 for extra 15 minutes. Also, colours limited unless you pay more. Glazing also extra cost. You also have to provide your own bubble wrap when it’s ready for collection. There was pressure to pay more and increase your time. Take your own drinks as we didn’t and wasn’t offered one.

Hi Jennifer,
Thank you for voicing your concerns, I am very sorry your experience wasn’t as you expected.
I provide a variety of colours which are included in your workshop session cost, along with a wide array of tools and techniques for you to choose from. I do have the optional extra of additional colours and glazing should you wish to go for them, I do email this to you prior to your session. As emphasised throughout my workshop any extras are completely optional as pieces look lovely in their bisque form and in the included colour selection, it is all on personal preference of what you imagine for your created pieces.
With the ongoing global pandemic of COVID19 I must adhere to the current guidelines and as a shielded person I must do my best to keep myself and my family, and my customers and their families safe. I am currently not providing drinks in order to keep everyone safe; I do let my customers know this in advance of attending.
Taking into account feedback about time, I ensure throughout the class regular reminders to encourage efficient time management, allowing your pieces to be created within the workshop timescale. You can decide to extend for longer should you choose if your pieces are not complete.
I will take on board your feedback and hope to see you in the near future. As a gesture of goodwill, please contact me for 15% off, of a bespoke one-to-one workshop.
Kindest Regards, Katherine

My partner and I had a private bespoke workshop with Katherine at her lovely studio.
We have never done ceramics before so we had no idea what to expect, but Katherine is such a professional, she put at ease straight away.
Not only is Katherine an incredibly talented Ceramicist (as you can see on her website and IG/FB pages), she is also a great teacher and was very patient with us whilst we were learning the basics.
She allowed our imagination to run wild and encouraged us to create whatever we wanted, whilst guiding us every step of the way.
We both created something really unique and special to us and thoroughly enjoyed our Ceramics experience.
I would highly recommend Katherine for a Ceramics workshop. You won't regret it!

This experience was a 60th birthday present from my son, and my daughter and I travelled up from Hampshire to attend. What a fab present. Katherine made us both very welcome, showed us how to create a bowl and then supported us both with our individual creations. She really brought out our inner imaginations!! Can't wait to see the fired result.

I'm so pleased that you and Rachel enjoyed your workshop, you were a pleasure to teach. I loved that both of your designs were so unique to each other and that so many different techniques come into play in both your sea themed bowl, and Rachel's sunflower.
I'll keep you posted on the bisque and glaze firings!

My husband booked one of Katherine's pottery workshops as a surprise for my birthday. We had such a lovely time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Katherine was patient, friendly and helped us get the creative juices flowing. We felt very safe with the Covid guidelines but were still able to do everything we wanted to. The time absolutely flew by and I would definitely go back again! Very much looking forwards to using our finished bowls and would highly recommend booking this, whether you are a beginner or ceramics enthusiast!

I purchased a 2 hour workshop experience via Buyagift for my mum and daughter for Christmas last year. Katherine allowed me to pay extra so that I could join in also.
You follow a fairy light pathway to Katherine's studio, once inside the time just disappears. Katherine is kind, patient and calm, you totally lose yourself for 2 hours. We all made something different, using various stamps and tools.
I cannot rate this experience highly enough, for anyone who just needs a little me time, please visit Katherine and complete one of her workshops, you will not be disappointed. Plus you have something to keep to remember your day. Win, win.
