It’s a remarkable sight, with the standout feature of tremendous stone craft and work throughout. On approaching the great belfry came into view rising over the neighbouring buildings.

Its longevity is impressive. First mention extends back to the mists of the early 1000s. It has been subjected to numerous renovations and extensions in the subsequent millennium.

Inside is gorgeous. Dramatic in stone there is a grand vaulted ceiling which has a sequence of stained glass apertures slanting towards the apex.

A grand feature is the number of more modern holy art works by Begona Ramos, who was born in 1961.

A prone figure in Jesus enscased in a glass casket is striking. A grand altar has wonderful carved vignettes at its front.

This town was much cameras than Madrid or Paris. My wife and I were looking for quiet after 55 days in Spain and headed to Paris from Madrid by train. It was also a nice stopping point because it broke a very long train ride in two, avoiding changing trains.

The Salvadore Dali museum was nice!

The cathedral is also nice.

Some church elements date back to the X-XI centuries. The architectural ensemble of the Church of St. Peter truly embodied the Catalan Gothic. In the middle of the XIV century, it was decided to build a new Gothic cathedral on the orders of Peter IV. A century later, the first organ appeared in it, and construction was completed only by the middle of the 15th century. Over time, Figueres grew, he began to require a large cathedral. But until the end of the XVIII century, this issue was not resolved. The reconstruction of the church began only in 1744.

This church in Figueres was where Salvador Dali was baptised and probably worth visiting especially if following a trail of Salvador Dali's life.

The church has been around since the 10th century. Probably originally built in Romanesque, it's now in a mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Neoclassical. Inside, it's a fairly simple church, with a very simple alter of plain unadorned wall and only a statue of Jesus set into the recess of the back wall of the alter. The octagonal rool just above the alter is also very pretty as are the three rose windows.

Worthwhile seeing if in Figueres.

Beautiful gothic cathedral just on the same square of the Dalì museum. Spanish gothic is at max level: extremely large spaces, dark lights etc
Entrance is free. Visiting is absolutely worth while waiting in queue yo enter Dalì museum

The church of San Pere is an old church, founded in the ninth century.
It is open to all, a few people sat in the pews and prayed, others walked around to observe the stained glass windows and other ornaments

This is one that is easy to find being next to the Salvador Dali museum. It had interesting paintings including a panoramic version of the Holylands, and several good carvings. It is not a new structure dating back for a thousand years but has been added to and modified over the years. Don’t be fooled. By its plain entrance you will be surprised by t he inside.
