It is like a museum. You can see all kind of crafts originally from the Canary Islands. They are beautiful yet old. They do not do any special despite their samples and exhibitions are the same over and over. The prices are outrageous. I hope the artisans received good profit from the sales. The location and building are worthy to visit and to admired the beauty of the Canary architecture.

I was back in La Orotava after a long time and wanted to see the Casa de Balcones and was really disappointed.
1. A few years ago you could look at the house (courtyard) for free. The museum was located "only" on the 2. Floor. At that time I already found admission to this excessively expensive.
2. The souvenir/jewellery/merchandise area has also become frighteningly small.

Casa de Los Balcones is a fairly modest experience which doesn't quite deliver on the considerable hype and promotion that surrounds this attraction.

Access is limited to one floor and you only get to walk around a small part of the first balcony. Obviously aware that they need to justify the entrance fee, they have tried hard to add further interest but after you have seen what they are going to let you see of the building itself, everything else feels token and a bit of an afterthought.

Included in the entrance fee is an audioguide (which you can download) but it is delivered in a strangulated english accent which makes it quite hard to listen to for very long without wincing.

On the plus side, there is a free car park opposite which is much appreciated in a town with few parking spaces. Though the gift shop is mostly full of tourist tat, the highlight for us was the collection of Canarian embroidery which Casa de Los Balcones is clearly making considerable efforts to preserve and make available to those that can appreciate the craftmanship and distinguish from the Chinese garbage that most tourists buy thinking it's Canarian. The memory of this beautiful work will live with me long after I have forgotten the museum proper.

It’s a great house to visit, but in today’s world it’s not appropriate to have birds locked up in tiny cages barely 20cm square as part of the display.

This cruelty will anger a LOT of international visitors and it just isn’t necessary. The animal welfare standards may be extremely poor in The Canaries but most of the visitors to this museum will - I imagine - not be local and many - like us - will not like to realise we have supported cruelty.

If the museum contacts us I will happily pay the price for some fake birds, if the real birds are released, as they should be. If this is refused, I will consider contributing to a bigger cage.

Some may wish to avoid this museum until this is addressed.

An old house with beautiful balconies in the front of the building which became a tourist attraction mainly because of the great variety of typical Canarian products that they offer.
It is recommended to visit the museum on the top floor which is accessed by a spiral stairway. It shows the life of the family in the past, with furniture and objects from the past. Entrance to the museum costs 2 Euros.

If you want to learn more about traditional life in a house like this, you should visit this place. Not a very big museum, but we liked it.

Fun, little museum with a surprisingly extensive audio recording that offers history on the Canary Islands. The museum itself is teeny tiny but if you listen to 1-8 on the audio guide, you’ll learn a lot about the area. The tour itself is four euros without the audio guide, five with it. Definitely get the audio guide - the museum isn’t worth it without it! I had to dock a star for the creepy mannequin people - why oh why do people think a tacky, large mannequin adds any value?!?!?

Dear Katherine, Thank you so much for your review, so happy to read you truly enjoyed La Casa de los Balcones, and yes... Instead of being a tiny museum, it is charming. We are glad that you enjoyed your visit while listening to the audio guide. Thanks for sharing your opinion about the mannequin. We'll think about it. Best regards, The marketing manager

Teneriffe buildning culture in its unique best way.
An old house with balcones and history to tell of the years gone buy.
We walked from Santa Ursula here and I am glad we did.
Much to see and read about the history here.
Enjoy!

A boutique museum if you will. Nicely preserved/styled rooms of a traditional merchant house. The house itself is exquisite. I would recommend you spring the extra €1 for the audio tour - we didn't and definitely suffered as there are no information points around the rooms, just audio guides that we did not have 😕 their Canarian lace centre is exquisite and the ladies who make the pieces are truly artisans. Worth a look to appreciate the heritage and the beauty. And maybe some interior inspiration! Very pretty

La Orotava is very accessible from Puerta or Santa Cruse by bus or by car. La Orotava is a hidden gem of a town that has wonderful churches, Victoria Garden and the enchanting city center. You are better off parking your car and walking through the narrow streets , the peaceful Plaza de la constitution and the old, but perfectly restored Town hall. It is slightly hilly , but to most people it will be OK.
