Walked the Rio Chillar from Nerja today, it takes just over an hour to reach the scenic part of the walk and a further two hours to reach the waterfall. The walk is mostly in the river walking through stunning gorges,. Suitable footwear is a must, old trainers, enclosed sandles or water shoes. A walking pole is also a good idea.

Went here on our last visit and it went totally wrong. This time we went with a little more preparation and we had an amazing walk up to the top of the river.

Some advice that our experiences have taught us

• WEAR DECENT FOOTWEAR!!! Nothing expensive as they will be ruined by the end of it. I recommend comfortable airy trainers. Make this your priority!

- 1ST TIME - Looked at some other reviews and based on those we used water plimsoles, our feet were in agony and trying to negotiate back down the river was a horrendous experience.
- THIS TIME - Wore an old pair of running trainers with ankle socks that i was ok to bin at the end. Your feet will probably ache a little by the end but nothing compared to wearing unsupportive footwear.

• TAKE PLENTY OF WATER

- 1ST TIME - Took about 2 litres for two of us. This was not enough. We ran out very early on and we became quite dehydrated.
- THIS TIME - Took double the amount and this just saw us through the walk.

• GO AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.

- 1ST TIME - Started at 11am so by the time we got half way up it was scorching heat and the sun was directly above us which meant that it was hard to get out of the heat.
- THIS TIME - We went out at 7am and it was much cooler and much more manageable.

• WEAR COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF SUNCREAM AND PUT ON PRIOR TO GOING.

- 1ST TIME - Took suncream with us but had not put much on prior to going. As it was hard to dry off and being covered in tiny little stones most of the time it was like putting cream on at the beach. Its fair to say that I came back medium to well done.
- THIS TIME - A few decent coats of cream on before we left in the morning and no real need to put any more on. Obviously took some for after being under the waterfall. No burn.

• YOUNG CHILDREN or ELDERLY PERSONS, If they fall short on long walks then would not recommend that they go if you intend to go to the top.

- 1ST TIME - We took young children with us and they were knackered about half way up, we carried them for a while but we got tired so turned around and went back. They did not enjoy the experience.
- THIS TIME - No children, had a much better experience.

• DOGS

- BOTH TIMES - We saw people walking their dogs up the river, some of them having to drag/encourage them up. I have dogs myself and would never take them up the river as their paws would be completely ripped apart. I saw some people carrying their dogs back down the river as I imagine they refused to carry on.

• CAR PARKING
- 1ST TIME - Parked as close to the gate as possible. Got a €100 ticket
- THIS TIME - Parked at the top of the hill just before you go down the river entrance prior to the motorway bridge. Loads of space and not much further to walk.

If you take this advice on board that unless you break an ankle from being a bit too eager, you will have a great time.

Please be aware this walk is currently closed with strict restrictions in place.

Nerja Turismo says “COVID-19
The excursion along the Nerja river (Chillar) and bathing in its pools are totally prohibited”.

The park is CLOSED due to Covid restrictions. Don’t bother visiting as you will waste hours of your precious holiday as we did!! Great shame I’d it looked a great natural attraction.

Beautiful nature, perfect adventure off season in a little bit cold wather. A good 3 hours walk total from the start and back.
Clear green blue wather & a walk on big round rocks , have good steady shoes!

It’s not very spectacular at the beginning but get up stream a kilometre or so and the scenery changes. If you’re lucky you’ll see deer grazing on the sides of an old quarry. Can get a bit wet under foot so wear stout boots.

You walk up this narrow passage in the river as there is no shore on part of this river walk. A must do while in Nerja or in nearby Frigliana.
