We have completed a fantastic 2 week holiday in Nerja. We stayed in a fabulous 4 bed villa on Punta Lara. Fantastic views and everything brand new as villa is new to rental market. Everything is on hand. Private pool with sunbeds to get away from it all. Local bus stop to center of Nerja a short walk down the hill. A few restuarants are within walking distance and access to the beach. Car hire is recommended but you could manage with taxis and bus.

Punta Lara is a delightful urbanisation a short bus or taxi ride way from the centre of Nerja and the Balcon de Europe. The bus runs every hour and costs a euro - perfect, although we never did work out how to catch it back, especially after a few sangrias! There is a little cove, which you can walk to, but this is a major disappointment. It is best to travel into Burriana Beach - sunbeds 5 euros for the day and you can eat and drink your own picnic or use the waiter service. Great value, but you do need to get there by 10am on the first day to secure a bed. On subsequent days, to make things a little less stressful, you can reserve them the day before.
So, our holiday was ticking along nicely when we decided to eat within the urbanisation for our last night. There are a couple of bars; we chose the Tropicana, lured there by the offer of live music and daily specials - OMG! Do not waste your time!
The Tropicana is quite simply the very WORST restaurant that myself and my party have ever been to. Despite the awful singing and the ridiculously bad impression of Robbie Williams forced on you by non other than the owner, as a party of 8, and after being seated for over two hours before our starters arrived, we were kind of committed! Things continued to decline with the food taking so long, my husband decided to take our toddler home. I spoke to the owner and asked where on earth our food was, to be told that because they 'were quite busy, we had to wait longer'. I suggested that surely they should be able to cater for the tables that they have. The owner was very dismissive and promised that our food wouldn't be much longer. Eventually, our mains came out; minus one. The owner then had the audacity to ask what my Mum had actually ordered, and when she replied, fish, he said 'Ah, yes, that's what has taken the time - it is still frozen. Would you like some cajun chicken instead?'
We ended up sharing our meals with her in order to make a quick escape, however, two prawns in and my brother questions whether they were cooked. He picks through them to find some still frozen! Firstly, you could literally rollypolly to the sea from the restaurant and secondly, my brother didn't fancy a dose of food poisoning as a dessert. Anyway, after the owner's omission of guilt of 'Look, let's put it down to a bad day at the office' you'd have thought that he would have bent over backwards to appease us and obviously avoid this scathing review, however he looked totally bewildered when I said that we would absolutely not be paying full price. He then totals up the drinks and the starters and upon questioning from me, states 'Look love - don't waste my time'. As you can imagine this is not the response you would want! Anyway, please avoid this stuck in a time warp restaurant, where the singing is terrible, the food even worse, the owner thinks that the way to win over customers is to abuse their ears with his 'impression' of Robbie Williams and where he doesn't even wash his hands after leaving the toilet - yes, thought I'd save that one till last. Enjoy Punta Lara!

We rented a villa in Punta Lara, a resedential area just outside of Nerja. Mostly privately owned houses/villas. You need a car as the walk ito town can be a long one. Nearby are two beachside restaurants and a very good restaurant called First (see my review on this restaurant). We liked it very much because of its wonderful views (sea and mountains) and nearby beautiful town of Nerja.

punta lara is a quiet suburb of nerja, itself a pretty and family friendly spanish tourist town. however, the property we rented, 49 punta lara proved a huge disappointment. it was very poorly maintained, and stank of sewerage. there was a constant water leak in the property, meaning the master ensuite bathroom had to be shut off unused as it smelt so bad. nearly all the window shutters were broken, the furniture was cheap and nasty. cigarette butts and beer bottles littered the flower beds. the roof terrace had a sign "danger no entry", not much use to the average small child - it was not gated off. Overall a disgrace, and the owner gave no apology when we complained.

Punta Lara is a lovely, very quiet, well maintained urbanisation about 2km outside Nerja. It has a lovely medium sized pool area with good lifeguard supervision, and 3 small bar/ restaurants. When we booked we were told Punta Lara was about a 20 min stroll into the town, but this really doesn't describe it. The urbanisation is built into the side of a very steep mountain known locally as heart attack hill, and from our villa it was about 10 mins to the main road. After that you had the choice of walking down the main coast road or along a dirt track which was beside the beach. Each walk was a good 30-35 minute solid walk. A bus goes into the town from the hotel across the road, but is not very reliable. There are lots of taxis in the town which cost 7euro to Punta Lara. Walking home up the hill was an absolute killer.
There is a (very) mini market in the urbanisation but it is extremely basic and extremely expensive so you need to go to a supermarket in the town. Basically it is essential to hire a car if you plan to stay in Punta Lara.
Nerja itself is a beautiful town. There are loads of excellent places to eat. I especially recommend the beachfront restaurants just outside the town. They look really rough and ready but the seafood they serve is amazing.
All in all I would recommend Punta Lara for older couples. We had our teenage children with us and besides the pool there wasn't much for them to do.

We have visited Spain a number of times and Nerja 3 times. This is by far the worst place we have stayed. It looks really run down. Maybe we are just used to staying in smarter places. The villa we stayed in was stark and modern and not at all traditional Spanish which was a great shame - and they had the gall to charge us extra to heat the swimming pool which would otherwise have been unusable!

This place is a long way out of town in the middle of nowhere on a busy road and the nearby beach has very limited facilities As several people have pointed out you need a car to get around otherwise you are stranded.

The sun also disappears late afternoon as the mountains block it out. There is very little to entertain children and teenagers here.

We would definitely recommend Nerja but not this place

I have been going to the Oasis Restaurant at Punta Lara for many years. It's family run and they are so friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Toni the owner/chef is a great cook and she's always smiling. Everything is cooked to order and if you want something off menue, just let her know and she will go to the supermarket so it will always be available for your next visit. Toni is also very aware to food allergies and has several options available in terms of milk/nuts.
Added bonus' are TV sports (if you're so inclined), and free wifi. Toni's husband Manolo does not work in the restaurant but keeps a close watching brief and compliments everything Toni does, he's also a fab chef and creates some interesting dishes
If you come to Punta Lara, please visit the Oasis Restaurant, you won't be disappointed.

This is a village (urbanisation) we have been visiting for the last 30 years. It still manages to keep it's uniquenes as it was built well before the exploitation of the costas. It is built into the side of a hill and still retains the charm of an Andalucian white village. The main town of Nerja is a good 25/30 min walk away which can be along a good pavement, or which is preferable along the beach, which takes you past several real 'merenderos' where fish etc is available at a reasonable cost. Visit Breine and meet Antonio for the superb Paella. Bars in Punta Lara vary. The Punta Lara Bar, which used to be the traditional late bar, offers a wellcome late drink, a happy hour and great food. It has been modernised recently, and Bev and Jacky offer you a great wellcome whether you just want food, drink or want to watch the current sport fixture on the wide screen Television. The menu will not dissapoint!

The Oasis bar near the fantastic swimming pool is free to residents and holiday makers, is a bit hit and miss. The two sisters, or is it mum and daughter? are either OK or way below par. Depends on alchohol consumption! The other seasonal pool bar is Miguels, run by Mama Papa and son. Food is basic, and sometimes a long wait before you get served, but the booze is cheap.

However I would reccomend a holiday here !

Drove by here. It's really not very interesting. So, why is everyone writing about it?

Some write about a place, some about a place to stay, some about food. Get real. This is really a development that's all.

My wife and I stayed in a Villa right at the top of the hill in Punta Lara... Plaza Cadiz. The villa had wonderful views from the roof terrace towards the mountains sea and to Nerja. I wouldn't suggest that this would be a great place if you had difficulty with walking especially steps. It made no difference to us, we have come home a little fitter!!!. We used the communal pool with the Oasis Bar and snack bar. The food was very good at both for lunches or evening meals... Especially mums home cooking at the snack bar. We visited the Tropicana Bar only once , awful food albeit friendly staff its a weird place which needs the help of the hotel inspector for their interior design and Gordon Ramsey for their food. It is about a 30 minute walk to central Nerja , there is a regular bus service. To sum our visit up we had a lovely relaxing holiday in Punta Lara spending most of it by the pool in the hot sunshine.
