The church is amazingly beautiful inside. Really recommendable. A must if you visit the old city of Antequera.

A lady working at our Hotel lived in this fine city of many churches, so with limited time and wanting to climb up to the fort, we asked her which of so many churches we should visit. She said Carmen.

It is ornate with high vaulted ceilings and as we were there the organ began to play; that was special.

Your top priority has to be the fort area but we were happy next day to thank the lady because as she said this is a city proud of its churches and when you look down from the fort to the roves and spires below visiting first helps you get your bearings and appreciate the sheer grandeur of the Moorish and Christian legacy in Anteque.

After you have seen the “Collegiate Church” and the “Roman Terms or Baths” next to it, you can walk down the street and head to the “Nossa Senhora Del Carmen Church” when you are still in time, because this one is only open during the week from 11h00 / 13h30 and in the afternoon from 16h30 / 17h45, we were too late for the inside visit, so we contented us with a view of the outside. The entrance fee for this church is 2 € pro person. The church is built into the “Moorish Style” and dated from the 16th and 17th century and is one of the most important monuments of the city of Antequera.

The El Carmen Church is situated on top of a high hill and there views from the terrace beside the church are wonderful. The church itself has a spectacular retable. The exuberant Baroque main altar was made of red pine wood and designed by Antonio Primo de la Rosa in 1747. The sculptures were the work of Jose de Medina. The altar has 52 sculptures made of wood and polychromed. The cupola is decorated in the Mannerist style. The walls are also painted in the Mannerist style. The pulpit is very beautiful. There are many altars that are gilded.

Although hyped as a must see, we thought the church disappointing and not worth the €2 entry fee. Yes the altar is ornate but due to bad lighting not very visible. For ornate churches, the grand cathedrals of Málaga or Seville are far better options. For charming rustic churches, there are better options in many towns around such as the church in Istán. Carmen church falls short of either category.

Church from late 16th century - it is famous for its rich decorations in the interior. You will be amazed by the colours, sculptures and golden chapels. Well worth a visit.

One of the most beautiful churches I have ever visited. The carving is exquisite,
Murals, lighting... everything. Check the opening times and don’t miss it!

El Carmen Church sits on a hill above the town close to the castle & it's definitely worth finding as it's a really beautiful space. As you enter, it's such a surprise to see so much detail, & every inch of this building seems to have been painstakingly restored to a superb standard. The main alter is amazing as the very intricate hand carved wood is superb & stands from floor to ceiling, reaching all the way up to the highly decorated dome. Arches at the entrance to the side altars & the walls are also full of colour & interesting detail. The building itself standing high above the town, has fantastic panoramic views across huge distances. A must do when visiting this lovely old & beautifully kept town of Antequera & surrounding areas.

The first two times we tried to see inside there was a wedding and the next we missed the closing time at 13:30 before 16:30 and after 17:45.

But as they say - the third time is a charm.

Inside was beautiful ( several pictures attached including of the main altar wall made of wood from South America I think).
