Visited the town for a few hours. Apparently
the oldest town in Slovenia and situated next to the River Drava. We saw the Town Tower, Orpheus Monument etc, before walking up to the castle. There is a ticket office and near that is a pedestrian gate into grounds directly next tothe castle. All of the grounds are free and you just need to pay to enter the actual building (except the toilet for which thete is a separate door) very picturesque and pleasant town. Had we had more time we may have gone in, but it contains such exhibits as a collection of instruments and we had only seen some the day before in the Museum in Maribor. A town in which we would have liked to spend more time

Visited the castle and most of the rooms are decorated with paintings. Some were very bad and/or the painted people were very ugly. We had a lot of fun discussing the looks of the nobility who once lived in the castle. Was a nice visit. Castle had some very nice views

If you’re really into the medieval period, look elsewhere. There are extensive exhibits here, very interesting, but much more focused on families living here in 1800s. And Ptuj didn’t have much to offer beyond this castle.

The castle is one of the most beautiful preserved in Slovenia. They have wonderful collections. Not just the equipment of the castle and the display of life on the castle, including a collection of musical instruments, weapons and, of course, a hall with kurents. Leadership is also on a high level. The souvenir shop also offers beautifully selected items related to the history of the castle and the city of Ptuj, no kitsch and other cranes.

Lots of local history with a charming guide who gave us personal attention, guiding us the various rooms and exhibits. Good range of things to see including paintings, musical instruments and armaments. All well laid out and presented with explanations in English. Little bar outside, though it was raining on our visit.

We had a guided visit of the castle with Renata, whose English was great. The castle is very interesting and there are great views of Ptuj. There is also a little cafe there, toilets and a gift shop

A climb up the hill on tricky cobbles so do wear sensible shoes. The views are spectacular so worth the climb. Maximum €6 to get in, although you can just go and sit in the courtyard and have a coffee or beer. It is set over 3 floors and there is plenty to see, beautiful furniture and paintings, musical instruments and the history of the castle. The wall painting of scenes of China are fascinating. Well worth a visit.

We had a memorable time at Ptuj castle and would definitely recommend a visit! My review though differs somewhat from the other reviews found here.
First of all, while there is indeed a long and steep staircase leading from the town to the castle high on the hill, there is absolutely no need for visitors to climb all those stairs. You can simply drive through town and up the back side of the hill, almost all the way to the top of the castle. There is a large, free parking lot there!!! (I mean, unless you want to park in town and go up the stairs, then by all means...)
Also, while it's free to walk around the outside of the castle and the courtyard, there is a 6 euro fee per adult to see the museums or a 12 euro group charge for the whole family. You pay in the office as you arrive and a friendly employee will unlock the different exhibitions for you, as you make your way through the different wings and one annex of the building. Having seen bigger and admittedly more spectacular castles, we were underwhelmed by the paintings and furniture, or the rooms of the castle. The history of the family that owned the castle is interesting enough. If you are a music buff, you might be intrigued by the collection of musical instruments.
What really made our visit worthwhile was the collection of carnival costumes, or Kurents. I believe these are unique to Slovenia and they were fascinating, along with the video of people dancing at the annual festival. You can even dress up in one of the costumes for pictures--naturally I did. It's incredibly hot and heavy! We also really enjoyed the weapon's collection. In front of the weapon's collection, the staff has placed a large sword replica for visitors to lift and pose with, which was another huge hit with our family.
The castle is small and charming and you have the most beautiful views of the countryside for miles around.
