1000 years of history , well kept gothic architecture, John Huniady , his son Laszlo, queen Izabela Jaggielo and her son the future king John Sigismun , Gabriel Bathory and a lot of ilustrious personalities are buried in this cathedral starting with the 1300's. It is located in the center of the citadel , no entrance fee , the tower might be visited for 10 lei (2 euro) . Might need a guide or to check online facts about the long history of this place .History lovers will enjoy it . Probably the visit time is around 1 hour , visited 22 sept 2021

As usual in Romania, the Catholic Cathedral are very well maintained. Maybe the authorities should consider adding notes in Romanian languages... we are still in Romania.
Regardless its presence, I would say that a catholic cathedral will never be as warn as an orthodox cathedral.

The St. Michael Cathedral in Alba Iulia is the oldest church in Romania.
King Stephen I or Saint Stephen first established started building the cathedral in Alba Iulia around the year 1000 that got finished about a century later - than it was destroyed by the Mongol invaders around 1240 - rebuilt on the original foundation and eventually getting its current shape during the reign of John of Hunedoara towards the mid 1400's.
John of Hunedoara is also berried in the Cathedral together with family members, but also other prominent figures of Transylvanian history are to be found here.
Nowadays it is part of the historical buildings and of the heritage of Romania.
For those of you who are into architecture - you will find Gothic features and the early Romanesque style mixed here
Overall very interesting - for about 1 euro you can climb in the church tower - it was hot and crowded so we skipped this experience this time - maybe next time we'll be a bit better.
So when you are in the area check it out ... it might just worth it.

It's a nice church located in the citadel area. You can admire it's architecture both outside and inside. It's important for the Hungarian community as many important rulers of Transylvania are buried there. Hunyadi Janos is one of them. Worth stopping by.

The Roman Catholic Cathedral n Alba Iulia is, in my opinion, the most beautiful Roman-Catholic cathedral in Transylvania. It's also among the most important monuments of medieval architecture in the area. It was built mainly between 1200-1300, then along the time there have been made certain additions/changes. Inside the cathedral there is the tomb of an important Transylvanian ruler (who lived around 1400) known as Iancu de Hunedoara.
Now, what I found impressing at this cathedral was its hugeness. It is very imposing, gothic style mixed with late romanic style. It can make anyone feel so antlike faced to the gianteque monument. It expresses power, authority and pride.
There is such an amazing contrast between this cathedral and the orthodox one in its right.

The Roman Catholic cathedral is the oldest building in the fortress. The edifice is representative of Romanic monuments in Romania and brings together the four major styles of the medieval and premodern age: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. Once you enter this church you feel safe and once you hear the music you feel blessed. We went there at a wedding and it was impressive.

We have visited it on January 1st in the morning, during a beautiful concert by the organ (still not crowded).
Simple, clean, serene and well-preserved.
One of the oldest standing buildings in Romania and a silent witness to many past events.
A gem in plain sight.
