At the cliff end of the big plaza found in front of the church of Nazare. It is free to enter and has two levels. Covered in very old Azulejos. Its a shrine to thank the Madonna for saving a life.

A very small chapel that is carved into a ledge but the history behind it is big! Apparently, the stone Madonna found down the stairs is said to have stone coming from around 2000 years ago and that the way the stone is crafted is not indigenous to Europe but rather the Middle East. This is the archaeology behind it. However, Catholics believe that the Madonna was carved by St. Joseph (Mary's husband) and then brought to Europe by rulers.

Great legend, with a humble chapel to pay dues to it. Easily found in the main square, well kept with beautiful tiles. Find the hoof print!

The small chapel is always opened, as far as could tell, and its free to visit.
It is beautifully decorated with blue and white tiles, typically portuguese, and although the exterior seems more austere it has also a few tiled details. It holds references to the legend of the “Sítio da Nazaré” ("Place of Nazaré”) , the story goes that a hunter was hunting near by during a foggy morning and followed a deer. By the cliff they were about to fall and the hunter pleaded to the Virgin Mary and so the paw of the horse creased on the rock preventing them to fall (but look for the hole story, it has much more to tell).
By seeing the place and thinking about the legend, it is really remarkable.
If you visit the place in the winter (as we did) be careful about the weather. The place is very very windy and the cliff is really high. All of this with the powerful sea ahead of you makes this place very dramatic and a place that you have to “live”, not just to see.
Too difficult to park the car because there’s always so many people around. It is also on the way to the lighthouse and right by the Santuary to the Holy Virgin of Nazaré, another two places not to miss.

Located at the south corner of "O Sitio" square , adjacent to the observation point/terrace , this 12th Cent. built tiny chapel is of great importance to the history and people of Nazare . Worth a visit .

Most people go to Sitio only for the panoramic view which, in fact, is magnificent. On the belvedere there is a very small chapel to remember the miracle of Our Lady. Inside, you must go downstairs to see the image of Our Lady in a kind of small grotto. Enjoy!

This small shrine is worth spending a few minutes to see when in Nazare. It doesn't cost any money, and is an interesting introduction to the miracle of the horseman and the deer. The tiles are appear to be very old.

We went here with a tour. We learned that a king's horse almost went off a cliff. The king prayed to the Virgin Mary to be saved and he was, so he built this Shrine to Mary. It's very small but picturesque.

You can easily miss this place as you make your way to see the view. It is on the left and small. It is well worth a visit to look inside from the outside.

Just beside the lookout point in Sítio across from the church this tiny chapel is very beautiful with its collection of tiles. Go downstairs to see the small Madonna. Free
