We chose not to go down to the beach of Nazare because of time restrictions. But could see the beautiful beach from afar. - ksez1New England73 contributionsStupendous ViewsThis has to be one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. The views are outstanding. It was March, so no massive waves, but there was plenty of surfers. The food trucks on the path to the lighthouse have some good food lunch options. Restrooms at at the top and cost 50cents to use. As others have mentioned, the walk to the lighthouse is long and steep, but be sure to have 3 euros per person to take a shuttle (tuk-tuk) back to the top.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 5, 2024
- HalkidisSouthwest Finland, Finland4,680 contributionsStunning viewsNazare is known for its massive waves and small museum with lighthouse is the best place to see those. It's walkable from O Sitio main square to there, but coming back upwards on hot day is a bit struggle...although there are kiosks and food trucks for refreshments. They also have tuk tuk's and other small shuttles, if you are too tired to walk. Otherwise O Sitio area offers great views towards Nazare City and long beautiful beach. So take a cable car or one of their cheap taxis and have a lunch in that old areaVisited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 25, 2024

We went on a day when the waves in Nazaré were over 7m, however the “site”, which is a large square for pedestrians, had mostly souvenir shops open, few restaurants open and at 12:30 they had no capacity to serve the guests. customers, waiting was more than an hour. They did not have enough staff to guarantee good service. The explanation was that the high wave season would be in December. Otherwise, the church is quite beautiful. There is great difficulty in parking the car. We went to the lighthouse and didn't know there was a fee (2 euros). Always take a coat, as it is very windy and you may not be able to go up and down the mountain without being warm.

Modest center with an ancient village that can be reached with a rack, whose construction has inflicted an unwatchable wound on the hill. Dominate ls beautiful beach lined with huge buildings ugly concrete cubes containing shops and bars hit and run! Orribile!

Surprise yourself after going up the funicular to this "Sitio" above the city beach. Quaint shop little chapels and locals in their traditional garb. go out to the point and look at the views on both sides of the point. come back have tapas and drinks above the beach town and enjoy the view

Very beautiful scenery from the top of the cliff. We were there on a chilly day so did not use the beach but it was still quite busy. We enjoyed the scenery, the live vibe, and the many photo opportunities. We had a car so drove up to the top of cliff rather than use the funicular, which I suspect can take a while to wait for during off season. Btw, it’s true about the ladies with traditional skirts - very cute indeed!

This was a great place to visit. Expect normal tourist trap crowds. A fun walk down and a bit of a tough walk back up. Absolutely worth it to see the biggest waves in the world!

Wow, the views are stunning from here. Park and walk around; take it all in. You can enjoy some food/drinks at one of the many cafes or just walk the cliffs and look down on the beach and waves. Be aware that there are steep cliffs and nothing stopping you from walking right off the edge.

Sitio is at the top of the cliff of Nazare and has a large piazza overlooking the main tourist beach and seaside village, known as Praia. You can also take the funicular that runs from Sitio to Praia (the villiage and beach below). There is a beautiful church on the piazza of Sitio and lots of places to eat or have a drink. From here, you can also walk down to the lighthouse which is on the point separating the tourist beach in the south, and the North Beach, called Praia Nord. This is where the professionals surf. We love this place and now have a home here. In all my travels in the past few years, I have yet to find a town so cute, traditional and interesting.

We're staying in a b&b not too far from this place so we decided to walk here to see the view. It's uphill (both ways) and you should wear good walking shoes. It's worth the trip because the views are amazing!
Once you reach the top there's a little square with shops and a church. We bought an adorable little hooded wool sweater for a one year old for only 15E. I found a magnetic closure (hard to find magnetic) three band bracelet for only 6E. Also very affordable kitchen towels for 4E.
Behind the shops is the breathtaking view. If you walk down the very step path & through the 'largest waves in the world' arch you reach the lighthouse. The cost to go in the lighthouse is 1E. We decided to stay outside & walk behind it. Warning it's steep and very windy. Make sure you have a jacket. We saw many very cold people at 1300 on a sunny clear day.
You can also drive down to the lighthouse, but the parking lot there only holds about 10 cars.
It's a hike, but the views are breathtaking & worth the effort.

if we go to Sito to see the view and the small church, how far is it to walik to the fort? Is it fort Sao Miugel? Are there signs to the fort?
We were considering parking near small chapel, if there is parking and walk to fort as you recommended in the review.
Thanks for your help

We did go up to Sito from the town of Nazare by the funicular. We toured the magnificent cathedral on the main square and walked around the small streets and along the belvedere for the spectacular views. We did not go to the fort so we cannot answer your questions about it. The town is small so I think you will be able to find it easily. We parked our car in Nazare which had ample metered parking available along the street. We recall seeing some parking lots as well. We cannot address the parking issue in Sito and only noticed cars parked along the streets.
The views of Nazare and the coast are spectacular and we really liked the little village. Enjoy your trip.

Hi , just wondering if the bus from Fatima stops near the top of the cliff or is the bus stop anywhere close by. We would like to spend the day sightseeing and maybe a few hrs on the beach
Written May 25, 2015
There is a bus service, search for schedules on "Rede Expresso", to the center of Nazaré, close to the market and near the beach. Within 10 minutes walk you use a local ralway, cable car that in less than five minutes takes you to the top. If you want within 10 minutes walk you can visit the place where McNamara surfed the 30 meter waves, and several restaurants and food. During summertime buses can be crowded.
