In the altar of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré, the Sacred image of Our Lady of Nazaré is kept, a Black Virgin, carved in wood, which was brought from Mérida to the Site of Nazaré, in the year 711 by Fray Romano. Inside the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré, we must highlight the Dutch tiles from the 18th century, which cover the main altar and represent biblical scenes, as well as the paintings in the sacristy, which describe the story of the miracle that saved his life. to Mr. Fuas Roupinho. Do not miss it.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 13, 2024

The interior is filled with golden decorations that cover the walls and ceilings, making it a spectacular sight. It is said to be popular with pilgrims as a place where miracles occurred, but when I visited, there were many tourists looking around the church.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 6, 2024
- Hank HVirginia665 contributionsHome of a Secret StatueThis church houses a statue of Mary breastfeeding baby Jesus. Tradition holds that it was carved by St Joseph and painted by St Luke. It later came into the possession of St Jerome, St Augustine, and an early Portuguese king, who hid it from being discovered by conquering Moors. Across the street from the church, see the cliff-side cave where it was safely hidden for centuries. Learn the cool story about how it was discovered. Then have lunch seaside and spend the afternoon relaxing on Nazare’s famous beach. Enough here to make a day of it.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 15, 2024

Historic church (founded in the 14th century) in the center of the town of Nazare. The inside is beautiful with gold gilding and tiles for decoration, you won’t want to miss it. The church contains a revered statue of the Madonna and Child Jesus, said to have come from Nazareth (hence the name of this town), and said to have been carved by St. Joseph himself. It is one of the oldest statues of the Madonna and Child and so alone, is well worth a visit to this beautiful church. Read up on-line about the miracle attributed to Our Lady and its association with this statue, it'll make your visit to this church all the more fascinating and meaningful.

Located at a strategic square , leading to the famous lighthouse "Fort de Sao Miguel Arcanjo" , a few restaurants , cafes and souvenir counters in the area . The church was founded in the 14th Cent. by King Ferdinand , but it took several centuries and renovations before it got its current nice two bell towers form .
The church may be humble on the outside but beautiful inside : a wooden painted ceiling and some beautiful Dutch tiles work .

The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Nazare is located in Sítio da Nazare, very close to the site of the apparition of the Virgin Mary. The church was built in the 14th century, then rebuilt several times and rebuilt in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The small statue of Nossa Senhora da Nazare is placed in an illuminated niche above the main altar. Decorating with azulejos tiles made in 1708 depict biblical scenes. A must see when you're visiting this area.

We were in the upper town on a Sunday so mass was occurring the first time we stopped by. When we returned, a christening was taking place. The church is pretty and not very large, so it doesn’t take more than a couple minutes to visit.

Outside is nice but inside is much nicer than it appears from outside. Definitely worth a visit, and an interesting back-story encapsulated in a drawing on the wall just inside the entrance.

Sheriff Dom Fuas Roupinho (and perhaps a Templar too), was chasing a deer up a hilltop in 1182, when the Madonna saved his life... .

Is the statue back yet? We visited this incredibly beautiful shrine church, and paid a fee to tour it on our own, into the sacristy which is tiled on every surface, and to walk up to the niche above the altar where the miraculous image of Nossa Senhora de Nazare is always on display "but it isn't there: it is being restored," we were informed. This was mid-late September 2023. We also went to Sunday Mass at the church. It was well-attended, and the choir was very good. (We don't speak or understand Portuguese, so cannot say what the homily was like) Also due to the language barrier, we were unable to find out anything else about the statue beyond "it is being restored."
I noted a World Youth Day sign outside the church, so surely some lucky young pilgrims got to come to this venerable place! While we were in Nazare, a group of Polish pilgrims of the Christ the King Society were there, with large signs in various languages encouraging a return to the faith of Jesus Christ, a return to the Catholic faith.
We loved our 4-night stay in Sitio-Nazare and would love to return and stay longer.
(I may be able to add some photos later.)

What time are Masses on Saturday and Sunday?

Como se chega à imagem? Parece tão pequena no altar!
