Cable car connecting Nazaré Beach to the Old Town
The cable car connects Nazaré Beach and the old town on the cliff, and the ride takes less than 10 minutes. You pay the fare at the boarding gate and then board the car. The car departs when it is almost full. When it departs, the cityscape of Nazaré Beach spreads out before your eyes. You can also get a panoramic view of the majestic Atlantic Ocean. The departures are timed at the top and bottom of the cliff, so the ascending and descending passengers pass each other right in the middle of the cliff. It seems to be cheaper to buy a round-trip ticket.

    Short Trip Worth Taking…see why
First of all this “funicular” is officially named “Ascensor da Nazare”. Basically it’s a cable car transporting about 30 people at a time between the main town of Nazare with its beach to Praia Norte, the north beach area of Nazare where the big waves, magnificent cliff overlooks, and lighthouse (farol) are. The views are spectacular. Secondly, before you book a hotel and/or buy Ascensor tickets consider where you’ll mostly be and how often you want to visit the other part since the Ascensor isn’t free. As of June 2024 tickets were 4€ round trip for a single adult ticket - subject to change of course. Regardless of price, you’ll definitely want to do this trip at least once for the experience. I stayed in the main city and took this ride up for a full day of exploring the tiny town, enjoying the overlooks, walking down to the beach (a long steep hill but tuk tuk rides can be hired), checking out all the street vendors etc.

    Worth the while
Very fun ride up the mountain in this funicular that is 135 years young according to a sign when you reach the top. Worth it always to get a round trip ticket on a day with good visibility. With my teenage sons and I, it was the best of viewing days today

This really is on the list of items that you must do! We parked in Nazare (in the free parking lot) and walked to the Funicular. We purchased return tickets for €4 for adults and €3.50 for children. I’m not sure if more is charged in high season as I’ve seen reviews with lower prices, but the prices above is what we paid.

Please note that when we visited in Aug 2022 face masks were still mandatory! We forgot ours so went to the mini market across the way and picked them up for 50c each.

Most passengers can sit during the ride although there are some standing passengers. There are facilities for wheelchairs. There are boxes for dogs and cats.

The view is simply breathtaking!

You can spend the day in Sitio. Between shopping, eating and seeing the sites, it’s a nice outing.

Note that we saw the queue to go up to Sitio at around 18h30 was about 1 hour.

There are 3 ways to get from the lower part of the city to the upper part: by car (parking could be really difficult), on foot via the stairs or, to save your knees, on the "little train".

We took the train. Price per person €4 return if you buy the complete ticket.

Here too: only cash! That's why it's one star less...

The train leaves every 15 minutes. Completely uncomplicated. The view over Nazaré and the beach is amazing.

The view is beautiful, it's worth it. Short trip, but going up on foot is very tiring, the hill/street is very steep.
Tickets can be purchased only ascent, or only descent, or ascent and descent together, which is more affordable.
It doesn't take long to go up or down, and the intervals are quick too.
After I went up I walked to Fort São Miguel.
If you don't want to use this service, you can also drive up.

Fairly new, it takes you to Sitio (upper part of Nazare) in two minutes, costs 2.5 euros one way and 4 euros return. Waiting time between one ride and another of approximately 10 minutes. The alternative on foot is a long staircase that cuts through the mountain and will take you at least 25-30 minutes and a lot of effort if you are not fit.

Nazare Funicular is like any other Funicular. You only save a short hike, but the ride isn't too costly. If you've done a funicular ride before and don't mind hiking you could save your money. If you don't want to walk or haven't done a funicular ride before I would recommend it. The view at the top is as great regardless of how you get there.

Everything was fine until 5 people stood in front of us. This funicular can have 12 people standing up, I remember reading that right before people got in front of it. It's a short drive. On the way back if we could see the sea and sunset.
We pay 4€ each round trip

It is a funicular that takes you to the highest part of Nazare.

The round trip ticket costs four euros.
The schedules in summer and/or winter are different so you have to look carefully at when to go up or when to go down.

As a different attraction it is good to be able to use it. It is recommended.

Cable car still closed. You can take a taxi for 5€ to Sitio or just take the stairs (~ 10-15 min). Stair offers great views and great photo spot with a swing. Bit tiring though.

I am not sure whether it’s fair to say that this place is underrated purely because it’s not in a big city, but this is one of the best funiculars / cable cars around.

The views are simply spectacular and are on par with some of the most iconic teams / funiculars - such as the Peak Tram in Hong Kong.

Even if you are not staying in Nazere overnight, it would still be worth it to make sure you check this off your list on your day trip.

The best way to go from the beach to the beautiful top view. The Nazare Fenicular is an essential attraction when visiting the city and a very useful way as the slope is steep. There are three ways to get to the top of Nazare, a fenicular, a car and a path for the adventurous who want to do it on foot. The fenicular resembles a small railway car and the ride is really fun. The journey takes just over 2 minutes and the fenicular leaves every 10 minutes. Whoever goes to Nazare should not miss this opportunity.
