Amarante city center and Ponte de São Gonçalo Bridge are a picturesque, quiet and charming city/bridge with views straight out of a storybook.
We loved strolling down the quaint main street as a stop over for lunch, coffee and pasteries on our way to Porto from the Douro Valley. There were a variety of coffee shops and bakeries, some with scenic views. Don't forget to look for the "rocket ships" 🚀😆
Be mindful of cars on the bridge, use the side balconies for photo/selfie opportunities, to rest and people watch.
For a perfect view of Ponte de São Gonçalo Bridge, take a moment to walk down to the shoreline.
There is a small parking area near the church adjacent to the bridge.
Amarante is a quaint city with a walkable city center and a worthwhile stop over if you're in the vacinity.

The Sao Goncalo Bridge spans the Tamega River. The original bridge was built in the 13th century, but collapsed in a 1763 flood. The current granite structure was built in 1790. The bridge was the site of a battle between the Portuguese and the French forces during the 1809 Peninsula War. A plaque on the southeastern end of the bridge commemorates the battle. Just one of many sites in this attractive town.

from under... therefore I advice you to go down by the stairs, which are located behind the bazaar, to the bank of the river and make a great stroll along it ..

This bridge is beautiful. Walk the bridge and take photos of the town. There is a great pastry shop on the opposite side of the bridge.

Dating from 1790 this attractive bridge is an integral part of town life and is used by thousands of people daily getting from the main shopping areas on the “church” side of the river, and the main restaurant and bar roads on the other.
It’s an attractive structure and the views of the bridge with the church behind it are splendid.

Beautiful during the day and at night. You cross the bridge and find yourself in front of the gorgeous cathedral and the historic center. Not to be missed when in Amarante.

We walked around the town and over this bridge. Relevant history is on others' reviews, but I thought that the bridge and the rest of the village didn't offer much to the traveling tourists. The Cathedral is closed for renovations.

Dominican friar, Gonçalo, was instrumental in the construction of a stone bridge across the river. The current bridge and adjacent church now bear his name. He is alleged to have struck a rock with a stick, causing wine to flow from it for the construction workers building the bridge. He’s also said to have called out to the river, when the workers ran out of food, resulting in fish jumping onto the river bank to feed them. Whether these things happened or not, they resulted in Gonçalo being named a saint in 1561. His body is buried within the Church of Saint Gonçalo.
Gonçalo’s bridge collapsed in 1763, so the current bridge is an 18th century reconstruction (1790). It was instrumental in the defence of the town in 1809, when local heroes, led by General Silveirea, withstood an attack by Napolean’s troops, led by General Loison. They held off the French attack between 18th April and 2nd May. A bronze plaque commemorating this feat can be found attached to a pillar at the entrance to the bridge. The narrow, granite bridge is still open to vehicular traffic – but only in a single direction.

We had a wonderful 4 days in Amarante staying at the Casa da Calcada Relais & Chateau. We had a magnificent view of the bridge and church opposite from our hotel window. The bridge is beautifully floodlit at night and pleasant to stroll across during the day despite the traffic. The town is not at all touristy and has a most relaxing atmosphere. We're only keen to go there again.

We drove from Peso da Regua to Porto, so we decided to make a stop. Amarante is such a lovely, charming place, there is a bridge you can take a stroll, small alleys with shops and cafes. You can easily park your car in the city.
Amarante shopping streets aren't car free zone, although I think it would be even greener and more picturesquare if there isn't too crowded with cars. Nevertheless, I had a good time here.

Kindly recommend a place to park to see Amarante Bridge and church.

There is parking right next to the bridge and church. Go over the bridge, turn right and park in front of the museum, behind the church.
